Keio University is working to globalize research and education and bring new energy to Japan by creating the “Miraisozojuku” (Institute for Designing the Future) for residential education and research

Developing the Capacity of the People

Mitsuyoshi OkanoCEO, Suruga BankChair, Keio University Miraisozojuku Fundraising Committee

The missions of Keio University are to provide a place of learning that is open to everyone and to train leaders who will raise the capacity of the people. Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio University, famously said in his autobiography, Fukuo Jiden, “Feudalism is my father’s mortal enemy.” Following the Meiji Restoration, he pursued not a single position in government; instead he devoted his life to building the capacity of the people through writing and the education offered at Keio University. Those are our roots, and this is where we turn for inspiration and guidance. The Miraisozojuku project at SFC is both a new form and a new forum for achieving the mission of Keio University. The”people” in this case are not limited to just the people of Japan. I was asked to chair the Fundraising Committee because of my deep agreement and support for the ambition of making the University even more open and accessible to people from other countries. Had Fukuzawa been alive in this age of globalization, I believe he himself would have put into practice these ideas and initiatives, which seek to accommodate change. It is my hope that the Miraisozojuku will develop the skills of people who contribute not only to the reconstruction of post-earthquake Japan, but also to the solution of the challenges that confront the world at large. I look forward to working with you in this endeavor.

The SFC Miraisozojuku will chart the future of Keio University

Professor Atsushi SeikePresident, Keio University

In 2010, the Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) celebrated the 20th anniversary of its opening. Positioned as an “experimental campus” from its very beginning, SFC has pursued significantly more advanced education and research than was being performed at other universities in Japan. Now, SFC is launching a new initiative for residential education, which is still relatively uncommon in Japan. Land adjacent to the current campus has already been acquired for the project. The next step is to build the Miraisozojuku that will serve as the core residential facility. The Miraisozojuku will be more than just another SFC building; it will become a key hub that will serve as the global gateway for Keio University as a whole. It will enable young people who arrive in Japan from other countries with only what they can fit into a suitcase to immediately begin participating in the educational and research activities of Keio University. It is our ambition to infuse the Miraisozojuku with ideas that chart the future of Keio University and we look forward to your generous support.

USHERING IN A NEW AGE WITH THE POWER OF LEARNING

Global-level problem discovery and solving skills

Since its opening in 1990 as Keio University’s “experimental campus,” SFC has been tasked with charting a course for the future and leading the University into a globalized, networked society of the 21st century. In that time, it has graduated nearly 20,000 students, many of whom have already gone on to achieve renown in their fi elds. As we approach our 25th anniversary in 2015, we want to use our intellectual assets that have been built up through initiatives to foster “problem discovery and problem solving skills” and encourage “self-directed, decentralized, collaborative education” to take on new global-level challenges. The Miraisozojuku is a signifi cant step forward into the future.
