Creating A Culture of Prioritising Patients’ Emotional Care And

Support

Research has shown that women struggling with infertility experience the same level of depression as

women with Cancer, HIV and heart disease, and a shocking 42% of respondents in a recent Fertility

Network survey reported having felt suicidal at some point.

The 2016 Fertility Network survey found:

• Respondents felt on average sad, frustrated and worried nearly all of the time.

• 42% experienced suicidal feelings as a result of fertility problems and/or treatment ( In

1997 it was 20%).

• 70% reported some detrimental impact of fertility problems and/or treatment on their

relationship.

• 28% of respondents sought support from Fertility Network UK and 45% from another

organisation or online support.

• Only 17% attended a support group but 52% would have liked to attend had there been

one.

• Improving patient satisfaction is likely to have the greatest impact on overall satisfaction

with the fertility process as a whole.

• Many spoke highly of the healthcare professionals, yet some felt that the healthcare

professionals lacked empathy and that the process felt rushed.

• 75% of respondents had been given information about the clinics counselling service

and how to access it, but 20% hadn’t received any information about it.

• Those who had been offered counselling stated that the availability, frequency and

quality of this is mixed.

70% of respondents DID NOT feel that their clinic had a culture of support that was followed by all members of staff.

73% would like to see better links to support services, and 66% would like their clinic to have a support group they can access.

Key Concerns Raised;- Some staff lacked empathy and sensitivity, in particular consultants who were

very medically focussed, forgetting that bad news needs to be delivered in a sensitive and supportive manner.

- There is very limited or mixed support for patients after a failed cycle, which is when patients are in most need of support.

“Please don't treat me like one of the herd. Realise that this is

horrifically painful. Realise that this is impacting on every single part of

our lives - jobs, relationships, family and friends. They're the

ones who hold the keys to the next available door, so don't make each

stage about barriers.”

take this into account when speaking to patients and don't

“Listen more, make more time for your patients. We are all different

and feel different things at different times. It may be easy for you reading off what our follicle

sizes and womb lining is, but each one of those words means so

much. I know you’re busy and over stretched but just treat us like a

friend and not a number.”

Clinics shouldn’t assume they are offering enough emotional support by just offering

access to a counsellor.

“The clinic called me every day after my egg collection to give me an update on how our embryos were progressing. I also

had an additional call from a nurse just out of courtesy to see how I had coped with the egg collection surgery itself, and

how I was feeling.”

“During appointments and information meetings they were very compassionate. For me direct and honest information

helped me emotionally. When things went wrong they were at the end of the phone and provided me with comforting

advice. Every single member of staff I felt were invested in making this work and were supportive. Maintaining my dignity and helping me maintain the process confidential helped me

too.”

When Support Is Done Well…

“Talking to me as a human rather than a ‘patient’ - being upfront and honest and breaking down technical terms so that

it’s comprehendible, and the personal support.”

Clinics need to recognise that if they are supporting patients in every communication they have with

them, those patients will feel more valued, feel more trusting of the clinic, cope better through treatment

and return to them for further treatment.

They need to develop a ‘Culture of Support’

What is a Culture of Support?

• Empathic patient-centred care.

• A whole team approach to support.

• Every point of contact, for every patient, with every staff member is to

be supportive.

• Everyone understands their responsibilities in supporting patients.

• Encouraging patients to access additional emotional support and

signposting where possible.

• Ensuring the emotional wellbeing of all staff in their roles, and

supporting them in and out of work.

• Regular team meetings covering emotional support and feedback from patients.

• Robust feedback process on patient experience, including emotional support,

with clear process for acting on feedback.

• Offer a range of support services to give patients choice in which is right for

them.

• Provide supportive documents and resources to patients to help them cope with

treatment.

• Create strong links to GPs so that support starts earlier in the process.

• Create links to trusted holistic therapists.

• Provide training to staff on protecting their own emotional wellbeing, and

support them in reducing stress and overwhelm in and out of work.

What Difference Will It Make To Your Patients?

• They will have a better treatment experience, which will help them cope

better with treatment and the outcome.

• They will have more trust in the clinic and their treatment plan.

• They will feel comfortable to challenge and question treatment choices.

• They will feel happier, more in control and less overwhelmed.

• It will help them make essential changes to aid their fertility.

• It will ensure they don’t feel alone and unsupported at an extremely

difficult time for them.

What Difference Will It Make To Clinics?

• Higher retention rates.

• Higher conversion rates when you show potential clients that you prioritise

their emotional health from the very start of the process.

• It demonstrates you are working in line with the HFEA code of conduct.

• Higher success rates due to patients being in a better emotional state

throughout treatment.

• Good reputation and referrals.

• Staff feel supported and valued in their roles.

• It gives you a point of difference over other clinics.

my husband at ease. If the clinic was full of Katie’s the emotional support would be

amazing.”

Emotional support isn’t one size fits all.

All patients cope in different ways and are affected by infertility in different ways.

It isn’t enough to just provide access to a counsellor.

Patients should be encouraged to access the support that is right for them and should feel supported by all staff at the clinic at every point of contact they have

with them.

With success rates remaining fairly static, and add-ons not yet having enough evidence to prove they

positively impact chances of success, clinics need to differentiate in other ways.

Focussing on emotional care is definitely the way forward.
