Dear CALIBR Members, Guests, and Sponsors,

Welcome to the 2019 Global Executive Forum and 20th Anniversary Celebration. The theme for this year’s meeting is Creating Value Through Creativity and Connectional intelligence, which is based on Erica Dhawan’s book Getting Big Things Done: The Power of Connectional Intelligence.

This theme is ideal for our 20th-anniversary celebration because it describes how the relationships CALIBR has built since its inception are still bearing fruit 20 years later. In 1999, when CALIBR was founded as NextGen Network, our first members were in the early stages of their careers. After winning The Executive Leadership Council’s (ELC) essay competition, those members formed a network of leaders designed to help and support each other as they navigated their careers at Fortune 500 companies.

The relationship between CALIBR and ELC is an excellent example of the power of connectional intelligence and how ELC got something “big done” by supporting NextGen Network. ELC saw a gap in corporate America, so its leaders helped steer the organization to address the need for black talent in the pipeline to executive-level positions.

20 years later, CALIBR has positioned itself at the leading edge of transformational leadership development. And many of our founding members are now ELC members themselves. Some even have children who are ELC scholarship recipients and winners of that same essay contest.

Despite the strides CALIBR has made to increase corporate diversity, challenges still exist in the market. There are very few black women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, less than 5% of corporate directors on boards are black, and there are still financial impediments to advancing black entrepreneurship.

We need CALIBR now more than ever!

I look forward to seeing CALIBR leverage the support of its longstanding sponsors, like ELC and Prudential, to address these market gaps in the future. And I’m confident the organization will continue to thrive as a result of members who commit time and energy to recruit new leaders into the pipeline while investing in their own personal growth and development.

Lastly, CALIBR will continue its mission to accelerate the senior-leadership readiness of high potential talent thanks, in part, to the foundation laid by the ten NextGen-CALIBR presidents who preceded me. Your vision and leadership have made CALIBR a success, and I am honored to have followed in your footsteps.

let alone the other side of the world to provide professional expertise or training.

The Internet has partially solved this problem through solutions such as online delivery services and collaboration tools. But immersive experiences delivered through VR and AR will take us much further in the digital future, eliminating distance altogether and extending our definition of reality.

Results from our Tech Vision 2018 survey show, 36 percent of executives indicate removing distance barriers as a driver in their adoption of extended reality solutions.

Accenture calls this phenomenon “Extended Reality” (XR), and it creates entirely new ways for customers and employees to experience the world while giving them omni-present abilities. As shown in the Extended Reality chapter in the Accenture Technology Vision 2018, our annual tech trend report, XR erases the distance to:

• People—With immersive technologies making it possible for employees to be anywhere, companies can bring trainers “on-site” from any location; training scenarios can also be set up anywhere, then run, re-run, and adjusted to give a firsthand experience of different situations, as Wal-Mart is doing by using VR to help managers prepare for Black Friday shopping crowds.

• Information—DHL Supply Chain uses AR glasses in its operations to provide visual displays of order picking and placement direction, freeing operators’ hands of paper instructions and allowing them to work more efficiently and comfortably. By incorporating these extended reality solutions, DHL has averaged 15 percent productivity improvements while achieving higher accuracy rates.i

On the consumer side, people currently use 2D information gleaned from various sources such as web sites to make purchase decisions. XR provides information in 3D by immersing people virtually into products, helping them to visualize offerings and contextualize them into their own environment. Audi, for example, uses virtual reality to let prospective customers design and tour their own custom vehicle, while IKEA uses augmented reality to help customers virtually place furniture into rooms.ii,iii

• Experiences—XR will ultimately allow digital businesses to branch into delivering entirely new product and service offerings, including bespoke environments that cater to customers’ specific wants and needs. Examples include shopping while immersed in a virtual experience as real estate company Redfin is doing by enabling people to “tour” real-world listings without setting foot on the property,iv or developing a customized travel itinerary by using XR to explore potential destinations and hotels before making reservations.

By eliminating the distance in these three areas, companies have many new opportunities to think differently about what is possible. From this, they can create new solutions that improve connections with customers, optimize the performance of employees, or create and monetize new digital products and services.

Extended reality sources talent from anywhereIn a world in which the idea of “place” is no longer important, AR technology and VR technology will also help businesses address the largest workforce challenge they face: the distance between themselves and the talent they need to fuel new business growth.

Through immersive experiences, businesses can tap expertise in thousands of skills from anywhere in the world. XR supports an on-demand workforce approach, which not only saves up to 12 percent in recruitment costs, but also helps businesses engage an ever-growing pool of talent who desires flexibility.v

XR also provides the option to smoothly manage knowledge transfer between generations. People in semi-retirement could still provide their expertise to new hires when needed, such as an experienced oil rig operator sitting comfortably at home while providing equipment maintenance directions to a new worker located on an onshore platform.

What’s more, as XR-based remote control of physical systems becomes common, companies will be able to hire for manufacturing, assembly, and robotics expertise from a global pool of the best candidates, regardless of where they live. The result is an opportunity to redesign business without the limiting factor of distance--and for workers, to eliminate geography-based constraints on opportunity. In this sense, globalization takes on a whole new meaning when distance is eliminated—and provides unprecedented opportunities for people to contribute.

Today, XR is still evolving, and challenges around processing lag and content creation remain barriers to its full maturity. Despite this, our survey indicates that 27 percent of executives state it is very important for their organizations to be a pioneer in XR solutions. As today’s technical limitations are addressed, XR will only grow in capability and impact. To prepare for a world where the most powerful experiences might be virtual, businesses must focus on tactical uses of it today.

Making well-planned forays into immersive experiences now will help build the capabilities needed to transform entire industries tomorrow. As XR becomes pervasive, immersive experiences will eliminate the most important distance of all: the distance between where businesses are today and where they want to be in the future.

Since 2017, the event has been held, with Prudential’s support, in conjunction with the summer meeting to increase new members’ relationship-building opportunities with the entire CALIBR network.

Members on the MoveMarc Tate, a proven and experienced business executive with expertise in management consulting, strategy, and program management, has taken on a new challenge as Senior Strategic Partner Manager for Amazon Web Services.

Michelle Thornhill was recently promoted as the Business Transformation Leader for Corporate Philanthropy and Community Relations in the Wells Fargo Foundation. In this role, she is responsible for leading the ongoing development and implementation of the new foundation strategy which

supports donating $440,000,000 annually to communities in the Wells Fargo footprint. She will also continue to provide oversight and governance for the Wells Fargo Foundation Board. Michelle was also appointed to serve a 2-year term on the Board of Directors for The Greater Charlotte Cultural Trust, which provides endowment management services for the Mecklenburg County Cultural Sector. Michelle and her husband Wayne L. Thornhill, Esquire, co-founded the HūMan Rites of Passage Program to empower 7th-grade boys of color by building character, competitiveness, competence, and citizenship. This program will be administered by the Thornhill Rites of Passage Foundation (www.tropf.org).

Mike Chapman will be inducted into The Executive Leadership Council in 2020. He is currently a Managing Director and Partner with Accenture Strategy.

Robert Jefferson was named Director of Housing Develop-ment for IMPACCT Brooklyn, a New York Affordable Housing Developer.

Tamia Ward-Blakley was recently elected to the Association of Change Management Professional (ACMP) – DC Executive Board of Directors. Serving in the role of chapter secretary, her role will seek to enhance governance and operations for the chapter. She will also support the delivery of a high-

quality ACMP DC member experience, integrate chapter initiatives, and influence engagement practices with chapter members. Tamia was also recognized as a member of the Loudoun 100 for 2019. The Loudoun 100 project recognizes 100 people across various industries and community projects who are making a positive impact on the community through service and commitment to Loudoun County, Virginia. Tamia is being honored for her service on the board for the YMCA Loudoun County and various contributions to youth and non-profit initiatives through her volunteer and social impact contributions.

Tia Cummings was recognized as one of Brand Innovators 40 Under 40 Brand Marketers in the south region. Honorees were nominated by the Brand Innovators community which includes more than 25,000 brand-side marketers across the US, Canada, and UK. Winners were then selected by the Brand

Cheryl Wade recently joined Cigna as Senior Director, Head of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I). Cheryl joins Cigna after serving as the Head of D&I for Booz Allen where she led the firm’s D&I Center of Expertise, drove strategy, and developed programs to advance a culture of inclusion. In her role,

Cheryl will lead the development and execution of Cigna’s enterprise-wide D&I strategy in alignment with Cigna’s organizational mission and business goals. She will be responsible for an integrated D&I strategy that supports value creation for the business by advancing a diverse and inclusive culture and improving health equity and outcomes for the employees, clients and communities that Cigna serves.

Craig Fluker has been promoted to Corporate Vice President at New York Life Insurance Company. His responsibilities will include budgeting, payroll, administration, on-boarding and off-boarding of employees as well as the design, model, test and implementation of field manager incentive compensation plans.

Hillary John assumed a new role as Director of AARP Foundation’s Office of the President. In her new role, she will support the Board of Directors, helping to plan and execute AARP Foundation’s board engagement strategy. She will also manage AARP’s internal communications and engagement,

and coordinate the integration of AARP Foundation initiatives across the enterprise.

Leslie Katrice Simpson accepted a new position as the Vice President of Finance and Accounting at Allegheny Electric Cooperative, Inc. This key senior leadership role reports directly to the President and CEO. In her new role, Leslie will provide financing and accounting expertise to fulfill the

organizations’ mission to provide its members with a reliable supply of wholesale power at a competitive rate. Her major areas of responsibility will include overseeing and reviewing the work of the finance and accounting staff, providing monthly financial reports to the President and CEO and Board of Directors, and attending and providing support for all board meetings.

My overall vision was to grow the organization to impact more people and to make it world class as the leading organization for African American corporate managers. I also wanted to ensure NextGen Network grew and expanded to be a premier organization that is national in scope.

How has being president of CALIBR/NextGen Network impacted your career and your global leadership capabilities? Along with affording me better visibility and more credibility, being president provided me with a stronger network, better relationships, and mentoring support. It also provided me access to information, knowledge, and ideas to bring back to my business.

Why is CALIBR important for corporate, academic, non-profit, and individual leadership success? CALIBR is important because it helps to build a network of like-minded professionals. It provides great education, development, and training opportunities and great support and mentoring throughout your career.

What is your proudest achievement as CALIBR/NextGen President? My proudest achievement is how closely we connected with the Executive Leadership Council (ELC), so that NextGen Network members were able to form relationships and benefit from guidance while navigating their careers. I am also proud that we were able to secure funding to support the organization.

What was your overall vision for the organization while you were president? I wanted to ensure that we operated as an ecosystem and supported each other personally and professionally. I also wanted members to deepen their network with ELC members to further their career objectives.

How has being president of CALIBR/NextGen Network impacted your career and your global leadership capabilities? It was a great leadership opportunity. It gave me the opportunity to present at ELC events and board meetings. It enabled me to develop more meaningful relationships with ELC members as we collaborated on some shared objectives around the talent pipeline.

Why is CALIBR important for corporate, academic, non-profit, and individual leadership success? By having access to a strong network of like-minded individuals, it’s easier to be intentional around career and other engagements. You also have greater exposure and access to knowledge from people who are represented at the various corporations and non-profits. The more we know and have access to, the easier it is to incorporate broader perspectives and insights into our decisions.

Describe your current role: I’m responsible for digital innovation on emerging tech and developing technology for the emerging workforce and customers. I also develop strategies for the digital channel as it pertains to driving parity and technology reuse across the board.

What is your proudest achievement as CALIBR/NextGen President? As part of the fall meeting, as you know, we always have a CEO come and talk. When I became president, I decided that NextGen needed to be about the future. I was proud we had CEOs coming to us and chatting with us. When a CEO comes and talks to an organization, that validates the belief that they have in the organization which validated the talent we had coming to our fall meeting.

What was your overall vision for the organization while you were president? My vision was to start us on that path where we were seen as a destination organization, not a wait station to get into Executive Leadership Council (ELC). It was activating the previous president’s strategic plan of making the organization bigger and better.

How has being president of CALIBR/NextGen Network impacted your career and your global leadership capabilities? My tenure as president prepared me to be a leader. I made a lot of mistakes as president, but I learned from them. It gave me the confidence to know that I could lead. There is nothing more satisfying than leading your peers with a mandate from your peers. I tried on a daily basis to be the best possible leader.

Why is CALIBR important for corporate, academic, non-profit, and individual leadership success? CALIBR is equipping people with the things needed for success and leadership and has quality members. CALIBR is comprised of the next leaders of Fortune 500 companies. It’s all about giving those leaders the opportunity to hone those leadership skills so they know how to perform. It’s a fun group, and I couldn’t be prouder of the organization that CALIBR has become. I feel honored to have been one of the presidents of an outstanding organization. When you look at the leaders of CALIBR and see their success and how it has translated to their day jobs, you see exactly what ELC set it out to be.

What is your proudest achievement as CALIBR/NextGen President? My proudest achievement as CALIBR President involved two seminal and pivotal moments. I am proud to have been a part of the founding group of members that created the organization and then later on serve as president. As president, I led the transition from NextGen to CALIBR while restructuring the organization to ensure that it reflected and could serve the needs of members who had grown and were no longer recent graduates but in fact were now looking to get to c-suite roles.

What was your overall vision for the organization while you were president? My vision for CALIBR was for every surface of the organization to be an opportunity for learning for its members and leaders. I aspired to make the organization future ready. I wanted the programming to be ever-evolving and future-focused, even pushing the edge to stay out in front of the evolving needs of members and their companies.

How has being president of CALIBR/NextGen Network impacted your career and your global leadership capabilities? CALIBR served as a laboratory for me to push the envelope with concepts around leadership development and leverage all of the latest research on how adults learn. I have a passion for helping professionals realize their potential. CALIBR gave me a vehicle for actualizing this passion and feeding that part of my soul.

What was your overall vision for the organization while you were president? My vision for CALIBR was for the organization to be able to stand on its own and redefine its mission and values. CALIBR became stronger as an independent organization by increasing its overall financial health, strengthening the membership intake process, and outlining a formal succession plan for organizational leadership. Through a strategic planning process, that included surveying the membership, we defined ourselves as a global organization focused on the overall development and leadership growth of mid to senior-level leaders.

How has being president of CALIBR/NextGen Network impacted your career and your global leadership capabilities? Being president provided me with a perspective that enhanced my overall focus on diversity and inclusion.
