Design Brief• Using an A4 Acrylic sheet, laser

cutting, and SolidWorks, design a compact yet efficient gearbox which can pull 10kg up a ramp

• The weight must move 500mm along the positive slope of the ramp

• The gearbox is to be powered by a 6V 9000RPM DC electric motor

Gear Box Designs• Gears are very versatile, many types

exist such as bevel, helical, worm and spur gears

• These gears can be arranged in many ways, such as extensive gear chains, or planetary gearing systems, or combinations of such

• Many of these are not viable to manufacture with the tools we have – a thin sheet of acrylic and laser cutting

• Spur gears are reasonably easy to manufacture and within our mathematical knowledge

Gear Type Pros ConsSpur Gears Inexpensive and easy to

manufacture Relatively simple mathematical analysis

Can fail when under large torque Not suitable for high speed operation

Helical Gears Can achieve high torque Low amounts of noise

More complex to manufacture and analyse Requires extensive gear chains for large reductions

Worm Gears Can handle large amount of torque Simple operation

Very low efficiency Unsuitable for high speed rotation

Planetary Gears Capable of very large reductions Extremely efficient, up to 97%

Can cause high stress on shaft bearings Can be very noisy with the increase of operating speed

The Performance Formula

• By analysing the terms within the formula, it is clear certain characteristics of the gearbox must be in balance for a maximum p – value

• The time value is a squared value and the largest axial dimension is a cubed value; it is important to focus on minimising these values for this mathematical reason

• It is clear that a gearbox can not be perfect in every aspect; a large gearbox can have more torque but will potentially turn gears at a slower rpm

SCAMPER• Substitute• Combine• Adapt• Modify• Put to another use• Eliminate• Reverse

Page 8: Creative journey

Winch• Use the SCAMPER creativity

guidelines to analyse a simple hand crank system

• Modifications can be made, a winch is made to pull massive amounts of weight, we can increase the speed of a winch system in sacrifice of torque, as we do not need to pull thousands of kilograms

• Drawing inspiration from current inventions

Conclusion• Use the creative process• Draw inspiration from real world

ideas and change them to suit our needs; SCAMPER

• Need to take into consideration the tools we have at hand, a laser cutter and a thin sheet of acrylic

• Take into account the skills we have, mathematically and with modelling processes

• Be original
