Timeline of Events

• March 16; between 1-2:30 AM– Steve Smith escapes from minimum security

prison where he was serving time for a felony drug offense.

– Goes to the home of his former girlfriend (Megan Jones) where she lives with her eight year old son Eric.

– Steve has access to Megan’s personal computer from March 16 through march 19.

• 5AM: Police question Megan about Steve and she says she has not seen him or heard from him.

• 3:30 PM: Police again question Megan about Steve. Megan again says she has not had any contact with him.

March 18

• Steve is filmed on a surveillance camera at Ace Hardwar. Receipts show that he purchased a lighter and some lighter fluid.

• Between 1-4 PM: House of Keith Ramsey was burglarized. Nobody was home at the time of the burglary. (On the same block as Megan Jones’ house)– Item stolen

• 38 caliber revolver• Jewelry • $60 cash

• A garden shed in the back yard of Keith Ramsey’s house was set on fire.

• A neighbor noticed the smoke and called 911 at 2:38 pm.

• By the time the fire department arrived the shed was destroyed.

• The fire marshal determined that the fire was set intentionally with the use of some sort of chemical.

March 18• Store surveillance camera at Wal-Mart and

store receipts confirm that Steve purchased the following items at 6:26 PM. The cameras show that Eric is with Steve.– 38 caliber ammunition (1 box)– Metal file– Computer disks (box of 6)– Bottle of coke– Snickers bar

March 19 (Surveillance cameras and witness testimony confirm)

• 2:14 PM: Steve and Eric pull up to “Casey’s” gas station in Megan’s car.

• After a brief discussion, Steve enters store and Eric waits by the side of the store.

• 2:17-2:19 Steve walks around the snack isles.• 2:19: Eric enters store crying and yelling that he is lost.• Store cashier leaves security pod to assist Eric.• Tamara, another customer, whose is 8 months pregnant

also offers assistance.

• 2:19: Steve walks up behind the cashier with a revolver and orders him to go back to the pod and get the cash. He orders Tamara to lay on the ground

• Tamara begins to scream hysterically• Eric stops crying as soon as Steve pulls out the

gun.

• 2:20: Cashier pushes a silent alarm as he is getting the money.

• Steve screams at Tamara to “Shut up”.

• Steve takes the cash and hits cashier with the butt of the revolver.

• 2:21: Steve again screams at Tamara to “Shut up”. When she doesn’t comply he repeatedly kicks her in the head, chest, stomach, and back.

• 2:22: Steve and Eric leave “Casey’s” with $2,648 cash and drive away in Megan’s car.

• As Steve is driving away he fires a shot into the air.

March 19

• 2:24: Police and paramedics arrive at “Casey’s”• The cashier is treated at the scene.• Tamara was taken to the hospital where she

went into a trauma induced labor. She delivered her child who was born with severe brain damage. Doctors believe the brain damage was caused by her assault.

• 2:28: After a short chase police box Steve in and tell him to get out of the car. Steve points his gun at the police and tells them to move. 2:30 After a short standoff Steve throws down his gun and surrenders to police.

• The gun is the 38 caliber revolver stolen from the neighbors house on March 18. The serial number was partially filed away.

• A search of the car uncovers a lighter and lighter fluid and $2,648 in cash.

March 19

• 2:50 Steve says that he has been hiding in the basement of Megan Jones’ house since the morning of March 16.

• 4:50: Police obtain a search warrant for Megan Jones’ house and find the following items in the basement:– Jewelry stolen from neighbors house– Metal file– Half empty box of ammunition

• 5:00: During a search of Megan Jones’ personal computer 32 images of child pornography were discovered.

• All of the images were downloaded between the dates of March 17 and March 18.

• When Eric Jones was questioned by police about his involvement in the robbery of Casey’s, Eric said that Steve told him that if he helped distract the clerk, Steve would buy him new toys.
