A message from the CEO.
At Commonwealth Bank, communities are at the core of our vision:
to excel at securing and enhancing the fi nancial wellbeing of people,
businesses and communities. For over 100 years, Commonwealth
Bank has supported Australian communities, including the not-for-profi t
organisations that help to sustain and strengthen them. And today we
have ambitious goals to make our banking solutions and service for
our not-for-profi t customers deeper and better than ever before.
Since opening our doors in 1912, Commonwealth Bank has fulfi lled
a critical role in the lives of millions of Australians and communities –
from school children starting out with their fi rst savings account to
major institutions developing the nation. Ever since our earliest
employees raised funds to buy cots for orphans, we have been
inextricably linked with the communities we serve.
Our relationship with our community customers has above all focused
on enabling them to do what they do best. We listen. We think long
term, like they do. We understand there’s always more to be done.
We strive to understand what we can do better. We put customers
at the core of our innovations.
Just as we are proud of our history, we are optimistic about the future.
As the pace of change accelerates and the demands for innovation,
transparency and effi ciency increase, we believe we have the right
team, the right attitude, the right technology and the right values in
place to meet the unique fi nancial needs of our not-for-profi t customers.
We look forward to continuing our long-term support for a sector
that is so critical to the wellbeing of our communities.

Not-for-Profi t Sector Banking isn’t just something a few of us feel passionate about,
it’s in the DNA of our business. Our strength and stability rest in our culture of integrity
and commitment to supporting and enabling all our customers. Our vision is to excel at
securing and enhancing the fi nancial wellbeing of people, businesses and communities.
For today. For tomorrow. For communities. How we’re making a difference.
Our Staff Community Fund has been helping
young people since 1917. It’s Australia’s oldest
and largest workplace giving program, with
11,000 staff making regular contributions that are
matched dollar-for-dollar by the bank. In 2012,
the CommBank Staff Community Fund awarded
$2 million to organisations supporting the health
and wellbeing of Australian youth.
We are creating opportunities for Indigenous
Australians. Through our ‘Reconciliation Action
Plan’, we are creating social and economic
opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people through education, enterprise
support and appropriate banking services.
In the three years to 2012, we created 354
indigenous career opportunities.
We are contributing to a volunteering nation.
We encourage and support our people to
contribute their time and skills to the community
by offering volunteering opportunities with not-
for-profi t groups right across Australia. We’re one
of the few Australian businesses that offer staff
unlimited volunteering leave.
Total annual community contribution is
valued at just over $200 million, with a
commitment to invest an additional $10 million
per year over the next 10 years.
We care about the environment.
As one of Australia’s largest organisations, we are
keenly aware of the importance of managing our
environmental impact and reducing our carbon
footprint. We are investing in renewable and clean
energy projects. This is a long-term commitment
requiring signifi cant resources, knowledge and
skills. Over the last four years we have reduced
our greenhouse gas emissions by 34,550 tonnes
of carbon – a 20 per cent reduction.
We support people with disabilities.
Our Disability Action Plan is providing better
access to banking services for customers with
a disability. For example, we’ve provided ATM
screens featuring better contrast and larger fonts
and we help support people with disabilities to
prepare for employment through the Diversity
Support Mentoring Program.

We support schools. The Commonwealth
Bank Foundation Teaching Awards recognise
teachers who are working hard to build
students’ fi nancial literacy skills, while our
80-year-old School Banking Program helps
schools teach children saving habits that will
last a lifetime.
In line with our commitment to secure
and enhance the fi nancial wellbeing
of people, businesses and communities,
we provide the largest face-to-face
fi nancial literacy program in the world.
The Commonwealth Bank Foundation works
to improve the fi nancial literacy of young
people. Last year, the Foundation’s StartSmart
program helped 235,755 young people learn
how to manage their money. The StartSmart
program is offered free of charge to primary,
secondary and and vocational education
students across Australia.
We provide fi nancial literacy resources for
not-for-profi ts too. When you’re working for
a cause, every dollar counts. We’re committed
to providing a program of fi nancial literacy
resources for not-for-profi t organisations,
their staff and board members.

“As an independent school, our purpose, priorities and our decision-making structure are different to those of a business. From the outset, the team at CommBank took the time to understand this and have provided invaluable fi nancial, project and risk mitigation advice as we embark on an infrastructure project that will expand the school’s potential.”Dr Edward Groughan
