HOLIDAY CRIME PREVENTION

DARREN DATTALO, CRIME WATCH COORDINATOR

1. That pile of presents under the tree looks awfully good to anyone that might wander up on your porch. Keep them out of sight from outside the house.

2.Keepmailslotsandmailboxesfromoverflowing,indicatingthat you’re out of town. Also think about newspapers and package deliveries while you’re traveling.

3. At the mall, beware of purse snatchers and those who would break into a car full of packages.

4 Be careful about disposing of packaging after the gifts are open. No need to announce to the world that you got a new 60” TV by leaving the box at the curb. Break it down before recycling.

5. And remember that charity scams run amok this time of year. Do your homework on an organization before donating.

Video systems are exploding in popularity among homeowners. A system that used to be cost effective for the business community is now easier to install and becoming more common in residences than businesses. Installing a home security system used to mean spending hundreds of dollars to have professionals come and hardwire your house, signing a long-term contract, and then paying monthly fees in order to keep the thing running. Systems weren’t flexible, andfalsealarmswerefrequent.

Times have changed. A smart new wave of home security systems has changed the way we think about protecting our homes. These new systems are built around plug-and-play, DIY-friendly devices, and sensors that work with your smartphone, move when you need them to, and put you in control of how you protect your home. Best of all, these systems come with no contracts, and in many cases, no monthly fees -- meaning that peace of mind is more affordable than ever.

As an example, and only as an example (not an endorsement), is the“Ring”systemofdoorbellsandflood lights. These typesofsystems are prevalent in your neighborhood. As with any wireless system that relies on your home Wi-Fi, remember that should your signal become degraded or a power interruption occur, the system may not function as you intended. Backup power supplies and internet reliability should be factored into the decision process.

Some of the items to consider if you choose to go the DIY route: Generally a 1-ghz system or stronger should be able to keep constant contact with its sensor components for most single family

homes.Mosthomesshoulddofinewitha1-ghzreceiver. Generally a system that supports a variety of different sensor and detector options is a good choice. Thatwayyoucanaddontothesystemasyouseefit, andfurtherimprove the overall safety and security of your home.

While you might not want to have a motion detector in every room in your house (especially if you have pets), you likely will want to have at least one or two in areas where some of your most valuable itemsarekeptsuchasthemasterbedroomoroffice.Itisdefinitelywise to invest in a setup that has a good battery backup system that will continue to protect you and your home in the event of a power outage or attempt at circumvention by a home intruder.

Also, you will want to consider the pros/cons of hiring a professional service to monitor your home’s security system as not all wireless systems will support such monitoring.

The Dallas Police Department has been fortunate to have received many valuable video clips from neighborhoods that have led to the arrest of criminals. One of the challenges continues to be the placement of the camera(s). In too many instances the video quality isgood, but the imagecaptured isnotasamuchvalueas it could be. This specifically applies to outdoor, non-doorbellplacements.

Area resident Cindy Obermeyer tells us about her experiences and gives us information about an opportunity to help, not only during the holidays, but also at any time of the year.

If you are interested in helping refugee families that have been resettled in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, one organization you can work with is DFW International Community Alliance dfwinternational.org/Refugees. I would encourage you to get on their e-mail list as that will enable you to learn areas where you can help.

I have recently assisted them by hosting a drive to collect hygiene items and cleaning products, as these are not covered by food stamps. I have also assisted with providing food and/or gift cards to grocery stores as it can take several months for newly settled families to receive their food stamps. There are also Go Fund Me pages for refugees that have medical issues.

Perhaps you would be interested in visiting a new family and collecting some used clothing, toys, or household goods for them from your friends. When they arrive, they have nothing, and they are grateful for any donated items they receive.

In early 2017 my husband and I “adopted” a young Afghan couple expecting their first baby.We collected kitchenandbaby items from neighbors to help them set up their apartment, and we helped the father who had a degree in computer science from an Afghani University get a laptop and software so he could learn additional programming languages.

He studied those the first year while he worked various lowwage jobs. He then landed a job with a multinational consulting and technology services corporation. The company has since relocated them to the Baltimore area. With just a little bit of assistance this family is an assimilated success story.

There are also opportunities to help kids with school supplies, clothing, and back packs. If you get on their e-mail list you will learn all the ways you can help. DFW International is a 501(c)(3) so your kindness and generosity will be tax-deductible. Send an e-mail to [email protected] to get added to their e-mail distribution list,

HOLIDAY MEET & GREET

SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS IN SCHOOL ZONES

The City of Dallas has provided a check-list of suggestions for driving safely in our streets around schools. We have two elementary school zones within LGNA’s area. The tips make sense, so take a look.

With children back in school, we at the City of Dallas wanted to share these safety reminders with you. Please take a minute toreadthesefivesafetytipsfordrivers.

1. Watch your speed in school zones! Be aware that school zone speed limits may vary in hours and speeds. Be sure to follow the posted limits.

2. Slow down in residential areas. Watch for children crossing the street and congregating near bus stops.

3. Do not pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.Trafficinbothdirectionsonundividedhighways must stop when students are entering or exiting a school bus.(Theredflashinglightsandextendedstopsignarms areyourcuetostop.)Onadividedroadway, alltraffic behind the school bus must stop.

4. Be alert! The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. Children walking to and from their bus are usually very comfortable with their surroundings and more likely to take risks, ignore hazards, or fail to look both ways when crossing the street.

5. Always stop when directed to do so by a school patrol sign, schoolpatrolofficer, ordesignatedcrossingguard.

Holiday season may be the Hap, Hap, Happiest Time of the Year, but it’s also prime time for criminals. Here are a few tips so the Grinch doesn’t steal your Christmas:

Page 2: CRIME WATCH UPDATE LGNA - WordPress.com...While you might not want to have a motion detector in every room in your house (especially if you have pets), you likely will want to have

FIRE STATION BASKETS / TOYS FOR COPSAgain this year, we’ll be collecting gently used stuffed toys for the Dallas Police Department. DPD officers keep stuffed toysin their patrol cars to give to frightened children involved in domestic violence calls or car accidents. This is a great oppor-tunity to participate in a compassionate effort while removing some of the clutter from your home. Because neighbors have asked us about providing other small toys, we’ll also accept puzzles, books, and board games for Jubilee Center.

For our collection in July, generous neighbors provided 350 stuffed toys as well as 80 nursery toys, children’s books, and puzzles for Jubilee Center. Thank you!

Despite our generosity, however, DPD’s Central Patrol still needs our donations. LGNA is the only organized toy-collection effort in Central Patrol, and officers distribute well over 500 stuffed toys per year.

Saturday, December 15 – Bring your toys and holiday goody donations to 5843 Vanderbilt between noon and 5:00pm, and we’ll deliver them to Central Patrol and the fire station. If you’re unable to come by on Saturday, a box will be on the porch for toys and non-perishable fire station donations on December 12-14.

Here’s the dirt on home maintenanceFalling leaves and falling temps mean time for fall maintenance. Don’t be like me and wait til it’s freezing outside to wrap your pipes. Here’s a checklist of things to check inside and out to get your home in tip-top shape for winter:

✔ Clear gutters and downspouts.

✔ Trim dead leaves and branches.

✔ Fall is an opportune time for exterior house painting as humidity is lower.

✔ Checkyourroofforwearandtearandflashing around skylights, chimneys, pipes.

✔ Install screen behind any gable or foundation vents to keep critters out.

✔ Wrap outside exposed pipes with heating tape.

✔ Havewood-burningfireplacesinspectedandcleaned.

✔ Weatherstrip doors and windows and repair caulking around drafty doors and windows.

✔ Check attic for proper insulation.

✔ CleanorreplaceHVACfilters.

✔ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Be safe if doing these projects yourself! When using a ladder, place on firm,drysurface,wearslipresistantshoes,alwayskeep3-pointcontacton ladder, don’t stand higher than the 3rd rung from the top, don’t overreach, avoid overhead power lines, and put your cell phone in your pocket just in case.

Do you have major repairs and need assistance? The City of Dallas Housing Improvement Preservation Program might be the answer. Call 214-670-3644 or check DallasCityHall.com – the City of Dallas website.

Another option might be Rebuilding Together North Texas. They restore hope and revitalize neighborhoods by bringing volunteers and communities together to repair homes and lives of low-income homeowners. See RebuildingTogetherNTX.org for information on services, to complete an application, or to volunteer.

Once you’ve got your house projects complete, have a safe and warm holiday season. Dig This will return in 2019 with more dirt on gardening, neighborhood improvement, and outdoor living.

Despite Tietze pool construction and threats of rain, National Night Out in Tietze Park was a success on October 2. Around 800 neighbors attended to meet with each other and with over 45 exhibitors.

Thanks for generous support from businesses like Matt’s Rancho Martinez (hot dogs and buns), 7-Eleven (ice), and Coca-Cola (soft drinks and water), and thanks to Boy Scout Troop 245 for help with hot dogs and bounce houses as well astoBoyScoutTroop42fortheinspirationalflagceremony.

INTERFAITH EXPANSION

You’ve probably noticed the construction at Matilda and Ross. Interfaith Family Services has been around for 32 years and in their location on Ross since 1988. Thanks to generous community support, the organization is expanding. Interfaith helps families in crisis to break the cycle of poverty, and their marketing director Gino Johnson provided the following update.

In May of 2019, we will open the doors to our new Family Empowerment Center. The new center will allow us to triple our impact over the next three years. While we will continue to offer our transitional housing program, we will also provide career coaching,financialcoaching,counseling,andon-sitechildcarefor children ages 0-18 for those who do not reside with us.

As a result, we will increase our capacity from serving 100 families annually to up to 300 families. Interfaith will be the only full-service family center of its kind in Dallas serving both parents and children simultaneously.

ThefirstflooroftheAdultEducationFacilitywillbehometoournew career services center and computer lab, which will be twice the sizeofourexisting lab.Our successcoachingoffices

and chapel are also located on this floor. The second floor is our “lifestyle management floor” with a professional clothingcloset, food pantry, demo-kitchen for cooking classes, and an exercise room.

Our Childcare and Youth Services Center will house an extended-hours childcare center on the first floor. The K-6thafter-school program, kitchen, and dining room are on second floorand the teenprogram, children’scomputer lab, children’scounseling center, and sick-care room are on the third floor. This holistic combination is especially beneficial for the singlemothers we serve.

Our third-floor will house fifteen financial coaching suites and two training rooms for larger classes. Our hope is not only will the lives of the families we serve be transformed, but that our methodology to addressing poverty cause private and public sector change so that all Dallas families can be empowered to liveself-sufficientlives.

Page 4: CRIME WATCH UPDATE LGNA - WordPress.com...While you might not want to have a motion detector in every room in your house (especially if you have pets), you likely will want to have

SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS IN SCHOOL ZONES

The City of Dallas has provided a check-list of suggestions for driving safely in our streets around schools. We have two elementary school zones within LGNA’s area. The tips make sense, so take a look.
