President’s Message

Dear Members,

WE SURVIVED FLOWER SHOW

2013! What a beautiful event we cre-

ated. My sincerest thanks to all members

who contributed their talent, time, and

effort to make All Hallows' Eve such a

fabulous and successful Flower

Show. The Judges and attending public

were impressed with the Show’s

creative staging and with the amount of

horticulture submitted for a Fall Show.

I for one am impressed with CGC’s team-

work!

After all of the Flower Show activity, we

prepared Awards Briefs and sent them to

GCO for review. Thanks to all

contributing members for their efforts.

Those of us who were involved needed

each other’s support and suggestions to

get through the process. The teamwork of

CGC was once again evident in getting

the job done.

Another “Thank you” to Christine Hayes,

OSU Extension Master Gardener, for her

“Putting the Garden to Bed” presentation

at our last General Meeting. Her talk on

the end of the season gardening chores

offered practical suggestions for Fall care

of evergreens and shrubs, containers,

flower beds, lawns, tools, vegetable gar-

dens and roses. Remember while cleaning

up your gardens not to compost diseased

plant material or weed seeds.

A warm welcome to CGC new mem-

ber Neil Evans. He has in the past

supported CGC by donating his beau-

tiful photography for fundraising and

we are very excited to have him be-

come part of our Club. We have been

fortunate to have many new mem-

bers join our Club in 2013, and every-

one of them have joined in and

blended well to help CGC with our

common mission to this community.

We are so fortunate to keep thriving

as a Club when so many others are

not.

Stand by for Installation Luncheon

invitations. Jo Ann Bartsch is

working on finalizing details for our

annual event. We will install the new

2014 Executive Board, and a “stress-

free gals time out” is planned.

Mark your calendars for early De-

cember for this fun social event.

The Best to you all,

Lynne

2013 Standard Flower Show

All Hallows’ Eve

October 5-6, 2013

All Hallows’ Eve, our Standard Flower Show, took place Oct 5 & 6 2013, and was

held at the Brecksville Community Center. Members started packing up the van

on Thursday evening and assembled the show on Friday morning, October 4th.

Members then brought in their horticulture Friday afternoon, and designs were

brought in Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Saturday morning Judges

arrived and judging took place at 10:00 a.m.

Aggie Goss graciously hosted lunch for all Judges at her home.

The Show opened to the public on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and again

on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, members disassembled the

show and returned items to our clubroom.

Our overall concept of the show came from a club decision to have a flower show in

October, and the Halloween theme “All Hallows’ Eve” was chosen for the title of

our Flower Show. The theme was carried throughout the show. Each division,

section, and class had its own title and staging followed. For the entrance we

chose the movie “Corpse Bride,” and our lady bride was born. A spooky tree was

added and adorned with bats made from pine cones and painted black leaves.

Pumpkins and chrysanthemum plants were added in front, and a harvest moon

was hung on top of the display. Black tablecloths were used on tables in

horticulture and some in design. Orange ribbons were used on horticulture to

divide the entries. Members also made spiders from pine cones and sticks, and

those were randomly placed throughout the room.

The Flower Show committee would like to thank all members who helped with set

up, and take down. It was so appreciated. Without your help there would be no

Flower show. Thanks to Margaret DeWolf who recruited our Judges and Clerks

for the show. A thank you to Kathy Habib and Jo Ann Bartsch who were there all

day Friday taking in horticulture and helping members identify their plants.

Many new members, Laura Springer, Pam Wetterau, and Marissa Abraham came

and helped with set up too. A big thank you to Glen Siegman who designed our

schedule, posters, flyers, division and class cards, and awards board.

Glenn, you are “Awesome!”

Congratulations to all winners in our show. Everyone deserves a blue ribbon for

having the courage to enter a design, and the beautiful horticulture that was

brought in took a lot of love and care getting it ready.

Thank you to all for making our Flower Show a success!

the Garden Club, as one of its civic projects, helps the Brecksville Beautification

Committee with its holiday decorating throughout the city. Our primary job is

to artistically insert evergreen boughs and other greens into each planter and

help with the other decorative elements. Depending on how many pairs of

hands we have, the job usually only takes an hour or two. Please join us!

If you can participate, let Jo Ann Bartsch know so she can be on the lookout for

Past Meetings

Growing and Showing in a Flower Show: September 24, 2013

At our September membership meeting two of our Master Gardeners, Kathy Habib

and Jo Ann Bartsch, gave us excellent information and tips on growing and showing

horticulture entries for the Flower Show. We learned the big three things to bring on

the blue ribbons: good grooming, good staging, and identifying each plant with the

correct scientific name. While the many rules may seem overwhelming, they can be

mastered! The ladies inspired us to bring in over 200 exhibits! What great way to

show off our horticultural talents!

Putting the Garden to Bed: October 22, 2013

At our October membership meeting, OSU Master Gardener Christine Harris pa-

tiently laid out a strategy for cleaning up our gardens to make spring much more

enjoyable. She covered lawns, roses, shrubs, vegetable and perennial beds as well

as tool and equipment maintenance. Don’t forget that those blades can be sharp-

ened at the Countryside Conservancy Farmers’ Market or once a month at

Heinen’s. Actually, the sharpening guy will come to us if we want to get together

and bring all our tools to one location. Anyone interested?

Jo Ann Bartsch

Chippewa Garden Club

Incoming 2014 Treasurer

Kathy Habib

Kathy Habib joined Chippewa Garden Club in 2003. She saw publicity for an or-

chid talk and joined that night to see if the club would hold her interest after re-

tirement. Kathy has held many positions in our club, including treasurer, CBG

affiliate, hospitality chairperson, and secretary.

Kathy describes her garden as English country deer food.

She started gardening in elementary school with the Cleveland Public Schools gar-

dening program. Participants bought seeds, and a school representative visited

each child’s garden during the summer and graded the garden.

Her gardening philosophy is simply to buy plants and to worry about where to

plant them later. Although she has won petite design awards several times, she

has no training or skill to do floral design. She just keeps adding material until the

arrangement looks done.

Kathy volunteers for the Master Gardeners and was the 2012 Central Atlantic

Region Convention Registrar and Treasurer. She has also served as Flower show

Horticultural chairperson.

Her advice for new & all members is to get involved and her favorite quote is from

one of our founding father famous for his gardens, Thomas Jefferson.

"But though an old man, I am but a young gardener:"

Chippewa Garden Club

Incoming 2014 President

Jo Ann Bartsch joined Chippewa Garden Club in 1995 and has

been a member for eighteen years. In her own words, here’s

the story of how Jo Ann heard about our garden club and why

she decided to join. In September of 1995 I moved in to my

parents' condominium in MacIntosh to take care of my Dad

(Mom had died that summer). He was a very social person and

was always going to lunch etc. One afternoon, there was a

luncheon at Elsie Day's home for a group of retirees from Re-

public Steel where Dad used to work. Funny thing...I talked

him into going with a bunch of flowers....The following week I

saw a notice in the paper about Chippewa with Elsie as the

contact person. I had no idea that garden clubs even existed!

The rest is history. Elsie picked me up for meetings for about a year!

Jo Ann has held every executive board position except President and worked on most of

the committees. One of her most extensive projects was the renovation of the Squire Rich

Herb Garden in 1995.

Her own yard is somewhat naturalistic and not particularly formal. She has a horticul-

tural obsession that pushes her to buy one plant of each resulting in what her daughter

calls hodge-podge and others call specimen plants. She tries to implement the principles

of design in her landscape that she learned in Flower Show school. Jo Ann’s gardening

philosophy is “Do no harm” which means that she gardens organically, uses native plants

and attracts wildlife whenever possible. (Being well acquainted with wildlife in our com-

munities, that should be easy.)

Floral design does not come easily to Jo Ann although she does spend more time consider-

ing the principles and elements even when she takes flowers from her cutting garden to

the dinner table. She prefers entering the petite categories at flower shows. She learned

her design knowledge from Flower Show School and projects that members have done at

our garden club meetings and workshops.

She told me that she’s been saturated with horticultural knowledge from many resources,

including her grandparents’ green houses and large vegetable gardens and through the

Master Gardener program.

Jo Ann volunteers for the OSU Master Gardeners and the Brecksville Historical Society,

She is still working with the Brecksville Bicentennial Committee and will gladly sell you

their most recent book on the history of Brecksville.

Lynne Evans joined Chippewa Garden Club in 1997 after a friend joined and told

her about the club. Some of the positions she’s held with the club have been as
