The principal objective of the Standard is to

provide users with nationally acceptable

unified rules for the design and detailing of

concrete structures and members, with or

without steel reinforcement or prestressing

tendons, based on the principles of structural

engineering mechanics. The secondary objective

is to provide performance criteria against

which the finished structure can be assessed for

compliance with the relevant design

requirements.

The objectives of AS 5100 series are to

provide nationally acceptable requirements for:

I. the design of road, rail, pedestrian and

bicycle-path bridges;

II. the specific application of concrete, steel

and composite construction, which embody

principles that may be applied to other

materials in association with relevant

Standards; and

III. the assessment of the load capacity of

existing bridges.
