OVERVIEW

Allina Clinic of Ramsey is planning a new clinic scheduled to begin construction in the first quar-ter of 2011.

This is an exciting project seeking to make large changes and innovations that can be used as a prototype for future Allina clinics.

Partnering with the MCAD Human Factors class Allina has requested the class produce an array of ideas that fall within the catagories of:

- structure - inner workings - online management - efficient facility operations - clinic aesthetic and atmosphere - positive patient experience - private and personal patient options

DEMOGRAPHIC /AUDIENCE

The area of Ramsey, Minnesota is a developing suburban community. There is a feel of hometown privacy with an emerging industrial influence from the near by Twin Cities.

The users of the clinic are as diverse as the com-munity it is situated in. Families with children, elderly, single young adults as well as families and individuals that come from more rural areas outside of Ramsey.

Allina seeks to provide a facility that doesn’t exclude a certain group from the general func-tions of the clinic.

TONE / PERSONALITY

The focus of the facility, as presented by Allina, was to create a space that conveys a sense of healing, respectfulness and safety.

Paying close attention to privacy and intuitive way finding a few tonal words for considered develop-ment are:

- clarified - holistic - unobstructed - lean - permutable - efficacious - visceral

Allina’s plan for their clinic of the future is to provide the community with a beneficial experi-ence, not just in the sense of medicinal prescrip-tions, but in the entirety of the facility. From the check in to the furniture to the staff - a soothing environment promotes a sense of overall wellness.

CURRENT PERCEPTION

Hospitals and clinics are seen as the place to go when you are ill. The thought of a hospital visit brings to many individuals a sense of anxiety and irritation.

Families with working parents struggle to shift schedules - making time for a visit to the clinic is simply not convenient.

Those more elderly patients often stress their visit will lead to more conclusions about their current state.

And across the board visitors to clinics dread those hushed minutes in the stiff waiting room and stifling exam areas.

SUCCESS

Success is when:

A trip to the hospital is a personal and enjoyable experience. When those with tight schedules feel the efficiency of scheduling online and swift check in process leads to a productive and satisfactory visit.

The design of the space, furniture, appliances and decor both function and serve as a visually sooth-ing and healthfully stimulating experience - easily accessible and understood by all clinic users.

Patients feel like they are properly educated and included in the hands of their doctors - with whom they share a personal and comfortable relation-ship.

Staff function on a high energy and efficiency basis due to the quality of their workspace.

REQUIREMENTS

Areas of specified importance include:

- the exam rooms - patient doctor relationship - entrance and exit - patient process flow - the story as experienced throughout the clinic

For this project producing fresh and futuristic ideas and ideals for what clinics could and should be like in the coming years.

The MCAD Human Factors class is are the initial brain storming teams - working to produce a variety of unique and optimistic elements that could be implemented within future clinics.

Requirements involving hospital standards are to be taken into consideration but not put in place to damper the creative process. Eventual adaption of original ideas to fit standards is always possible.

FOCUSED STATEMENT

As a statement trying to emphasize the thought process around the major changes and consider-ations that are going into the production of the new Allina clinic the word “realization” really capitalizes the fact that this change is due to an acknowledgment of past flaws and failures.

Stressing the word wellness helps to emphasize the overall scheme of the new clinic - the personal and communal wellness that comes from an open and encouraging space, thoughtful and helpful staff, easy online information and tracking, and personal ease and efficiency within the clinic itself.

COMPETITIVEANALYSIS

What Allina is really seeking to offer their patients is the experience others partially find in less personable environments.

The main appeal, not just as health and wellness are concerned, these days is a quick set-up opera-tion with a pretty face.

- Minute Clinics (especially Target & CVS) - Wellness centers offering: acupuncture herbal supplements/remedies meditation alternative methods of healing

MOOD BOARD

The main inspiration for interior design and architectural elements comes from an investi-gation into traditional hospital decor, inspira-tional and symbolic elements of natural and community and a feeling of freshness spawning from a closeness with the outside world.

CLINIC OF THE FUTURE

Simple, Comfortable, Representative & Sus-tainable.

One main theme that has a re-occuring tendency within the desired tone of the facility could be that of exposed cement, both in supports, select walls and some floor space. The clean lines and industrial surface of cement gives a presence of rigid cleanliness that can be soft-ened with other soft structural lines, patterns from nature and appealing lighting.

CoONCLUSION

CLINIC OF THE FUTURE

Dreaming BigAddressing IssuesFinding SolutionsBeing able to address issues voiced by not just random patients and sources but from relatable people (family members, friends, etc) and even personal experiences is an exciting chance to dream big and affect change.

Finding solutions to an ever-evolving industry while still carrying on with the traditional services expected from health care providers is a complex and crucial experi-ment in what will work in the field tomorrow.

Assigning a voice to this project is just the first step in influencing a deep change in an up and coming facility - from the inside out.
