The Foundation board presented a check for $10,000 to Assistant Superintendent for HR Ken Gregorski and former Superintendent Dr. Lance Hindt in April 2016. These funds will support the district’s Teacher Tuition Reimbursement program which gives Allen ISD teacher scholarships for graduate studies or obtaining additional certifications, especially in high-need areas.

For the past three years, the third grade students at Mary Evans Elementary have looked forward to the Economics Unit in social studies and the Financial Literacy Unit in math. The reason for their excitement -- The Economics Store! The original idea came from other teachers in Allen ISD; we loved it and ran with it. The first year was accomplished by “teacher funding” which stretched our pockets a bit. It was a total hit with the students so we knew it would be a learning opportunity that we wanted to continue. We received a grant from the Foundation and that gave us the start-up money that we desperately needed. Our students learn about money, human capital, labor, credit, planned and unplanned spending in the math unit. This is all reinforced by the social studies unit which covers products and services, supply and demand, producers and consumers, scarcity and availability. The students make the products to sell at school; each homeroom class makes a different product. Students set the prices based on the cost to produce the item and what they think the market will support. If the products are priced too high and not selling, a price reduction may occur. If the products are hot, they may run out and scarcity occurs. The store is open for three days. The students work the tables and make change with teacher supervision. The profit that is earned every year needs to benefit others --
because giving back to the community is also a part of the learning experience. The first two years, Allen Community Outreach was the beneficiary of our funds. For the 2015-16 school year we made the decision to give our profits back to the Foundation for Allen Schools -- so that other students and teachers would be blessed in ways that positively impact their education -- just as our third grade students at Mary Evans Elementary have been! Thank you Foundation!
Katie Lanier, srd at aHs Students in the Scientific Research and Design (SRD) class at Allen High
School researched, designed, and built solar charging stations for personal electronics. The
impact of this Foundation grant goes way beyond charging phones. “Students gained real-world problem solving experience by working collaboratively and using critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving to make informed decisions,” said Katie Lanier, SRD teacher. “And produced a usable product that is helpful for their fellow high school students.” The charging stations will be placed through the AHS campus for use by students, staff and visitors. On April 28, 2016, the Foundation invited scholarship donors, parents and the AHS seniors receiving scholarships to attend a special reception in The Commons. The reception gave students the opportunity to visit with the individuals, families and business representatives who are supporting them through scholarship funding – a meaningful experience for both parties! Including the Class of 2016, the Foundation has awarded more than $481,000 dollars in student scholarships!
