Raise your school profile

Education for Employability is all about making connections with the world outside the window. Your local community will be very interested to hear what you have been doing during EmployabilityFEST so why not tell them through the media?

CCEA will be conducting our own PR campaign, but you can add real value by contacting the press in your local area. Tell them what you are doing and ask them to send a photographer and/or a reporter to your school. This is a great way to keep local employers, parents and the wider community involved and informed.This document will guide you through developing your own PR plan for EmployabilityFEST ‘08

EmployabilityFEST ‘0812 – 23 May

Here’s how to do it!

Step 1: Preparing a News Release: Think like a reporter!

Consider your FEST activity carefully.•What are the most important messages you want to get across? Keep this information at the beginning •of the document.Outline what the event is and when it’s happening, why it is important, who is involved, focus on what’s •interesting.Include a quote from your principal and/or the employer involved.•Keep it short and snappy, avoid irrelevant information.•Try to keep it to 2-3 pages including the notes to editors. Include your school logo.•Refer to the sample news release (P4-6).•

Step 2: Contact the Local Media

Call the local papers and radio stations 1 week in advance of your event – See the lists (P8-19) for details •of press in your area.Brief them on your activity; tell them what’s interesting about it.•Refer to your news release for details.•Follow up with a media invitation by email asking them to send a reporter and/or photographer to your •school. Outline the relevant details such as when & where the event will take place. See sample media invite (P7).Be sure to give a mobile number and contact name so that journalists who turn up on the day know who •to contact.

Step 3: On the Day of the Event

Be on hand to meet any photographers/journalists that turn up.•Assist them in arranging good photographs. Identify a suitable location for photos and get your “FEST ’08 •Banner” in the background.Make sure a spokesperson is available in case of an interview opportunity. Brief them before the event so •they are clear about the messages you wish to get across.Have a photographer of your own on hand to take photos.•At the end of the day send the news release out to the press with the best photos. Send no more than 2 •photos.

CCEA High School gets the creative juices flowing withlocal entrepreneurEmployabilityFEST ’08 is sweeping the country. CCEA High School arranged a visit from a local entrepreneur. Mr Bloggs, renowned businessman, gave an inspirational talk to Yr 9 students about the importance of innovation in the workplace and how it features strongly in his own organisation.

‘This is supporting the Education for Employability programme as part of the Northern Ireland Curriculum’.

Principal, Mrs White, was delighted with the pupils’ response. She commented,

“The pupils’ reaction to Mr Bloggs was fantastic. They were really engaged and interested in what he had to say. It was inspirational for them to hear from someone who had actually built up his own business.

Education for Employability focuses on the real skills needed in today’s modern workplace. It helps them to see that there is a purpose to what they are learning in school and a connection with the world of work”

Mr Bloggs was impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, stating;

“It’s great to be involved with something as worthwhile as the education of our children. It’s our duty as employers to invest in the future workforce of Northern Ireland. With the introduction of Education for Employability, we can be confident in the abilities of our potential future employees.

CCEA High School is a forward looking and innovative school; one from which others could learn a lot” CCEA High School would love to work with other employers. If you are an employer and are interested please contact [email protected]
