BLACKBOARD ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM

• Blackboard is a Web-based integrated teaching and learning environment.

• Blackboard Learn 9.1 is a "next generation" online learning management system consisting of :

• The Blackboard Learning System, a course management system

• The Blackboard Community System, a community and portal system

• The Blackboard Content System, a content management system

BLACKBOARD SYSTEM

• Blackboard has been available at UIC since May of 1999. Course site

development and navigation is accomplished through a consistent and

easy-to-use web browser user interface.

• In UIUC, each medical student has both UIC and UIUC NetIDs.

• Any UIUC medical student is eligible to access Blackboard.

• Any instructor can request a course site for their class by filling out the

"Request a site" online form.

MOODLE ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM

• Moodle is a free source e-learning software platform.

• Moodle has several features considered typical of an e-learning

platform, such as assignment submission, discussion forum, grading,

and online quiz.

• Moodle can be used in many types of environments such as in

education, training and development, and business settings.

• In UIUC, instructors need to contact Med School IT office to set up

Moodle courses.

• Online cases are very popular among students.

• Online cases are good tools for instructors to facilitate students’ self-

direct learning. Instructors can use them as:

• Assignments

• Assessment

• Group activities

• In-class discussion

VIRTUAL EDUCATION TOOLS

• Virtual education refers to instruction in a learning environment where

teacher and student are separated by time or space, or both, and the

teacher provides course content through the use of methods such as

course management applications, multimedia resources, the internet,

and videoconferencing. Students receive the content and communicate

with the teacher via the same technologies.(Kurbel, 2001)

• Virtual education tools include:

• Virtual Classroom

• Virtual Operating Room

• Virtual Patient

• Virtual Hospital

VIRTUAL PATIENT

• The term virtual patient is used to describe interactive computer

simulations used in health care education.

• In Harvard, the Virtual Patient Tutorial Library was created to

complement the "Virtual Patient", an interactive web-based program

enabling users to interact with computer-based patients in simulated

clinical encounters.

• The Virtual Patient topics range in contents:

• Literature reviews

• Diseases-based clinical reviews

• Normal physical exam instruction

• Pathophysiological mechanisms

• Radiology

SECOND LIFE

• Second Life is an online virtual world developed by Linden Lab which

was launched on June 23, 2003.

• Second Life is used as a platform for education by many institutions,

such as colleges, universities, libraries and government entities.

• Top 10 medical sites in Second Life, including:

• Ann Myers Medical Center

• Virtual Neurological Education Centre

• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

• Heart Murmurs
