1. CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. SHAHNAZ MURAD
The new Deputy Director General of Health
(Research and Technical Support)
Dr Shahnaz Murad was the
Director of the Institute for
Medical Research before she is
appointed as Deputy Director of
Health (Research & Technical
Support) on 16 Apr 2014. She is
also the
Director of
SEAMEO-
TROPMED
Regional
Centre,
National
Head of the
Pathology
Service for
the Ministry
of Health and the Executive
Officer for the Inter-Islamic
Network for Tropical Medicine
(INTROM). Dr Shahnaz
graduated from the Royal
College of Surgeons in Ireland
in 1985 and subsequently
obtained two postgraduate
qualifications from London. She
has worked in the Ministry of
Health for more than 25 years.
Prior to becoming the director
of the IMR, she was head of the
Allergy and Immunology
Research Centre at the IMR.
Her field of
specialization
is
immunology.
She
established a
large number
of specialised
diagnostic
tests in the
field of
immunology and established
the allergy diagnostic service
for the Ministry of Health. She
established the Malaysian Stem
Cell Registry in 2000. She has a
large number of publications in
International Journals in the
field of Immunogenetics and
Allergy.

She is a member of a number of International committees which includes the TDR/WHO and Chairs
the Governing Board for SEAMEO REFON in Indonesia. Within the country she is a board member of
the National Ethics Board, National Biosafety Board, National Herbal Council, National Committee for
Research and Development in Herbal Medicine, National Committee for Clinical Research, National
Stem Cell Committee and many others. She also chairs a number of National Committees including the
National Herbal Monograph Committee and National Committee for Containment of Wild Polio. In
addition to the above she is a reviewer of a number of international journals and sits on a number of
committees that reviews research grants.

opportunity to congratulate you on your official appointment as Deputy Director General of Health for Research and Technical Support, which takes effect today.
From our years leading IMR and CRC respectively, we have shared a strong
bond; one that transcends the convergence of basic science and clinical science. We, in the CRC will continue to support NIH in its quest, and we are behind
you all the way to ensure that our institutes remain the centres of research excellence for Malaysia.
I also want to thank you for making a personal call to me on your first day
of work to update me on the National Registry Unit which you are very supportive of and ask me what issues CRC wants to bring up to you. I really appreciate that.
