Community First Yorkshire is an influential regional charity and membership body that works with voluntary and community organisations, social enterprises and rural communities across North, South and West Yorkshire. We work to strengthen groups by building their capacity, skills, know-how and confidence. We can help with everything from governance and funding, to strategic planning and community engagement through one-to-one support, training, funding advice and signposting.

We believe that connecting communities is vital to encouraging proactivity, community engagement and peer learning. Our aim is to enable the strengths within a community to be identified and nurtured to achieve the community’s own vision. This might be reducing social isolation and loneliness, improving health and wellbeing or taking forward a new community project.

We give voice to community issues and needs by empowering and inspiring communities. We do this by involving, consulting, uniting and amplifying the voice of our members and communities to shape and influence the policies that affect them.

We develop partnership and collaboration opportunities to create stronger communities that are empowered to bring about lasting change. Through our projects, we work with our partners to tackle the diverse issues that communities face to make them stronger.

From starting a community cinema to running a Men’s Shed, from trustee training to untangling a governance issue, from updating your policies to influencing change - we’re here to help.

Welcome to our second annual conference for voluntary and community organisations in North, South and West Yorkshire. Hear from experts, share insights and new thinking, and get together to help to create a culture of curiosity.

Whether you’re a charity, community group, trustee or VCS leader – we all have one thing in common. We’ve all started from a position of curiosity by asking questions, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. How many of our organisations would exist today if someone hadn’t asked ‘What if…?’

Keeping our curiosity alive is vital to understanding our beneficiaries, exploring new funding and finding innovative ways of working to greater support the communities that we serve.

This event aims to give you the space and time to explore new ideas and discover new concepts, and importantly to answer the question ‘How can curiosity help us to thrive?’

You will get a chance to apply what you hear from our guest speakers in our practical workshops led by leading sector partners.

Do you represent a parish council, village hall committee or voluntary organisation, and are interested in how to make the most of your community assets? Perhaps you want to tackle loneliness or find out more about digital and social media trends, recruiting volunteers, or how to get the best from your staff? We’re sure there will be a workshop that will give you new ideas to take away today.

Making new contacts is always one of the best things about conferences, so we’ve included a nice long lunch, as well as some fun with Henshaw’s Hotspots to wake us up again afterwards!

Thanks so much for joining us today – by sharing and moving forward together we can all start creating a culture of curiosity for communities in Yorkshire.

Leah SwainChief Executive, Community First Yorkshire
