Last chance to see A4 giants!
The Dominion of Canada and Dwight D Eisenhower, sister engines of the leg-endary Mallard, which recently featured in the Great Goodbye Event at Locomotion; the National Railway Museum at Shildon, are soon to leave the UK forever. Bank Holiday Monday, 21st April, is the very last chance to see the two engines before they return to their home museums in the USA and Canada.
However, the Crier’s DVD of the Great Goodbye event, featuring over 140 photos of all six of the A4 locomotives, is still avail-able for just £5 from our offices, upstairs in the Town Council building, Civic Hall Square, Shildon. We can also send you a copy through the post for £6.50. Call 01388 775896 for details. We also have a selection of photographs available from just £2. Call into the office to take a look.

The Mayor of Shildon, Councillor Peter Quinn, along with his consort Shirley, held his final en-gagement as Mayor on Thursday 10th April at the Civic Hall.
The evening was a Quiz Night with a sausage and chips supper, plus a raffle. All proceeds from the event will be added to the Mayor’s funds, which will then be divided equally
between his chosen chari-ties; The British Legion and Children’s Cancer. The evening raised £623 which will bring his total funds raised to around £2,000.He commented, “I am de-lighted with the turn-out at my final fundraising event, and was especially honoured that 12 other Town Mayors from the area found the time to come along and support me.“During my year in office it has been an honour and a privilege to serve the people of the town and I would like to thank everyone who has sup-ported me during my term as mayor.”Peter hands over the reins to a new mayor on 12th May.
Mayor says final farewell at Quiz Night fundraiser
Please noteDue to the Bank Holiday weekend, next week’s issue of The Crier (Issue 661) will be printed a day later than usual and will be distributed to deliverers on Friday 25th April.

Since the beginning of April there have been four sneak-in burglaries in the town. Two have occurred on Coronation Avenue, one on Ruby Street and the other on St John’s Road. Police investigations are still ongoing and arrests have
been made. “In the meantime can we urge everyone to be vigilant and remember to lock doors, particularly on a night time,” said a police spokesperson. If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neigh-bourhood call 101.
“When the coalition gov-ernment started to talk about the big society, they should have come to Shildon first to learn first-hand how it works,” says Reverend David of St John’s Church. “People caring about their community has been a feature of Shildon life for as long as anyone can remember.“At Saint John’s Church we are so fortunate to have people who, motivated by their love of others, spend years working voluntarily to make things better. “On Sunday 13th April we had a chance to say thank you to one of those vol-unteers who over the last
six years has been ‘church warden’ at the Church.”Being church warden means that you are responsible for the building and, in the absence of a minister, for the services too. Pat Todd of Main Street, Shildon, became church warden six years ago, kindly staying a year longer than her term to help with the change of vicars. Working tirelessly with her fellow Warden Barbara Hall, who stepped down last year, and Neil Cleasby who was appointed in 2013, Pat has overseen the care and maintenance of the beautiful building.Saint John’s relies on do-
nations to keep the doors open. With the numbers of weddings and baptisms booming, Pat worked hard to ensure a bright friendly church in a good state of repair greeted everyone who came in. After the Sunday morning service, Pat, who also sings in the choir and does admin tasks, was presented by Revd David with a bouquet and a gift to say thank you. “It is,” continued Revd. David, “only a small token for a lady with a big heart, but we are so grateful Pat for all you have done, and indeed continue to do, to see our community flourish – thank you.”
At a Charity Show held at at the Civic Hall on Friday 11th April, the four local theatre groups, Tykes, CATS, The Tearaways and Centre Stage, raised £579 for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
“We wish to sincerely thank all the young people and adults who took part in the two and a half hour show, and all those who helped make the evening a success,” commented a spokesperson.

Approximately 11pm on Friday 11th April, a male attempted to break into garages at Larch Avenue on the Jubilee Estate. However, an alarm was activated from one garage
which scared the perpetra-tor off. If anyone saw anyone acting suspiciously around this time they are urged to contact Shildon Police on 101.

Residents, staff and guests at Holly Lodge Care Home on Maddison Street had a fantastic time at their recent coffee morning. Everyone enjoyed cake
and a cuppa, a cake stall, tombola stall and a Body Shop stall.“We would like to thank all the local people who attended and supported
us, also everyone who baked cakes and donated to help us in raising £120, which will be donated to our residents’ fund,” said a spokesperson.

£300, from Talk Talk, that between January 2013 and May 2013 he stole various items of electronic equip-ment, valued at £2,000 from Talk Talk, and that on 2nd May 2013 he stole a shopping trolley from Mor-rison’s in Shildon.

Police are to work along-side parking enforcement officers after several complaints were made at last month’s Byerley PACT meeting regarding parking around Timothy Hackworth Primary School.Residents are very con-cerned with the issue of illegal parking, mainly around school collection and drop-off times. A spokesperson for Shildon police commented, “We
take these complaints seri-ously because parking re-strictions are put in place to avoid any kind of accident or injury from taking place, particularly when a high number of young children congregate in one place.“After the Easter break the police will work jointly with civil parking enforcement officers to commence a robust period of penalising motorists who park ille-gally.”
Shildon Salvation Army on Cross Street is holding an Easter Sale on Saturday 19th April, from 10am to
12 noon.Various stalls and refresh-ments will be available and admission is free.
Thomas William Boddy was not represented when he appeared before the District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court recently, and it was he who advised the defendant to seek out a lawyer. The 47 year-old, of Almond Court, Shildon, faces charges that, on 9th March, he drove a Peugeot Partner Van on the A6072 at Heigh-ington whilst over the legal
limit of alcohol, and that he drove without due care and attention. Matters were adjourned until 23rd April and the Probation Service was re-quested to prepare a pre-sentence report. “As you have a previous conviction for drink driving, it is in your own interests to have represen-tation,” the judge advised the defendant.

Improvements will include a newly refurbished
branch, providing a modern open plan environment and longer opening hours. The branch will close for refurbishments on Saturday 10th May at 12.30pm, and
will re-open on Monday 19th May at 1pm.Customers are encouraged to use Shildon Post Office on Redworth Road during the closure.

Shildon Running Club’s Stadium 2000 once again provided the venue for the annual Anne Marie Readshaw Memorial Open Track & Field meeting on Sunday 13th April. Many of the club’s athletes began their track season in a competition with a record of over 400
entrants. Further afield the London Marathon was also underway and congratula-tions go to Irene Ross and Eddie Murphy who took part. Irene was attempting her 1st run over the 26.2m course and finished in 6h 34m while Eddie ran an
excellent 3hr 50.44s. Also completing the gruelling 26.2m distance of late, but in Blackpool, were Gareth Shaw (4hr 13m) and Phil Crow (4hr26m). David Beadle participated in the ‘non-event’ in Shef-field where he completed the course anyway in 1hr 46m.
Shildon Railway Cricket Club will be playing in the Readers Durham Cricket League Division 2 this summer for the first and last time, as the club will join the North Yorkshire and South Durham League next season. The club will miss promi-nent batsman Martin Ferguson, who, due to a shoulder injury and work commitments, is unlikely to feature in many games. However, Martin hasn’t forgotten his team mates and his firm MJF Cleaning Services, based in Darling-ton, have struck a generous shirt sponsorship deal with the club. “The shirts, bearing the MJF logo, are available in
a range of sizes and both senior sides and our four junior teams will certainly look smart when they take the field,” said the de-lighted club chairman John Brennan. “Our F15 team, Shildon Locos, (the boys in pink) also has a shirt sponsor in Middleton Road Garage, who have very generously sponsored us for several seasons and we are looking for further sponsors to come on board, as this season our running costs will increase, as we have four junior sides compet-ing,” added the chairman.Anyone interested in spon-soring the club can contact John on 01388 777184 or 07890154889.

Shildon AFC play the final of the Durham Challenge Cup at Billingham Syn-thonia’s ground on Friday 18th April, against league leaders Spennymoor Town. This will be the Railway-men’s first final since 2007-2008, when they
lost in the League Cup. The League Cup is also the last trophy Shildon won, which was in the 2002-2003 season. Kick-off is 10.45am.Their final two games of the season are both away. On Monday 21st April
they travel to neighbours Newton Aycliffe, with a 6pm kick-off, then on Saturday 26th April they are at Dunston UTS. If Shildon manage to win both these games they will probably finish 2nd in the league.
