close at hand with this

simple organizer.

1. Select a curtain rod (#236505)

that includes equipment for hanging.

2. Spray-paint the rod and the

hanging equipment, if desired, in

the color of your choice (we used

black). Allow to dry.

3. Secure the rod to the wall at

each end and in the center. Use

11⁄2-inch S-hooks (#196554) to hang

lightweight utensils from the rod.

perfectlypinnedUse clothespins attached to thin

strips of board for displaying

invitations and cards.

1. Lightly sand all sides of a (2-foot-long) 1⁄4- x 4-inch board. Apply two coats of paint to the

board with the color of your choice; allow to dry.

(We paired two boards together, each painted a

different color, for a staggered, striped effect.)

2. Using a hot-glue gun, attach plastic clothespins

(#232057) to the painted board as shown.

3. Attach two picture hangers (#62958) to the back

of the board, and hang on your wall.

on a mirror.

1. Wipe clean a (28-inch-diameter) beveled-edge

mirror (#33621). Apply flexible painter’s tape to

create a striped pattern and to cover the areas

that will remain unpainted.

2. Select paint colors of your choice in

a satin finish. Dip a foam brush in the

paint, and then lightly dab the brush

into sand. Paint the stripes; let dry.

Remove the painter’s tape.

3. To create the dots, dip the end of

a foam roller into the paint and then

into the sand, and dab onto the mirror,

rotating it gently for even coverage. Let dry.

4. Hang the mirror using the included hardware.

good to knowSome of these projects

use only a small amount of paint. You can save time and

money by using leftover paint from previous projects. Or, Lowe’s offers Paint Samples in Any

metallicwall artCreate shapes from copper tubing

to add interest in any room.

1. Gently bend and stretch a length of lightweight

copper tubing (#43498) into a shape that suits your

wallspace. Avoid creating sharp corners, which will

cause the tubing to weaken and break.

2. Hold the tubing against the wall, and determine

the locations for securing. Screw 11⁄4-inch cup hooks

into the wall at these places, and then slide the

tubing into each hook.

chic storagePut photos in plain view with

these pretty boxes.

1. Collect an assortment of shoe boxes in various

sizes. Using wallpaper of your choice and masking

tape, wrap each box and lid separately like you would

wrap a gift.

2. Choose decorative knobs that complement your

selected wallpaper patterns. A variety of knobs can

be found in the hardware department at Lowe’s.

3. Remove the included bolt from each knob. On

an end panel of the shoe box, center the knob low

enough to allow space for the lid. Using scissors,

puncture a hole, and push the knob through it.

4. To secure, reattach the bolt to the knob from

the inside of the box. If needed, further secure the

knobs using a hot-glue gun.

Adorned with a cheerful wallpaper pattern and two paint colors, simple doorscan become a focal point in a bedroom. Here, a floral wallpaper border is attachedon the door panels to complement the striped paper on the walls. You can matchyour decor and add your own twist by selecting another color palette with differentcoordinating wallpaper patterns. Joining the doors with hinges allows you to fold theheadboard for easy transportation or to use it as a folding screen.

General: The overall dimensions of thisheadboard are approximately 11⁄2 inchesdeep, 60 inches wide, and 80 inches high, making it most suitable for a full- (as shown)or queen-size mattress. Step 1: Place the two doors on a flat surface (or on sawhorses) with the twolong edges facing and the smallest panelson the top. Step 2: On the front of the doors, applypainter’s tape around the borders of the upper eight panels. Using an angled paintbrush, apply two coats of light-pinkpaint inside the borders. Allow to dry, andthen remove the tape. Step 3: Tape around the panels again, butplace the tape inside the borders this time.Using an angled paintbrush, apply two coatsof dark-pink paint. Allow to dry, and thenremove the tape.Step 4: Carefully measure the dimensions ofthe raised portions of each light-pink panel.

This closet was beginning to feel morelike a storage locker than a shared dress-ing space—with scarves, belts, neckties, and handbags spilling from the shelves. The couple needed a system that wouldput accessories and apparel in plain sightand easy reach, plus a subtle division be-tween her side and his side. Raised-panelmaple cabinetry, watery-blue walls, andsand-colored carpet lend the relaxing feelof a coastal cottage.

ALL ABOUT ACCESSORIES1 Three rounded shelving units, stackedvertically in a corner, turn an otherwiseunused niche into a functional place tostore handbags, hats, and accessories.2 The extra space between the upper cabinetry and the ceiling is used tostack spare pillows and blankets.3 Clothing rods mounted at 79-inchheights leave ample room for dresses, coats, and long skirts.

what they didTHE CHALLENGE: The kitchen neededto accommodate the homeowners’ busy lifestyles, which include regularentertaining. The couple also wantedthe kitchen to celebrate the natural landscape just beyond the windows.THE SOLUTION: Simplifying the floorplan allows for efficient traffic flow andcreates a variety of areas for guests, including island space and a hospitalitycenter with a sink and beverage chiller.

This space overlooks a pretty stretchof hillside peppered with boulders, lend-ing a secluded feel in the natural setting. The couple wanted to create an upbeat, casual, yet sophisticated, kitchen designthat harmonizes with the views.

The homeowners changed the floorplan in order to bring more openness intothe kitchen and mimic the great outdoors.Because they entertain quite frequently, they wanted the area to flow easily forsmall and large groups.A generous-sizedisland provides the perfect place for gueststo perch while the homeowners cook. Italso enhances the kitchen’s airy feel andhelps to define the space.

Sleek appliances are paired with nature-inspired materials, while bold dabs of redelevate the color palette. The result is a kitchen that packs a double punch—avisual “wow”and a streamlined workflow.

versatile ventsshop smart: range hoods

Today’s range hoods offer more thanclear, clean air—chic finishes and environmentally friendly options also are available. Use this guide to find a model that works for you and your kitchen.

RETRACTABLEISLAND WALL-MOUNTEDIf you have a cooktop that is built intoyour kitchen’s island, you still can reapthe benefits of a traditional range hood without compromising style. A free-mounted range hood has the features of a retractable or wall-mountedhood, but easily mounts to the ceilingover your island.

KitchenAid 36-inch Island-MountedCanopy (shown above)• 600 CFM• 6.0 sone ratingFeatures• dual fluorescent lighting• fully adjustable mounting system forsimplified installation

Retractable vent systems are ideal for islands where an overhead hood may not fit, or for cooktops where a concealed system can create a cleanwork area.

Broan 48-inch Elite Rangemaster(shown above)• from 600 to 1500 CFM (sold separately)Features• Heat Sentry technology adjusts the speed of the blower when high temperatures are detected

Whirlpool Gold 36-inch Pop-upDowndraft Vent System• exhausts 600 CFM• 6.0 sone ratingFeatures• dual centrifugal fan blower that shutsoff automatically in the lowered position

Wall mounts, the most widely used vent systems, work with any cooktop orstove that has a backsplash and usuallycan be vented outside easily. Use yourcooktop’s width to find a range hoodthat fits.

Broan 30-inch Elite Rangemaster Wall Range Hood (shown above)• from 280 to 1500 CFM (sold separately)Features• infrared lamps keep dishes warm whileothers are being prepared (optionalbacksplash recommended when usinginfrared heat lamps)• infinite-speed control with blowermemory “remembers” last setting used• durable steel construction with easy-to-clean interior

KitchenAid 30-inch Wall Canopy Range Hood• 600 CFM• 6.0 sone ratingFeatures• three fan speeds and built-in halogenlighting for your workspace

magical makeover: bath

When a bath is designed for individual needs and different life stages, whether

current, anticipated,or even unforeseen, it truly becomes a place for peace of mind and

relaxation. Imagine an expectant mother whose center of gravity is awry—grab bars

help steady her while getting in and out of the tub. For a man with an old football

knee injury, a zero-threshold shower makes daily tasks less painful. And open sink bases

leave room for those who require seating, in a wheelchair or otherwise. All of these

solutions and many others are applied through the principles of universal design.

Universal design is about products that are more comfortable to use and environments

that make life easier for as many individuals as possible, regardless of age or ability. Not

long ago, the perception of universal design was that style succumbed to accessibility.

Today, there are more and more universally designed products available in the latest

colors and finishes, so homeowners get the best of all worlds.

This bath reflects today’s styles and trends—from the dual-use layout to the sleek

products to the accessible features.Welcome to the universal design bath from Lowe’s and

Ohio State University. We hope you enjoy this private tour especially for the readers

of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Home and Garden.

With universal design, homeowners get it all—beauty,

comfort,and function.

universal designLowe’s and Ohio State University have teamed up to tellthe story of universal design. In 2006, they partnered to builda universally designed kitchen exhibit at the university’s FarmScience Review. The exhibit was toured by thousands ofpeople, including the general public as well as interior designstudents from several colleges, and Lowe’s received thousandsof letters from the readers of Lowe’s Creative Ideas for Homeand Garden, eager to learn more about universal design.Because of that success and a commitment to this principle, the two decided to build a universally designed bath at theFarm Science Review for 2007.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity to get the wordout about universal design,” says Melissa Birdsong, Lowe’s Vice President of Trend, Design & Brand. “We hope evenmore people will learn how easy it can be to make a homeaccessible for all—and make it look fabulous as well.”

seamless shower1 The zero-threshold shower makes thisspace accessible for anyone and providesspa-like style. Without the use of a showerdoor, the only transition from the main floorto the shower floor is a visual one—the tileschange from oversized 18-inch tiles to small1- x 3-inch subway tiles. On the showerwalls, a row of glass tiles breaks up thespread of the 12-inch tiles. 2 Two showerheads—both featuringpolished-nickel finishes—give freedom of movement for anyone standing or sitting. The handheld showerhead can move upand down the slide bar.3 Grab bars found throughout the bath at different angles and heights offer stability for those who need it.4 Adjustable body jets add luxury to the shower.5 A built-in bench provides seating and a place for toiletries.

subway tilesRectangular tiles, often called subwaytiles, are showing up in the latest designshowrooms in various sizes, colors, andstyles. In this bath, slate-look mosaic subway tiles also serve a universal design purpose. On the shower floor, the increased number of grout lines decreases the risk of slipping. The tiles add a chic look to the bath while also providing a practical element. For properdrainage, the shower floor slopes slightly toward the drain.

essential elements of universal design

The faucets have single levers that are easy to grasp and use with one hand.

An 18-inch chair-height toilet is positioned so that the user has at least 18 inches of comfort room on the sides as well.

Grab bars are placed in the tub and shower and beside the toilet, helping with stability and with sitting and standing.

The vanity includes ample knee space for seated users, and the sinkbase does not restrict movement underneath the vanity.

There are limited thresholds—or no thresholds—in the entryways,on the floor, and in the shower.

Multiple sources of light, including general, task, and in-cabinetlighting fixtures, provide sufficient illumination in the room.

functional vanity2 The vanity areas feature KraftMaidPassport Series cabinetry, which offersspecial height and access options. The dual-use design includes taller (36-inch)and shorter (32-inch) cabinet heights.Tilting mirrors adjust for users who arestanding or seated.3 The cabinetry features 9-inch-high and 6-inch-deep toe-kicks. 4 Solid-surface countertops with a contrasting color strip in the middle makethe edges easier to see. The D-ring pullsare simple to grasp.5 The self-rimming, sloping sink isdesigned to sit beyond the edge of thecountertop for access without reaching. The lever-handle faucet can be turned on and off with one hand.

private comfort1 Placing the toilet at least 18 inches from the adjacent walls allows freedom of movement for anyone, including those in a wheelchair or using a walker. At standard chair height, an ADA approved 18-inch-high toilet is easier to use becauseit doesn’t require as much bending. Grabbars also help with sitting and standing.

working with color Use the color wheel you learned in art class to create a scheme for yourhome. The basic color wheel showscolors at their purest, but most peopleprefer using lighter or darker values(created by adding white or black) of these basic colors. Consider the following four types of color schemesderived from the wheel, and use values that appeal most to you.monochromatic schemes involve asingle color used in one or more valuesor intensities. (Intensity refers to thebrightness of the color.) For example, you could create a scheme using twoor more shades of green.analogous schemes use hues that lienext to each other on the color wheel—such as blue and blue-green—andare held together by the common color(in this example, blue). complementary schemes are based on a pair of colors that lie directly across from each other on thecolor wheel. Green and red are complements, as are yellow and purple.complex schemes are created usingthree or four colors that are equidistant

on the color wheel. Forexample, yellow, red, and

blue form a triangleon the wheel and

work well togetherin a space.

gracefulglobesLine up a few of these tiny planters down the center of a table for a natural look. Or set them in a windowsill, where the globe will catch the sunlight and cast a beautiful glow on the bright-green succulents. The plants can grow in theshallow soil, but you may need to replant them in larger pots if they become too big for the globes.

Step 1: Plant a small succulent or cactus in a 1-inch layer ofpotting soil in a 4-inch-wide clay saucer. Water lightly. Sprinklepearl stone soil cover (#139514) around the plant. Step 2: Place a clear seeded-glass globe (#87316) over thesaucer. (You can glue the globe in place, or simply let it rest on the saucer.)
