Dear Parents,

Crestwood Primary and Crestwood Intermediate participated together in Pinwheels

for Peace on International Peace Day, September 21, 2010. The students at the Pri-

mary and Intermediate schools prepared for this event by reading, writing, singing,

and creating artwork about peace. During the event the students planted student cre-

ated Pinwheels with messages of peace around the building. Each primary student

made a peace bookmark to exchange with an Intermediate student.

School Wide October Events

We had a practice safety lockdown on October 1st to prepare what each person should

do if an intruder enters the building. The Portage County Sheriff assisted us in check-

ing each of the classrooms to make sure that every room was secure.

A big thank you to the Mantua Fire Department for coming to Crestwood Primary to

instruct the students on fire safety issues throughout the month of October. The chil-

dren were given instructions on fire safety, as well as an opportunity to see a fire truck

and an ambulance. . You may want to review your family fire procedure for home

during October.

Preschool

The preschoolers have been learning about community helpers. The children ex-

plored different types of community workers. All the preschoolers learned about fire

safety which included a lesson on stop, drop and roll. The preschoolers identified the

signs of Fall. Please look at the boney bulletin board made by our preschoolers.

Kindergarten

We have been very busy at Crestwood Primary School during the month of October.

Our kindergarten students visited Monroe Apple Orchard to explore the apple grow-

ing process. The children also made applesauce and completed many graphing activi-

ties with apples. The kindergarteners continue to work on listening and following

directions.

First Grade

The first graders welcomed grandparents into our school throughout the month of

October. Each child completed special activities with his/her grandparent during the

half hour program. The first graders are also working on becoming strong readers by

retelling story events and sequencing stories. Please practice each night reading with

your child.

Second Grade

Our second grade students are the leaders in our building. The second graders help to say The Pledge of

Allegiance each morning for our announcements. The second graders are also expected to be role models

for the younger students in our school. All the second graders have been reading independently and an-

swering comprehension questions using Reading Counts.

Staff Spotlight

Miss Natalie Harr found out this month she will have an article published called, "Nature Detectives"

which will be published in the November issue of NSTA's Science and Children magazine. The article de-

October Classroom Guidance Lessons

During the month of October students at Crestwood Primary received 2 lessons on bully pre-vention. Students were taught what a bully is, how to deal with a bully and who they can tell. At this age children are still learning right from wrong and how to make good choices. We understand that at times a child may make a poor choice this does not make them a bully but, it also does not excuse the behavior. Last month students learned about friendship. All the staff at Crestwood Primary stress the importance of making good choices and being friends. Listed below are some of the books that were read to students to help them understand bullying.

playground equipment.

Pizza Party Incentive for Upcoming 4C Food Drive

PTO will be having a food drive to benefit the local 4C's Food Cup-

board. This will take place the week of November 15-19. There will be a

contest to see which classroom in each grade can collect the most items. The

winning class from each grade will have a pizza party in their class-

room on Friday of that week. Boxes will be placed outside each classroom

to place the items in. Some good ideas to bring in would be peanut butter,

macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, etc. Any non-

perishable food items or paper products are needed to help

stock the cupboard for the upcoming holiday season.

The PTO would like to thank all parents and students for a fantastic candy bar

MMMMMMM Applesauce. Mrs. Brug-

mann's kindergarten class made apple-

sauce in their classroom and ate it at the

end of the day. The kindergarteners

made their own applesauce recipe book.

"Students in Miss Lacko's class enjoyed making some yummy ap-

plesauce!"

Apples never tasted so good. The kindergar-ten students at Crestwood Primary school vis-ited The Monroe Family's Pioneer Trail Apple Orchard. Pictured are Mrs. Brugmann's stu-dents biting into their fresh juicy apples.
