HABITS ARE ADDICTIVE Habit formation occurs in the basal ganglia – a cluster of
nuclei between the analytical and emotional brains. Habits are learned in chunks and over time become paired
with dopamine-containing neurons. Dopamine is released by rewarding experiences such as
food, sex, and drugs…and habits. Once habits form, dopamine is immediately triggered when
the habit kicks-in. Even if a habit is “broken” the learned pattern remains in
the brain after the behavior is extinguished. This pattern can be re-triggered by old, durable clues.
Some habits are convenient, but all habits alter one’s brain structure, by-passing conscious control over what we are doing.

“…the conscious mind is like a monkey riding a tiger of subconscious decisions and actions in progress, frantically making up stories about being in control.”

We sow our actions, and we reap our habits;
We sow our habits, and we reap our character;
We sow our character, and we reap our destiny.
