Bree Fischer for OK Lanes, fifth grade - Mrs. Wheeling, Sidney Elementary School. Top 15 winner

The year 2009 marks the eighth yearthe Sidney Herald and area businesseswill bring the talents of area studentsto life through the Creative Kids spe-cial section.

The editorial portion of this sectionwas written by seventh- and eighth-grade students on the subject “Whatmakes your grandparent ‘grand?’ ”The sharing from area students whenwriting about their grandparent wasawesome, which made it even more dif-ficult to judge. The time and thoughtthat went into each essay made every-one realize how much these youth careabout their grandparents.

Herald editorial staff chose the top15 essays. From those, the first- and sec-ond-place winners were picked. Nospelling corrections or editing hasbeen done to the stories, so what youread is what the students wrote.

Printed in this section are the top 15,along with many of the other essayswe received. There was not room toprint all the essays we received, but

our plan is to publish all of them onthe Herald Web site at www.sidneyher-ald.com in the schools section undernews.

An important part of the CreativeKids section is the advertisements, justas it is in the newspaper. In this case, the ads were not designed on the com-puter by the Herald production staff, but instead were hand-drawn by fifth-and sixth-grade students from thearea.

Each sponsoring business was givena variety of advertisements designedby the students, with each business de-ciding the best ad representing its mes-sage. The chosen ad is the one printedin this section.

Students were encouraged to do theirhomework before drafting the ad. It isimportant to know the ins and outs ofthe business you are helping to pro-mote. The students educated them-selves about the businesses by viewingtheir ads in the newspaper, phonebook, special sections or by checking out thebusinesses’ Web site, a valuable lessonin marketing.

The Herald staff then selected thetop 15 advertisements from those selec-tions, with the top two receiving thefirst- and second-place awards.

Spend time and read what our chil-dren say makes their grandparent“grand.” Through these essays, ourcommunities can see what influencethe older generation has on our chil-dren and what influences them the

most.First-place advertisement winner

LaTasha Wieferich from Sidney MiddleSchool received a $100 savings bondfrom Wells Fargo; second-place ad win-ner Nick Larson, Sidney MiddleSchool, received a $50 savings bondfrom Stockman Bank.

For the essay winners, first-placewinner Hailey Steinbeisser, SidneyMiddle School, was awarded a $100 sav-ings bond from Edward Jones; secondplace Samantha Gangstad, Sidney Mid-dle School, received a $50 savings bondfrom Richland Federal Credit Union. All savings bonds were donated by thefinancial institutions.

Thank you to all the businesses in-volved and to the many teachers andstudents through Richland County fortheir continued support of this cre-ative project. The success of the Cre-ative Kids section each year is only be-cause of each of you.

My grandpa’s name is Joe Steinbeiss-er; he is an example of the best grandpato ever walk the planet. One thing I justlove about my grandpa is that when I’mhaving a horrible day he is able to makeme laugh some way, somehow. He al-ways has good advice for me too. He isalso willing to listen to any problems Ihave.

His hugs are very warming and when-ever I see him he grabs me and squeezesme as hard as he can. The hugs makeme feel like I’m important to him. MySteinbeisser part of the family has a lotof grandkids, and grandpa will make away so everyone is included in thegames we play. He made up one game.He sits in the chair, and we try not to getcaught by him. If one of us do, everyonehas to try and get them out.

When he laughs, it is like the wholeworld is laughing! He also loves to sing!In church I always sit by him, and Idon’t really like to sing. He puts thesong book in front of me and tells me to

sing so I do. There are little songs hesings when we are at his house; some ofthem make no sense at all. He makes hisown songs about everything. My Grand-pa also loves to go on bike rides with us.He comes down to our house in the sum-mer, and we go on little bike ridesaround the neighborhood. He loveshelping in the garden. He comes downsometimes and waters it, and he helpsclean it out sometimes too. My Momloves that!

My Grandpa also gives the best ticklemassages. They are so relaxing you lit-erally fall asleep laying there. Everytime he is sitting in his chair I lay onhis lap and he tickles my back. MyGrandpa also has a great sense of hu-mor. He always is scaring me when I’mnot ready for it. He is always having agreat time. Whenever one of us grand-children gets hurt, not -big time hurt,he tells us to go look in the mirror. Weend up not crying.

When I look at my grandpa I think

about when I grow up I want to be hap-py like him and just live life to thefullest. I don’t know what I would do if Ididn’t have my grandpa in my life. Mygrandpa is a lot of things: amazing, fun-ny, helpful, and many many more. Hehas kept strong since my dad died and Iam amazed by that. I love my grandpa. He is one of the most important peoplein my life.

My grandma Selma is grand because she is specialin a way that makes me happy. My grandma prettymuch does everything right. She’s like a pea in a podwith no one else there, but lately she isn’t because herhip is acting up.

Anyway, my grandma makes the best pumpkin pieduring Thanksgiving time. Sometimes she just makesthe inside of the pumpkin pie which is still reallygood. Also, at Thanksgiving she makes the best turkeyever. She is special because she is always happy nomatter what she does. I love my grandma so much.

I could talk to my grandma and you wouldn’t gettired of talking to her unless you were tired. Everyyear at Christmas she gives us all a fifty dollar bill be-cause she loves us all. She knows that every day wemake a good decision.

Sometimes she gets us different things. Last yearmy grandma got us an ornament with fifty dollars. Mygrandma has the healthiest heart in the whole worldbecause she has the most caring heart that will driveyou crazy. She was married, but her husband died. She still has everything he made. I think she is thekindest grandma because she keeps everything that

people buy or make. When I make the dumbest drawing ever she keeps it

with her. Last year when my family was coming toSidney, I drew a night sky with a moon and stars witha black background; she still has my picture on herfridge. Another time my mom made her somethingout of knitting that said “you are the best grandmaever.”

My grandpa is so cool that it will blowyour socks off. My grandpa lives in Boise,Idaho, and he is one of the coolest peopleI know.

The reason he is socool is that he alwaysmakes me laugh everytime I see him, he nev-er gets mad at me, andalways has a smile onhis face. He makes mefive eggs, 10 pieces of toast, and eightpieces of bacon. But, the coolest thing hedoes is make me wood swords. That iswhy he is the coolest man I know.

My grandma is the nicest person in thewhole city of Lambert. My grandma al-ways has a place for me to sleep at night. She feeds you so much food, you don’tknow what to do with it all. My grandmalets me watch anything I want to on TV.Sometimes, she will make me cookies, and they are the best. That is why mygrandma is the nicest person in thewhole city of Lambert.

What makes mygrandparents so grand?By Lars Kvaalen, Lambert

Have you ever wondered why grand-parents are called grand? Do you have agrandparent or even a great grandpar-ent? Do you have memories about yourgrandparents or great grandparents?

Well I have a lot of memories aboutmy great-grandma. She was born inGermany. Her name was Ingrid Maris-Mager. She lived through WWII (WorldWar II). The thing she should haveknown was that the Jews had died forno reason. She died thinking that theJews died because they were bad people. The reason she thought that was be-cause that is what Adolf Hitler said.

My great grandmother served Hitleruntil the war was over. Hitler told mygreat grandmother and all of thewomen that he needed more Nazis thatis why my grandfather was born. Hewould have become a Nazis. After thewar my grandfather and my greatgrandmother both fled to the U.S. Theydidn’t know if they could get arrested sothey ran and fled. Some people thoughtof her as bad or as evil as Hitler. She

was just misunderstood I think. She wastold the wrong things.

When I visited my great-grandmotherI didn’t think it was that fun becauseshe never had the TV going. All wecould do is talk. The things we talkedabout are very special to me now be-cause I don’t have her to talk to me. Shewas the person who taught me to speakwords in German. I now know that don-ishane means “thank you very much”and woundibar meaning “great or won-derful.” She was very forgetful; the only

thing she really could remember wasthe special occasions. She would alwayscall me on birthday. It was always reallyspecial to me because I would never getto see her when I wanted.

The funny thing about her was thatshe had the nicest butfunniest accent in theworld. It was a veryGerman accent, but ithad a tint of Englishaccent in it. I wouldtry to speak like herwhen I was little, andit never worked. She would just laugh. The other thing that I thought was fun-ny about her was that she was as shortas me, maybe even shorter.

The reason I think about my great-grandmother all the time was becauseshe was one of the only great-grandpar-ents I had or got to see when I went toMichigan. She was the sweetest butmost misunderstood person in theworld.

I love my grandparents. They aresome of the greatest people in my life. They are very grand. My grandparentsare grand because they are always thereto catch me when I fall. There love islike a campfire on the campground atnight.

I can always count on them if I needsomething or am having problems. They are also grand because they makethe best homemade tacos. They don’t al-

ways make the bestfood, but it is made bythe heart and not bythe mind. They alwaysask if I need anythinglike an ice cold icecream or something todrink like a sweet so-

da to eat or drink. They never thing about money, but

they will help out a person that doesn’thave very much just to help them out. They will help us out like when we hadto give our cool dog and lazy cat away.

They took them because no one else wasoffering. They always spoil me by hav-ing awesome snacks they can give tome. If they find something that theyknow that I will like, something withJeff Gordon, they will pick it up in aheartbeat.

They are always trying to make it tomy sporting events or my band concertswhenever there is one. I think mygrandparents are the best that everlived.

My great-grandpa, Wilmer Buxbaum,is the world’s best great-grandparent.He lives 15 miles south of Sidney. Heworks as hard as an Alabama cottonpicker; harder than any man I’ve everseen. He gets up awfully early so I can’teven see the sun on the horizon, to tendto his farm.

When he has time, he goes fishing. Heloves many things, from coffee in themorning to toothpicks, to fishing with

the younger chil-dren of the family.

One of my fa-vorite memorieswith my grandpa iswhile we were fish-ing. My cousinShane, my brotherand I were at theriver. I recall being

so upset with him, just because he tookone of my toads that I had caught whileI wasn’t watching my fishing pole andused it for bait.

When I think of him, I think of hishelpful attitude and witty character. Ithink of his petite clothing and grayhair. My great-grandpa is a man thatdoesn’t give up. You can tell by hisrough, hard-working hands. He onlywatches the weather and auctions onTV. My great-grandpa taught us to livewith what comes, and in the end, you’llbe proud of what you have achieved. Heis my hero, and I respect him. I believemy great-grandpa is the finest manalive.

The only time I have seen my grand-ma Gloria run was when she left herpurse in Walmart. I love the sprinklershower when I am working with mygrandma Betty in her garden. Everygrandparent loves and cares for you. Ilove making homemade noodles to-gether with my grandma Betty.

I also enjoy eating mini pizzas whilewatching QVC on Sat-urday with grandmaGloria and doingcrafts and sewingwith grandma Betty. Iwatch movies withthem. They are al-ways looking out for

me because they are full of wisdom. Ilove walking in the door and smellingbaked goods or mashed potatoes.

My grandpa used to pinch me when Iwas going down a slide, and say he wasa snapping turtle. I remember when Ifell asleep lying on the couch with mypapa. I miss both of my grandpas a lot.My grandmas give the best hugs in theworld!

That’s why my grandparents are sogrand!

Do you want to know what makes mygrandpa grand? Do you have an awesomegrandpa? Have you ever wondered ifsomeone did the same things with theirgrandpa as you do with yours?

I think that the reason grandparentsare grand because grandparents spoilyou and care for you greatly! Grandpar-ents can make a difference in your life.My grandpa makes a difference in mylife.

My grandpa’s nameis Dennis, and he wasborn in Plentywood in1947. When I wasyounger my grandpawas kind of like a dadto me because I neverreally knew my real

dad. My grandpa is really caring andnice. For example, every time I get an “A”on my report card I get $5. My grandpa ispretty supportive too when it comes toactivities I do.

Sometimes my grandpa will tell mehow the prices, clothes and rules used tobe. He has told me stories that his par-

ents told him. My grandpa has worked asa truck driver, on an oil rig, and on con-struction. My grandpa has taken me onbig road trips before. We have gone toWashington, California, Oregon, Idahoand North Dakota, all over Montana, Col-orado, Wyoming, South Dakota andmany more states. The longest we haveever been gone on the road is a fullmonth.

My grandpa and I love to watch profes-sional football, baseball and basketballtogether. We even enjoy watching NCAAfrom time to time. There is nothing bet-ter than going over to grandma andgrandpas’ house on a Sunday night towatch football with grandpa and eat hisfamous chili.

I have two grandparents that love mevery much, Judy and Bob. My grandpar-ents mean so much to me. Sometimes Idon’t always show that, but I wish I did. They’re always there for me when I needthem the most, No matter what I do, Iknow they’ll always love me.

Judy is my grandma. She is loving, caring, and kind. She’s also crazy andenergetic. Grandma Judy always has‘Judy Jokes’ as she calls them and she’lltell them to her best friends and tostrangers and anyone else she runs into. Most of them aren’t very funny unlessyour sense of humor is the same as hers, but she knows that and It doesn’t botherher. On any day of the week, you canfind my Grandma Judy helping me withmy piano or giving me rides to practiceor a friend’s house. A garden of Lovegrows in a Grandmother’s heart, -AuthorUnknown

Hardworking and caring are two

words that describe my Grandpa Bob.He is the most caring and hardworkingman I know. Do you know a Grandpa asdedicated to their grandkid that hewould give them a ride to and from

school every singleday? Well, my Grand-pa Bob does just that.He takes me to anysport event or activitythat I need a ride to.Not only does he helpme out with rides, but

he also helps my mom watch my littlebrothers when she’s having a hard timefinding a babysitter. He’s always work-ing around our house doing yard work, tinkering on cars, or anything else tohelp us out; I don’t think he ever takes abreak! A grandfather is someone with sil-ver in his hair and gold in his heart, -Au-thor Unknown

Grandpa Bob and Grandma Judy have

been married for 52 years. They have 5kids together, 28 grandchildren and 2great-grandchildren, They live in a littleblue house right up the highway fromme, which is just perfect because then Ican see them whenever I want to, Grand-pa and Grandma have a big back yardwith a shed full of treasures like nails, hammers, wood, and sea-clamps. My sib-lings and I used to make benches, shelves and all sorts of projects in theirback-yard, My grandparents also used tohave an old see-saw that we would al-ways play on, Another thing, my sisterAnna and I would always take turns rid-ing the old lawn mower around andaround the house, We would always playdress-up with Grandma Judy’s olddresses, hats, gloves, and shoes. I have somany memories at my grandparent’shouse and I plan on keeping them forev-er,

Everything my grandparents do for

me means so much to me. I could thankthem every day for the next hundredyears and it still wouldn’t be enough totell them how much I appreciate all ofthe love and support they give me.They’re very kind and I’m so thankful.Like I said earlier, I don’t always showmy appreciation, but I really do care. Ilove you grandma and grandpa! Grati-tude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others. -Author Un-known

A grandfather is someone with silverin his hair and gold in his heart. – Au-thor unknown

My grandparents are loving people.I’ll start off with my grandpa from mymother’s side of the family. My Grand-pa Gary and Wynona always show upfor all of their grandkids’birthdays. They always bringus great gifts! If they can’tmake It, thay send us heart-warming cards.

My Grandpa Gary is as sweetas candy. He is really good atmaking little antiques, like themini rifles he makes with woodand little pieces of pipes, Grandpa Garymade my siblings and I little cowboyboots with our names and dates ofbirths on them. I think that is reallyneat because it took him along time tomake them and he didn’t have to makethem, he chose to because he loves us.

He loves trains and collects mini onesas well. My family usually gets himtrains for his birthday.

Grandpa and Wynona have this cat –it somewhat resembles a buffalo In theeyes of my sisters and me. That cat, Imust say. does scare me whenever I go

to their house, but they considerhim as they’re kid, so we accepthim. My sisters and I alwaysend up running away from itwhen we go over there,

Nona always buys calendarsor pizza kits from me when I’mselling them for a fundraiser. She is very kind to me and is al-

ways willing to help me out, Nona alsogives the best hugs, When I was littlemy sisters and I would used to alwaysgo down in Grandpa’s basement andplay with all the toys he had downthere. He had this basketball boardgame and my sisters and I use to always

fight over who got to play who or whogot to play at all.

My grandpa is very important to meand is always there when I need some-where to go or when I need a ride.

Although my Grandpa Anker just re-cently passed away he is still foreverwith us. I remember the time he gaveme his hat when he was in the nursing

home and he told me to wear it on sun-ny days so I don’t bump my head. Ithink he kind of forgot that I have ahead full of hair unlike him, but it’sstill a good feeling to know that he did-n’t want me to get sun burnt.

Grandpa Anker was in World War II,I’m not quite sure what he did, but onething I do know is that he did it becausehe loved his country. He survived it andcame back to his family who were bliss-ful to see that he came home safe.

He use to come over all the time whenmy siblings and I were little and hewould push us around in our little, yel-low toy car, As he got older, and was putin a nursing home, we’d always go overthere and visit him and push himaround in his wheel chair for a change.

Grandpa Anker was a pretty crazyand wild fellow. If I could describe himin one word it would have to be self-gov-erning.

The radiance, the sheer awesomeness!Who could it be? My grandma.

To me she is all-knowing, all-powerfuland all-loving. She always looks out formy best interests. She looks like an an-gel, brightening the room, and filling itwith her bitter-sweet aroma. To many, she is just another old lady but not tome. Everything she makes is like a gift

from the almightyheavens. Every-thing she does is aswift, but agile won-der.

What would I giveto be a grandparent,to be loved andcalled “grand” or

“amazing” or even the occasional“Almighty King.” My grandma is myidol, the family’s idol (should be theworld’s idol...). She takes me in with awarm smile and caring arms. She lovesme so and comforts my woe.

The one who isn’t the best at every-thing, but is the best at all the rightthings. She is my grandma. She doesn’tcare if I lose, she doesn’t brag if I win,she only cares if I tried. The one thingthat annoys me about grandma, no mat-ter how you do something, she can al-ways do it better.

A grandma can never have too muchwisdom, only too little. They can neverbe too grand, great, or good. Every-thing, that is great, pure, and cool, ismy grandma.

My great grandma’s name is Jan Scott. She’s 5 feet tall, dark brown eyes andlight black hair. She is truly my realgrandma, but obviously we look nothingalike.

She is 78 years old but acts like she ismy mom’s age (34). My great-grandma isLebanese. Which is a different culture. She loves to cook and teach us her way ofcooking. The taste of her food is like ajourney in itself. I often wonder what itwould be like growing up eating

Lebanese food.One time the whole

family was going toher house for dinner. And my little sistersand I got to go overand hang out beforeeveryone got there. Iloved it because I got

to help her cook. We cooked for eight peo-ple. When my great-grandma cooks, sheuses gloves because she doesn’t like totough raw meat. She is so funny; she even

taught me a way to take them off withoutgetting anything on me.

She does have a serious side though.Disrespect is a big thing to her. That’swhy my sisters and I try not to do or sayanything that would upset or hurt her inanyway. Even my mom wouldn’t disre-spect her. That is one way we show ourlove for her.

My great-grandma also loves havingfun with us kids, we shop or just hangout. She buys things she knows we like; itmakes her feel good. It is fun being withher because she is truly a big kid herself. So, is your grandma as cool as mine?

When I see my grandma we usually havea grand time. My grandma always makesme happy whether I’m happy or sad. Mygrandma and I were just sitting at thecampsite, so I asked her if I could do herhair, she said, “sure.”

So we went in our camper and I straight-ened her hair. I wanted to embarrass herfor fun because people always walk by our

quiet campsite. I wentand got the ponytails, hairspray, and brush. Iput about 20 ponytailsin her; I spiked it up!Next we went outsideand my dog startedbarking at her because

he didn’t recognize her! We all took pic-tures of my grandma. We went and sataround the camp fire and roasted marsh-mallows. About five people walked by andstared at my grandma - like WOAH!!

We then went on a four wheeler ride andeveryone was laughing. We got back to thecamp site, and she made me take out thecolorful ponytails because she wanted to

go shower to get all the hairspray out. Herhair was as solid as a rock from all thathairspray!

I love my grandma so much becauseshe’s willing to do anything, and she is sofun to be around. Whenever I’m with hershe either makes me my favorite meal orlets me do embarrassing things to her, such as me doing her hair! The best mealthat she makes is chicken and rice! Whenmy grandma is almost done making chick-en and rice, we sit around the table andplay board games.

When it comes out, we put away theboard games and eat. After we eat, we goon walks around the neighborhood Mygrandma and I always have special memo-ries to remember.

The memories with my grandpa are justamazing. When I was younger, I would al-ways go to his house and stay the nightwhen it was time for bed. I remember himreading me a bed time story then I wouldalways fall asleep in his arms.

Then the next morning, I would go tochurch with grandma and grandpa. Afterchurch I loved going to their house andhave a big lunch. After lunch I would go

and sit by grandpa andwatch some TV. Whenev-er we got bored fromwatching TV, I would askif we could play a game ofhide-and- go seek. It wasso much fun playing hideand go seek with grand-

pa. Then of course we would get bored ofplaying that game, and then we got someboard games. Candy land was mine andgrandpa’s favorite game.

When our board game ended, we wouldalways go back up on the couch and laydown and just relax for a while. Then itwas time for dinner. My grandpa and Iwould go up to the kitchen and eat grand-

ma’s good food. Some more things grandpaand I did were go out to the garden andplant some plants. I loved helping grandpaplant plants.

My grandpa is also the football coach, soevery time Sidney had a home footballgame I would always make sure to cheerfor grandpa. At half time I would give hima high five or a hug, and if Sidney wontheir game, I would be so proud of grand-pa and those football players. As I got oldermy mom had my little sister so then I did-n’t spend so much time over at my grand-pa’s house. When my younger sister got alittle older, grandpa and her were startingto do the things grandpa and I did. I lovemy grandpa so much, and those memoriesare the best. I will never forget them.

My grandma is a very important per-son in my life. She is always there forme when I need her. She always takesthe time to listen to what I have to say.My grandma is one of the select fewpeople I can actually stand. Also, shedoesn’t judge me, but on the other hand, she doesn’t give me special treatment.

She tells me when I dosomething wrong, andshe supports me whenI try to fix it.

Grandma tells myfamily not to drink, dodrugs, anything bad.She tells us “boozers

are losers.” We laugh at her because itsounds funny when she says it. Grand-ma Shirley lets me stay at her housewhen I have nothing going on. Therewill always be a meal for me there too.

My grandma is amazing, if she wasn’tin my life I have no idea who I would be

today. She’s just done so many thingsthat I am grateful for. She brought mecloser to God also. My grandma is avery religious woman, and I look up toher for that. She takes everything intoconsideration. She may not agree witheverything I do, but at least she takesthe time to think about it. I love mygrandma. I am so glad that she is herefor me.

You may use big words to describe yourgrandparents; and yes, grandparents aregrand, all of them are. One of the thingsmy grandparents do is ask me if I’m hun-gry. And, I’m hungry a lot!

My Mom’s mom and dad are so awe-some. When I was young, my grandpa letme drive his John Deere tractor. Mygrandpa was in World War II and liberat-ed the survivors of the Bataan DeathMarch. My grandma makes the best foodin the world, and lets us do fun things.

At Thanksgiving every year, we get tomake something awesome like a cookietree or a ginger bread house. She doesn’tcare when we get frosting all over herbasement. This year, we’re hostingThanksgiving at our house, as my grand-ma has Alzheimer’s disease and can’tcook anymore. My aunt Laura and momare going to make gingerbread houses forus all to put together.

I met my dad’s mom and dad when Iwas in the fourth grade – they adoptedme as their new grandson then. They aretough people. My grandma is a welder for

Bobcat, and so is my grandpa. My grand-pa has beat cancer (Non-Hodgkins Lym-phoma), not once, but probably twice.Right now, he’s going throughchemotherapy and has lost all his hair.Despite this, my grandpa lent me his gun,so I could shoot a deer this year. I shotone near Fort Peck. Even though he’s go-ing through chemotherapy, he ground upthe deer I shot this year and made it intojerky.

My grandparents are tough, awesome, and that is why I’m so thankful.

My grandparents are wonderful to me.They come to all of my volleyball and bas-ketball games, and give me lots of support. The most things that I like about them arethat they like to have fun at whatever theyare doing. Most of all they love me, and Ilove them as much as they do me. “No cow-boy was ever faster on the draw than agrandparent pulling a baby picture out ofa wallet.” – Author Unknown

My grandparents are grand in so manyways. My grandma Gene and papa Gordyare so special to me because they love mesoo much and always make me happy.

Whether my grandma makes me one ofmy favorite meals or my grandpa takesme golfing I’m always happy to spendtime and goof ’ off with them. My grand-ma Gene makes the best chocolate sheetcake in the world! She makes a lot of RE-ALLY good food, but chocolate sheet cakeis my all-time favorite dessert. The moistchocolate cake is topped with a thin sheetof creamy chocolate frosting. This cake islike a piece of heaven! I always knowwhen she’s making it because her wholehouse fills up with a delicious chocolatearoma!

My grandpa Gordy grows the best cornand watermelon in their backyard gar-den. The corn is so much better than anystore-bought corn in the world! My fami-ly and I come over to eat at my grandmaand grandpas whenever the corn is ripe, though we go there many times. The cornis so sweet and juicy! But besides their

great cooking and corn growing, they arealways there to support and cheer me on.They try to make it to all of my sport andschool events. No matter how well I do,they both are so proud of me that I try myhardest.

They also “spoil me rotten” as they say.My grandma is always getting me newthings that I want. Though I love all ofthe nice things, all I really need is theirlove and support, and they give me that. This is why my grandparents, truly aregrand.

My Nana and Papa are cool, becausethey took me to Minnesota so my Papacould go to the V.A. hospital to get his hipchecked. His hips are not doing so well. But one thing, do not go to Minneapolisbecause they drive crazy!

Nana and I went to the Mall of Americaand went down this huge log rollercoast-er water ride! Once we got lost, so we hadto call the hotel so they could tell us howto get there.

My Nana and Papa also took me to He-lena once. Nana and Papa said that I wasexcited because I have friends that livethere. They live out in Jefferson Countytheir house is big and in their yard theythrow a toy for the dog and he runs out inthe yard and when he runs out there allthat jumps in the air is grasshoppers, andJordon and I went and played the Wii.

We went to the V.A. hospital so theycould do my Papa’s hip surgery. Nana andI stayed at the V.A. hotel there and it wasnice. A lady said that there were rattlesnakes by the door. We said if they’rethere, we are going to sleep out in the

truck. My Nana and I also took a trip to Mis-

soula to go see her sister there. Her sistertook us to the best rib restaurant in town! Then we went for a ride around town, and in the sky we saw a guy hang-gliding.Later we went to a store and got a co-conut. I was glad I got to see my Nana’ssister because she died just four monthslater.

Mmmm, I smell my grandma’s melt inyour mouth chocolate chip cookies. Ithink she makes the best chocolate chipcookies in the world!

She also makes the best mashed pota-toes with gravy too. They’re to die for.

She is so nice when it comes to Christ-mas. She lets me pick out whatever Iwant, but she tells me to forget what Ipicked out so it will be like a surprise. Mygrandma lives in the country. She lets mekeep some of my black horses at herhouse. When I go out there to see them, they run freely and swiftly across thehills, it’s so beautiful, and it makes mehappy to see that they’re free.

My grandma is so nice because since Ilove to bake and cook, she lets me helpher. One time we baked sweet potatoes forThanksgiving. It was confusing becausethey said mix certain ingredients in onebowl and mix the rest in the other.

She is so thoughtful too. She invites meto spend the night a lot. Whenever I dospend the night, we make the cheesiestmacaroni and cheese there is. Sometimes

in the morning I go over there and thereis either bacon or sausage sizzling on thepan. Whenever I go over to her house I al-ways go on the computer since she has in-ternet. She doesn’t even mind if I’m on itthe whole entire day. When I was sick lastweekend she put some of her specialchocolates (chocolates with caramel inthe inside) in a little baggie and sentthem to me. That was so thoughtful. Sheknows I love that kind. Sometimes I haveproblems with my dad (not bad ones) shereminds me that he loves me or he would-n’t be taking care of me. When she toldme that, I almost cried. I knew it wastrue too. It was so touching.

Sometimes I leave my MySpace pageopen because I forget to log out, and shedoesn’t go through it. She just logs out ofit for me, and I always thank her for it.She respects my privacy. My grandma isthe best grandma in the world! She lovesme to death and I love her back. Mygrandma’s like an angel from above.

There are many ways to describe yourgrandparents. I will tell you how mygrandma is grand.

One way my grandma is grand is she isalways worrying about us. Like one daywe were playing football outside, and Igot the wind knocked out of me. Shemade me stop playing for the day. Anoth-er way she is grand is she always makessure that she has snacks for us at herhouse. Like one time she told us thereweren’t any snacks at her house, so shetook us to Baker Boy to get our favoritedonuts.

Then, she always tries to be too nice. One way she is too nice is when I mowher lawn on our new driving lawn mow-er; She always over pays me. Their lawnis only about a 15 minute job and shepays me $15. She has a hair cutting busi-ness called Hair Plus. When my grandmacuts my hair, she makes it as shiny as astar. She cuts my hair for free. I alwaysinsist that I pay her, but she always says,“No, you keep it and spend it on some-thing you want.”

For our report cards she pays us $10for each A, $5 for each B (She is alwaystrying to give us money).

The final reason she is grand, is shelets us do pretty much anything. Whenwe first built our tree fort, it was in a treein a vacant lot, but our papa took it down. After that we built it in a tree above mygrandma’s house and she didn’t care. Ithink she thought it was pretty cool. Af-ter a while though, she told us not to gointo it. Sometimes we do because it is re-ally high in the air.

In conclusion, I believe that my grand-ma is an awesome and grand person.

Why do I love my grandparents? Thereason I love my grandparents is becausethey love me. Not only that but when myparents are gone, I stay at their house. The donuts that are freshly made by mygrandma are delicious. Helping mygrandpa with the lawn in summer andsnow in winter. The Christmas gifts I al-ways get from them. They love me and Ilove them.

When I was little I needed a ride, mygrandparents took me to church everySunday when my parents couldn’t go. Mygrandma crocheting toys for me when Iwas little and even making my sister’sprom dress is why my grandma is grand. My grandpa letting me wear his old mili-tary outfit for the Veteran’s Day paradewas a wonderful memory.

My grandparents love me and my sis-ters more than the light that the sunbrings. My grandparents spend most ofThanksgiving recalling on earlier timesof which only a few I have ever recalled.Remembering the times we would sitaround watching home movies in my

house and my grandma would recallwhat was happening and we would alllaugh. My grandparents are real jokers, just silly things like making a joke orpicking on someone nicely. My family isdefinitely weird but I have always said, being weird is not bad.

My grandmother is very nice. Shecooks and knits and as weird as it seemsshe even has a Facebook account. Mygrandfather on the other hand has neverused a computer but is very good at fixingcars. My great-grand mother is very niceand she loves to take care of me. Whenever I mow her lawn or rake for her shealways insists that I take ten dollars evenif I refuse.

My favorite meal that my grandmothermakes is SPAM noodle hot dish. It is, asyou can tell by the name, a delicious mixof spam and noodles. My grandfather hasa bad back so when I go to mow his lawnduring the summer he sits there andwatches me, telling me if I miss a spot.

I love my grandparents because theylove me even more every day.

Is spending Thanksgiving with yourgrandparents fun? For me it is because Idon’t always get to see them. Every Thanks-giving I spend it with my cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. There’s alwayslaughter and food so I call it a great time!Usually we just sit around and talk untilthe food is ready, but sometimes we allwatch television, or all of the kids go downstairs to watch movies or to play Call of Du-ty. This year me, my mom and my grandmaall sat at the table and just talked abouteverything. My grandpa on the other handwas watching the football game or some-thing.

I love spending Thanksgiving with them, mostly because their fun to talk to and somuch wiser than I am, so it’s fun to askthem questions about back when they werekids. They aren’t like usual old people Iknow, they’re like my best friends – kind oflike just people to depend on. They are likeold ninjas who have seen and know almosteverything!

It’s always a great time listening to mygrandpa talk about old stories and my

grandma going on and on about clothingprices and food prices going up. Then we allplay apples to apples and other fun boardgames. Last year for Thanksgiving we wentto my other grandmother’s house and all ofus were outside watching the guys ridearound on a thing called the odyssey. Theytook the hood of a pickup and tied it to theback of it and went sledding! Then theytook It and jumped off this hill with it.Even my grandpa took it for a spin.

My grandpa loves trains so he let me tryplaying with one of his collectable train setwhen I was younger. We spent almost thewhole afternoon playing with the train. He

taught me how to drive it and how to hookit up to the other parts of the train. Mygrandma always lets us play with her oldboard games when we go to their house. Mymom used to always take us to our grand-parents house after church so we would al-ways get a treat from them, usually theygave us ice cream and sometimes they evengave us pie! But we would always have to becareful because of their buffalo cat namedbobby. That cat is the devil cat. It evenchased me around the kitchen for a fewminutes before my grandpa saved me! Thatcat is so mean it wouldn’t even let me go tothe bathroom! But the cat is nice to mygrandparents so they like him.

My grandparents are awesome people. They’re always there for you when youneed them. Their dependable, great lovingpeople. I love them because their family, be-cause their hilarious people, they’re my he-roes, and they get me presents for my birth-day! Have you ever been on a trip with yourgrandparents? My first trip was with mygrandma, and we were going to Seattle. While we were sitting in the train stationwe said goodbye to my dad. My mom alsogot to come with us.

I asked my grandma if she had everbeen to Seattle. She said that she had nev-er but thought that it would be a very niceplace to visit. I also asked her why wewere going. She said that it was becauseher family was having a family reunion. My mom also told me that there were go-ing to be cousins from Norway there. Ithen asked if they would be able to speakEnglish. They both said that they shouldbe able to but they might just have a littlebit of an accent. Then in about an hour, the train got there.

The train ride was about 22 or 23 hourslong! The train stopped a few times to letpeople on and off the train. (sat with mymom and my grandma sat with my aunt.Once we stopped in Idaho and my momand (got off to just stretch a little. I was

afraid that the train might leave withoutus but my mom assured me that it wouldnot leave without us. When we got backon the train I fell asleep. Once we gotthere we were all very excited to get offthe train.

When we got to Seattle we went andchecked into the motel and then went toA Bite of Seattle in the park. There peo-ple had booths and were selling stuff. Atone shop you could get an airbrush tat-too. At another booth you could buy foodor a drink. After we ate we went to a bigfountain that kids could swim in or youcould just watch.

After the Bite of Seattle we walkedback to the motel and my sister got there. After my sister and her kids got un-packed and rested for a while we wentacross the street to eat at a hamburgerplace. My grandma thought that they hadthe best milkshakes and hamburgersever! I thought so too. In the morning wedrove to a ship dock We got to drive thecar onto the boat! It was really cool. The

ride was only about 10 minutes long oneway.

Once we got to my grandma’s cousin’shouse we started the reunion. Some peo-ple went on a raft or canoe ride. Then wegot to ride horse. Then we went back tothe motel and went to sleep.

We had to drive back to Everett to geton the train. We were there about an houror two early so we went to the mall. Wethen had about 30 minutes before the

train left so we had to go to the train sta-tion.

We had to wait at the train station fortwo and a half hours. My grandma and Iwere really mad and wanted to get goingso it was not so late when we got homethe next day. My mom went into the trainstation to figure out why the train wasnot there yet. They told her thatit was be-cause some cables had been broken. Wewere still very mad. But finally the traincame.

On the way home my grandma, mymom, and I played my grandma’s favoritecard game hand and foot. Then the trainbroke down again. It took us 25 to 26hours to get home. It was a long ride butvery fun because it was with my grand-ma.

I think my grandma is grand becauseshe will always be there for me no matterwhat. She also loves me very much. Mygrandma is also grand because shethinks it’s special to take her grandkidsand great-grandkids on trips with her.

She always goes some-where new in the U.S. likelast year it was Washing-ton, D.C., with my mom.Whenever I go to Billing tosee her she has somethingfor us to do. Like once wewent to a meeting with herand it was fun. They didn’tjust sit and talk they didstuff, like they had con-tests to see who couldmake up the best story.Whenever I come over forbreakfast we have cereal

or mini pancakes. I nevermet my grandpa. He diedbefore I was born.

My grandma and mygrandpa, from my dad’sside, they lived right nextto us. My grandpa hadarthritis and had half ofhis leg amputated. Mygrandpa was always wait-ing for us to get back fromschool so he could talk tous, and he was always find-ing new ways to annoy us.He would let us watch TVwhen we were there. Heliked to criticize our cook-ing especially if you messup the potatoes, you werein trouble. One time I wasin the tractor with my dadlistening to the tradingpost then grandpa’s voicecame on selling tractortires. The sad thing is that

he died at age 95. A weekbefore he died he got to seeour former foreign ex-change student we had be-fore I was born. In thesummer he got to go to thefamily reunion.

That is what makes mygrandparents so grand!

What makes my grandparents grandBy Autumn Rehbein, Lambert

What makes our grandparents sogrand? Well, I’m about to tell you. Mygrandma lives really close to my house, and I go over there all the time.

Just about every time I go over there, she has the world’s best cinnamon rolls. And, the best part about those cinna-mon rolls is that there is always like ahundred of them, so I can eat 50 andthere will still be enough for everybodyelse to have at least one, and I can stillhave like 20 more! She also always hasreally good dinners for me if she picksme up from basketball practice.

My other grandparents live in Califor-nia, so just going to go see them is prettygrand. The first night we get to theirhouse there is always a great supper. And they always have great stuffplanned. They’ve taken me to baseballgames, ice cream shops, great restau-rants, movies, and they have a pool attheir house so I can go swimming anytime I want.

All of my grandparents also come outto my house and help me do stuffaround our farm, and support me at oth-er events.

One thing my grandma always will dofor me is give me a birthday party. It isawesome, because she'll have me over toher house, make me dinner, make acake, and give me a gift. It is awesome. She also sometimes takes me out to din-ner on my birthday. So those are somethings that make my grandparentsgrand.

I love my grandparents. They are thebest people in the world to me. They arefantastic people. Their love is like a box ofchocolates on Valentine’s Day!

My grandparents are grand becausethey are always there for me, and they al-ways have a big smile for me. My grand-parents aren’t the greatest cooks, but theyhave the best taste in the world when itcomes to what children like to eat. Itseems like they can read minds like whenI got off from school, she’ll take us to Mc-Donald’s for blizzards or to Pizza Hut forsome great tasting pizza.

My grandparents are very caring. Theygive me way too much money or presentsfor Christmas. They spend way too muchmoney on my brother and I, and I feel likethey just love us so much they don’t careabout the money. They care about us.They are great to talk to because they’reolder and have more experience in life. They are great listeners and don’t askmany questions, and they always lookingon the bright side of things even whenthey’re not that great. My grandparentsare always willing to help and give.

With to my friends, she always offers aride or some food, and they give clothes, shoes and more stuff they don’t need topeople in need, or the Salvation Army! Mygrandparents love to eat. Every time I goto their house their cupboards are filledwith our favorite snacks and drinks.

As for sporting events, they never miss agame or match. They always are videoingmy games or telling people about it. So ifyou think you have “grand” grandparentsyou should come see mine!

Ahh, the smell of pumpkin pie sneaksout under the door into the entry way ofmy grandma’s house! Grandma must bemaking pie for my brothers and me.

My grandma always bakes pie for us.Her pie tastes like I won the lottery. Shemakes different pies for Marcus, Jor-dan, and me because we all like differ-ent kinds of pies. But grandma doesn’tcare as long as she is making us happy.

When she goes to Williston, she textsus and asks us what we want. She willget it for us. When it is my birthday, shewill get me something even if I didn’task her for it. She got me StrawberryFizz perfume when I didn’t have a cluewhat I wanted! And I love it! She givesme money if I don’t have any with me.She doesn’t even make me pay her back.

She likes to text me almost every dayasking how my day was and what I did.She asks me when my next basketballgame is so she can come support me. Ican always talk to her and know thatshe will help me with anything. Mygrandma doesn’t just do things for my

brothers and me, but she also goes andsees her other grand children. She does-n’t pick favorites, and she loves every-one the same. For Christmas she makessure she gets everyone presents anddoesn’t leave anybody out.

She always lets my aunts and unclesstay at her house when they are visitingfrom Billings, Colorado, Alaska, or Cali-fornia. My grandma is very loving andgrand because she loves my friends andmy friends love her too! She gives myfriends and me hugs when she sees us.

She also tells me that my friend Lexiis like another granddaughter to her, which shows me that she not only caresfor me, but she also cares for myfriends.

Once she let my friends come and eatpepperoni pizza with us at Pizza Houseand she paid for them too!

My grandma is so amazing and funny, that when I get her age I want to be justlike her. I love my grandma and I alwayswill.

Grandma Lola cares for my friends, tooBy Kortney Mayer, Sidney

My grandma is grand in many ways. When I see my grandma we have somespecial memories together. We also bringback special memories when we are to-gether. I don’t see her all that much butwhen I do we have a great time together.

The first memory I have with her that Iremember anyway, is I always use to fallasleep on her lap, smelling her sweet roseperfume and drifting asleep. After wemade her yummy melt in your mouthsugar cookies, they would literally meltin your mouth. When you smelled themyour mouth would just drool. I usuallyeat them all.

Also when I was at her house I wouldplay with her canes that had four legs. Iwould stand on it and try to walk aroundthe house on it, but I usually end up fellover like a falling tree! Afterwards, mygrandma would always come to see if Iwas OK. When we went over there forChristmas, she would open up her amaz-ing present that I got her. I would get im-patient because she opened it slow. Iwould open it up for her. I usually got her

an angel of some sort. Another memoryis that when we got to her tan house shewould always be in her luscious garden. Iwould go “help” her, but I would usuallyjust play in the dirt.

When we spent the night, she would al-ways love to braid or play with my hairbefore I went to bed. When she was donewith mine, I would brush hers. I will nev-er forget the special memories that wehave had together.

My family goes to my Grandma Car-ol’s house every Thanksgiving and letme tell you, she makes the best crescentrolls ever! There is always some kind ofsweet treat out there when we go.

She lives out on a farm and has cats, lots of cats. It’s crazy to know thatsomeone can stand all of those thingsrunning around! Yet, they’re still fun tosnuggle with or play with by pointinglasers and running them into walls. Idon’t think she knows that’s what mybrother and cousin do.

Because of the fact she lives on afarm, there is a lot of fun stuff to do outthere. The last time I was out there mycousins tied a hood from some old pick-up out on the farm to the back of a go-kart and was pulling each other aroundon it. They’re pretty crazy but they cansurely keep us entertained.

Her home makes me think of the Lit-tle House on the Prairie. Everyone outthere is always cracking jokes no mat-ter if they’re funny or not, but that’s al-right we still laugh at them anyways. I’dhave to say they’re a crazy bunch, but

that makes me love them even more.I don’t get to see my grandma very

much but that doesn’t change howmuch I love her! It’s always sad havingto give a hug goodbye, but then youstart to think about the next time we goback and those fresh crescent rolls popin your head and make you excited.
