St. Clare Medical Center & Clinics

Crawfordsville’s St. Clare Medical Center offers inpatient and outpatient services. Founded in 1902, St. Clare opened a new acute-care facility in 1984, with 120 beds, 80 physicians, 450 employees and 70 volunteers. Specialized services include cardio-pulmonary care; surgery, including laparoscopic and orthopedic procedures; oncology; radiology; and emergency care. Also on hand are dietitians, sports medicine specialists, therapy services and women’s services. In addition, there’s a multi-specialty clinic with a focus on neurology, pulmonology and urology. Home care and home medical equipment services are also available.

In 2006, St. Clare Maternity Care Center was ren-ovated to offer five-star accommodations and state-of-the-art technology. Now, each step of childbirth takes place in the same suite, providing additional levels of care and privacy. The Maternity Care Center consists of six labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum suites. With the renovation, an additional six rooms were added for patient overflow. In addition, the renovations added new physician/midwife sleeping rooms, a nursery, a Caesarean section suite and an education room.

Another inpatient service offered by St. Clare is the Extended Care unit, which offers skilled nursing services to patients who do not require acute hospital services, but who need professional medical care to further the healing process prior to returning home.

The Generation Mental Health program offers inpatient mental health care for cognitive and clinical disorders found in senior adults. Other inpatient care includes Intensive Care Services and the Medical/Surgical Care unit. The ICU consists of five hospital rooms with patient care monitored by a skilled nursing staff. The Surgical Care unit pro-vides care for acute and chronic illnesses for patients of all ages.

Outreach services are provided through St. Clare HomeCare, the St. Clare Neighborhood Clinic and St. Claire Sports Medicine. St. Clare HomeCare consists of skilled nurses, home-care aides, medical social workers, and speech and occupational therapists, all trained to provide medical services under the supervision of the patient’s physician.

Opened in 2000, the St. Clare Neighborhood Clinic provides medical care to low-income families at a frac-tion of the cost of traditional medical clinics. The Neighborhood Clinic is located in Crawfordsville and serves all residents of Montgomery County who meet the low-income guidelines. The clinic is nurse-managed, with physician and other health care professional collaboration. Primary care and non-emergency services are provided, such as routine adult and child physical exams, basic lab work, referrals to social services and counseling, and treatments of chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.

The Family Fun and Health Day offers free health screenings and health information. Booths feature doctors, health care professionals and community not-for-profit organizations. Free food, games and door prizes are part of this annual family event held in June. Health fair events include blood pressure checks and cholesterol screenings. Athens Medical Group

The Athens Medical Group (AMG) offers a wide range of services for the community, including women’s health, pediatrics, diagnostics, surgery and physical therapy. Formed in 1999 in partnership with St. Vincent’s Hospitals and Health Systems, the group includes 16 local, board-certified physicians who have been providing professional care to Montgomery County for more than 150 combined years.

The AMG physician office locations include Greenacres Medical Group and Williams Family Medicine, both of which offer complete family care; Crawfordsville Family Care, offering family care and women’s health services; Athens Medical Specialists, offering internal medicine, general surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology; Athens ENT, an ear, nose and throat practice that also offers surgical and sleep dis-order services; Athens Ben Hur Surgical; and Athens Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. The ancillary locations are the Athens Diagnostic and Surgical Center, the Athens Sports Therapy and Rehab, and the Athens Sleep Center.

The Athens Diagnostic and Surgical Center opened in February 2001 and is dedicated solely to the outpatient surgery and radiology needs of Montgomery County. The center is divided into four parts: Outpatient Surgery, Imaging Studies, Williams Family Medicine and the Athens Visiting Specialists Clinic. The surgical side has two out-patient surgical suites with eight private pre-op areas and is able to handle many different outpatient surgeries and endoscopic procedures. The diagnostic area offers patients private care and comfort while having an open MRI, mammogram, ultrasound, CT scan, bone densi-tometry, or general X-ray. The latest diagnostic testing includes cardiac stress testing and echocardiography.

Assisted Living/Senior Care

Even as the community becomes more and more high-tech, agriculture still plays an important role in Montgomery

County’s economy. Harvested crops include corn, wheat, oats and soybeans. The county often leads Indiana counties in farm prod-ucts with more than 20 related agriculture businesses, including Koch Fertilizer, Bane Equipment Sales Inc., Ceres Solutions, and Clifton & Quigg Fertilizer.

Montgomery County lists over 600 farms (2002 data), with an average farm size around 400 acres and some 270,000-plus acres in cultivation. Along with crops, cattle, beef cows, sheep and hogs are raised.

For farm efficiency and crop yield, farm-ers continually upgrade equipment utilizing the latest technological advances. One such device, the GPS or Global Positioning System, virtually allows farmers to work hands-free in the field, precisely steering tractors and other equipment when plowing, planting and harvesting crops.

The business economy is also strong in Crawfordsville and Montgomery County. This strength can be credited to a diversity

of industry, community commitment and a dedicated, well-educated workforce. Local industries include printing, automotive and agricultural parts manufacturing, the food industry, book warehousing and distribution, corrugated containers manufacture, and plas-tic and metal forming.

Location, too, plays an important part in the success of the area’s economy. Crawfordsville/Montgomery County is positioned between Lafayette and Indianapolis, with easy access to interstate and rail transportation. Set next to Interstate 74 and U.S. 32 is the Nucor Road Industrial Corridor, home of several high-tech, steel-related industries known world-wide for industry innovation and sought-after employment opportunities.

The 325-acre Crawfordsville Commerce Park incorporates state-of-the-art design stan-dards to attract knowledge-based industries and emerging technologies. The site features boulevard entryways, extensive wooded areas, waterscapes and walking trails, creating a “campus-like” feel that sets it apart from other developments. It’s located north of the city, just off Interstate 74 and U.S. 231.

Perhaps what will draw the most atten-tion to the area in the near future is the county’s first ethanol plant, which is sched-uled to begin operations in 2007. Looking to capitalize on the ever-increasing demand for affordable, clean-burning alternative energy sources, this 80-acre facility aims to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol a year from 40 million bushels of corn. It’s also expected to produce some 315,000 tons of dried distiller grain for livestock feed. This facility is also strategically located off U.S. 231.

Adding to the success produced by a solid balance of traditional industry and innovative commerce is the area’s reputation for produc-ing a well-prepared workforce with a strong work ethic. Several local college programs are in place to ensure that local industries have a broad workforce pool with the skills needed for the 21st-century workplace. Training can even be tailored to meet a specific company’s needs. For example, Ivy Tech Community College works closely with companies through its Crawfordsville satellite campus to create courses to meet employment needs.

A livable community for everybody is the housing goal in Crawfordsville. Whether the desire is for new home

construction with big floor plans, a registered historic home, or the convenience of condo living, Montgomery County offers up a mix to meet all residents’ needs.

Known for good schools, shopping, entertainment, parks and a low crime rate, Crawfordsville beckons with a central loca-tion, a short driving distance to Indianapolis, and reasonable housing prices. Two-bedroom condos range from $115,000 to $145,000, and the older home market reaches to $200,000.

New home construction is priced between $110,000 to $250,000.

Condo construction continues in the area, with some new units offering amenities like 1,400-plus square feet, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and double garage space. While most sites are available to all age groups, some are targeted for the 65-plus age group. Condo units are located throughout the Crawfordsville area, including downtown, where some historic buildings have been renovated into living spaces. Downtown loca-tions with historic and new construction

condos offer easy walking access to shopping, entertainment and community events.

Crawfordsville is also known for its his-torical architecture, and older homes with plenty of heritage regularly come on the mar-ket. Priced between $150,000 and $200,000, these one-of-a-kind homes sit on larger lots with stately old trees providing canopies of shade. Most of these homes offer four to five bedrooms, with some reaching up to 5,000 square feet and three stories.

While the historic home market main-tained the lead in home sales within the area for a number of years, the trend now is younger families purchasing new home construction. With an average price range of $110,000 to $140,000, the typical floor plan is a split-level, 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a dou-ble garage. The higher end of this market reaches up to $250,000, with executive-style homes at 2,500-plus square feet, which typi-cally includes a full basement and an extra family room.

With the draw of good schools, a low crime rate and lots of family-geared entertainment, growth in the county includes a spill-over market from Indianapolis — those wanting to move out of a big city to the quiet of country life. With the installation of the ethanol plant, additional growth is expected.

A rich cultural life in Crawfordsville and Montgomery County is reflected in the numerous museums, historic sites

and activities designed to provide something for everyone.

In the past several years, the community has enjoyed a growing Latino influence, as many Hispanic families have located in the area due to jobs in local industries. An active Hispanic Center, housed at Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, offers tutoring and interpretation services. It is estimated that 2,000 Hispanic individuals reside in Montgomery County.

For more information on all the festi-val fun and sites to see in and around Crawfordsville and Montgomery County, con-tact the Montgomery County Visitors and Convention Bureau at 765-362-5200 or visit www.crawfordsville.org.

Festivals

Annual festivals include the Strawberry Festival, Crawfordsville Fourth of July Celebration and the Downtown Crawfordsville Juried Art exhibition.

The annual Strawberry Festival is held the second weekend in June on the grounds of the Henry S. Lane Antebellum Mansion, attracting some 35,000 people each year. Live entertainment, talent contests, an antique car and classic farm equipment show, and craft booths fill the day’s agenda.

The annual Fourth of July Celebration, sponsored by the Park and Recreation depart-ment, is held at Milligan Park, a 48-acre site in Crawfordsville. Live entertainment and food vendors enliven the event, with fireworks lighting up the dusk sky.

Each October opens with the Juried Art Exhibit, which features works by honorary artists, student artists and others. Presented by the Crawfordsville Art League, artwork is placed in store windows throughout the downtown area.

The Crawfordsville / Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce hosts the Christmas Parade, held annually on the first Sunday in December.

Ample natural roving spaces play host to organized community events throughout the year, including an annual Thanksgiving Day 5K, called the Sugar Creek Trail Thanksgiving Day Pie Run, and the annual Sugar Creek Canoe and Kayak Race, Indiana’s oldest canoe race, which takes place the last weekend of April and includes recre-ational and competitive categories.

Museums/Historical Attractions

Local museums reflect the history of the area as well as the region’s contribution to national history.

The General Lew Wallace Study & Museum honors the life and works of Civil War Gen. Lew Wallace, the author of Ben

Hur and other works. The museum opened its newest exhibition, “Collective Influence,” in March 2007; it will run through December 2007. This collection honors the contribu-tions Wallace’s wife Susan and stepmother Zerelda made to his life and career. Wallace is said to have credited his wife and step-mother with every aspect of his success as a writer, musician and inventor, and the exhi-bition acknowledges their life work behind the scenes.

The Henry S. Lane Antebellum Mansion is the former home of Henry Smith Lane, who served as a Montgomery County state repre-sentative, U.S. congressman, governor and U.S. senator. As a senator, Henry Lane served as chairman of the 1856 National Republican Convention and is recognized for using his influence to secure the party’s nomination of Abraham Lincoln for president in 1860. Built in 1845, Lane’s home, which sits in the center of Crawfordsville on 4 acres, is listed with the National Register of Historic Places. Presently, the grounds serve as a meeting place for vari-ous community events.

The Speed Cabin was constructed in 1838 by John A. Speed, a Scottish stone mason. After the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, Speed became an active abolition-ist, risking his own life as a “conductor” and a “stationmaster” on the western line of the Underground Railroad. Escaping slaves were concealed in the loft of the small cabin. The cabin was relocated from the Crawfordsville Municipal Park to the Lane grounds in

1989 — an appropriate site, as Lane fought against the extension of slavery in 1856.

Another historic building is the Old Jail Museum, built in 1882. It was the first of seven rotary jails built in the United States. This site was used as a jail until 1973. In 1975, it re-opened as a museum exhibiting the art and culture of the county.

The Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County successfully opened its doors in June 2007. The newly restored Carnegie building served from 1902 to 2005 as the Crawfordsville Public Library. Visitors can view the original mosaic tile floors as they tour the building. Operated by the Crawfordsville District Public Library, the Carnegie Museum is an interesting, interactive and interdisci-plinary museum of Montgomery County and for the people of Montgomery County. The museum’s six galleries have different themes and rotating exhibition schedules. An inau-gural exhibit is a collaboration between Tuttle

Middle School, Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power, the Montgomery County Historical Society, and the Carnegie. “Exploring the Shocking World of Electricity” includes the history of electricity and CEL&P. The Business & Industry gallery salutes both past and present businesses of the county. The Athens Gallery focuses on literature, learning, arts and culture, the military, and democracy. Other galleries include Sports & Pop Culture, which currently features artist Dave Gerard, and much more! The museum is located at 222 S. Washington St., and admission is free. The Carnegie is open Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; group tours are available by appointment.

Other regional historical attractions include Linden Railroad Museum, featuring a collection of memorabilia from the Monon and Nickel Plate railroads; the Ropkey Armor Museum, one of the largest privately owned collections of tactical military vehicles in the world; and the Mid-Town Museum of Native Culture.

Wabash CollegeAt Wabash College, the departments of

Art, Music and Theater not only offer pro-grams of study, but also bring to campus artists and productions from around the world, expanding the appreciation for visual

and performing art among students and the community. Between seven and 10 visiting artists are presented each year, and opportuni-ties range from large orchestral ensembles, to poets, to traveling off-Broadway theater.

The Wabash College art galleries host five exhibitions each year, and there are items from the college’s permanent collection on display. The theater department offers three large, main-stage productions each year, plus student-directed, one-act plays every November. The music department hosts more than a dozen concerts each year, along with a myriad of student and small ensemble performances.

Parks and Recreation

“Something for everyone” is the unof-ficial motto of the Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation program. Through classes, com-munity events and ample city parks with natural roving spaces, the department strives to keep its population fit socially, physically, environmentally and economically. For more information on any of the programs offered by Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation, call 765-362-2809.

Crawfordsville Community CenterThe department’s indoor facility, the

Crawfordsville Community Center is located at Milligan Park. Spanning 26,000 feet, this building houses a weight room, gymnastics room, gymnasium, walking track and group fitness room. There are also locker rooms

and a multi-purpose room with a kitchen. For parental convenience, there’s a supervised children’s playroom.

A recent improvement to this facility was an exchange of room usage — the gymnastics room is now the weight room, and vice-versa. With this swap, the weight room gains 40 per-cent more space needed for the over $20,000

worth of new weight room equipment. The weight room is open from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week.

Gymnastic classes are held once or twice a week, with ages ranging from preschool to high school.

Sports and Fitness ClassesFocusing on the physical well-being of its

citizens, Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation offers a wide range of sports and fitness classes for everyone from preschoolers to seniors. Classes for youth range from gymnastics, to karate, to “NFL Gatorade Punt Pass & Kick.” There’s even a free after-school FitKids pro-gram, with instruction in kickboxing, power walking and basketball, along with numerous other fitness activities.

Adults fare equally well, with classes avail-able in Pilates, Tai Chi and karate, along with volleyball leagues, co-ed softball and basket-ball. A senior “Strength & Stretch” class aims to improve muscle strength and flexibility for graceful aging. Focusing more on social needs, a “Living Well 55+ Club” schedules bingo, euchre, pitch-in dinners and trips.

City ParksBoasting 48 acres, Milligan Park offers a

50-meter swimming pool with water slide and baseball and softball fields. Adjacent to the park is the 122-acre, 18-hole Municipal Golf Course with picnic areas.

Considering its citizens’ environmen-tal needs, nine other city parks are laced throughout the town, providing a pedestrian- and bike-friendly layout. Specific park sites maintain softball fields for men’s, women’s and coed softball teams, as well as for Little League teams. There are also organized Adult and Youth Touch Football and soccer games.

Can you come out and play?

Focusing on the physical well-being of its citizens, Crawfordsville Parks and Recreation offers a wide

Crawfordsville Country Club

The Crawfordsville Country Club over-looks the banks of scenic Sugar Creek and has a long and storied history as a landmark of Montgomery County. Its heritage dates back more than 100 years to when it was the summer home and grounds of Civil War Gen. Lew Wallace, famous politician, and author of the novel Ben Hur and other well-known books. The Crawfordsville Country Club was

established from the Wallace estate in 1906 and has been a centerpiece of the community for business meetings, social events, golf out-ings and fine dining ever since.

The original Wallace home burned in 2005 but has been rebuilt into a first-class facility offering an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, and Montgomery County’s premier din-ing facility for its members and guests.

The club offers a great opportunity for busi-ness and professional meetings, meals, golf outings and social activities, as well as being a prime location for weddings, receptions and other special group events. Individual full and social memberships are available along with non-member rental opportunities for group events and fine dining. For more information, call 765-362-2809.

State Parks/Preserves

Located 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville, off state Route 47 in Waveland, the beautiful sandstone cliffs of Shades State Park are a favorite venue for hikers, canoeists and fishermen.

The adjacent Pine Hills Nature Preserve offers more challenging hiking opportunities. Interpretive naturalist services are offered on a seasonal basis, and 105 non-electric campsites are available.

Crawfordsville Main Street Association

The theme of beauty and environment carries over into the downtown area, where the Crawfordsville Main Street Association spearheads the revitalization and preservation of the town’s unique character.

Development of Crawfordsville as a town began in 1822 when Ambrose Whitlock pur-chased the land. He named the town after his friend William Crawford, who was secretary of the treasury for President James Monroe.

Crawfordsville’s long history and traditions have been preserved. Downtown is rich in historical architecture, with Italianate, Queen Anne and Neo-Classicism influences. Recent renovation and restoration includes convert-ing some of these buildings into living spaces. Since 1999, more than $36 million has been invested in the development and improve-ment of the downtown area, which features more than 200 businesses, a brand-new pub-lic library, and a pedestrian-friendly design to support walking as the primary mode of transportation.

Annual events are scheduled to draw the crowds downtown, including Downtown Party Night, Lunch on the Plaza, Jazz at the Jail (museum) and the December Candlelight Tour of Homes.

RECREATION & ATTRACTIONS

The downtown area is home to more than 200 small businesses, cafés, art galleries and a local theater. A variety of services are offered downtown, including automotive service and repair, bank-ing, beauty salon services, eye care, real estate, photography, insurance agencies, accounting, and legal services.

In addition, a wide variety of eating establishments are offered, such as unique cafés, pizza, Chinese, Mexican, chain res-taurants and fine dining opportunities. Unique shopping venues include flower shops, animal accessories, jewelry stores, novelties, gift shops and pharmacies.

Historic Downtown Shopping

The Crawfordsville Country Club offers a great opportunity for business and pro-fessional meetings, meals, golf outings, weddings, receptions, and other special group events.

Montgomery County and the City of Crawfordsville are both managed by elected boards.

The Montgomery County Commissioners is a three-member elected board serving four-year terms. The County Council is a seven-member board, filling four-year staggered terms. These boards oversee county opera-tions, including approving budgets and sala-ries. Presently, two major road construction projects are being completed, one of which

runs past the new county jail; it is to be named Memorial Drive in memory of fallen officers. Both roads are designed to alleviate congestion within the city of Crawfordsville.

The seven-member City Council, led by the mayor, runs the city of Crawfordsville. City Council members serve four-year stag-gered terms.

The Crawfordsville Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department provide police protection for the area. Both

departments are staffed with detectives, lieu-tenants, sergeants and patrolmen. Department staff also include jail staff and reserve officers.

For fire and rescue emergencies there is both the Crawfordsville Fire Department and a volunteer fire staff for Montgomery County. Crawfordsville Fire Department train-ing includes fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency medical care.
