History:
New York City was founded by Dutch in 1624 and called New Amsterdam. Forty years later it was captured by the British and renamed New York. The first Europeans were Vikings. The American Region was colonized by several European countries. They were Spain, France and England. New York City is exceptionally diverse. The term „melting pot” was first coined to describe densely populated immigrant neighborhoods. In 2000 36% of the City´s population was foreign born.

The skyscrapers of the business district are all in Manhatten. The first were built in 1903, 1913. Manhatten was built on a modern plan of streets and avenues. Most streets go from east to west and have numbers instead of names. Most avenues go from north to south. Brodway, the original Indian path, which is now a famous theater center. Fifth Avenue – New York´s most famous shopping street, divides the East Side from the West Side.
