Allison Dellandrea Crown Counsel - Crown Law Office, Criminal Education Coordinator – Ontario Provincial Strategy to Combat Internet Crimes Against Children

Allison Dellandrea is the Lead Education Crown for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General’s Provincial Strategy on Internet Child Exploitation offences. Allison regularly delivers training across Canada to law enforcement, counsel, and the judiciary on emergent legal issues arising from technology-facilitated offences. Allison also prosecutes a variety of cases on behalf of the Ontario Crown at both the trial and appellate level. Ms. Dellandrea is a member of the Crown Law Office –Criminal Search Team, Interpol’s Experts Group on Internet Crimes Against Children, and the International Association of Prosecutors’ Cybercrime Group. Allison is the Director of the Ontario Crown Attorney’s Association Summer School program, as well as the Internet Child Exploitation Course. In 2015, Allison was named by Canadian Lawyer magazine among the “Top 25” Lawyers in Canada, in the ‘Changemaker’ category, for her work as a specialist in the prosecution of high-tech child abuse cases. Allison is a graduate of McGill University, and Dalhousie Law School. She was called to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1998.

Breese Davies received her B.A., M.A. (Criminology) and LL.B. degrees from the University of Toronto. She practices criminal law at both the trial and appellate levels. She started her legal career as an associate with Ruby & Edwardh and was a partner at Di Luca Copeland Davies LLP for 4 years. Breese now has her own firm in Toronto and she practices in association with Cavalluzzo Shilton McIntyre Cornish LLP.

Breese was involved in the Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in relation to Maher Arar, the Internal Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in relation to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin and the Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario. She was counsel for the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies at the Inquest into the Death of Ashley Smith.

Breese is a Vice President of the Criminal Lawyers Association. She also serves as an Assistant Editor of the Canadian Rights Reporter and as co-editor of For the Defence magazine published by the Criminal Lawyers Association. She is an adjunct professor of Criminology at the University of Toronto and has taught in the part-time LL.M program at Osgoode Hall Law School. Breese has also done volunteer legal work in Nigeria through Avocats sans frontiers Canada.

Michael Fawcett Michael Fawcett works as Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office (Criminal) branch of the Ministry of the Attorney General. His practice focuses on criminal appellate law – and, in particular, search and seizure and information sharing matters. He has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. Prior to joining his current office in 2013, Michael worked at a litigation boutique in Washington, D.C., and served as a law clerk to the United States Court of Appeal for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Nader Hasan

Nader R. Hasan, B.A. (Magna cum laude) (Harvard) 2002, M. Phil (Cambridge) 2003, J.D. (Honours) (University of Toronto) 2006, called to the Bar of Ontario (2007) and New York (2008), is counsel at Stockwoods LLP. Nader specializes in criminal and constitutional litigation. He frequently appears at the Ontario Court of Appeal and at the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to appearing on behalf of parties, he regularly appears in the appellate courts on behalf of intervener groups, including the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association (Ontario). Nader is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, where he teaches Evidence and a seminar on Crime & Punishment. He frequently lectures on criminal law and civil liberties issues and is an associate editor of the Canadian Rights Reporter. He is a co-author of Sentencing, 8th edition (LexisNexis, 2012), a co-author of a forthcoming book on privacy rights and digital technology, and author of numerous articles on criminal and constitutional law. Patrick Healy Cour du Québec, Montréal

Before his appointment to the Court of Québec in 2007 Patrick Healy was a professor of law for almost twenty years at McGill University. There he specialised in matters of criminal law, including substantive law, procedure, evidence, sentencing, comparative criminal law and international criminal law. He taught these subjects and has published extensively in all of them. He has lectured widely in Canada and abroad. For many years Patrick Healy was involved in issues of law reform. He advised governments and various non-governmental organisations and testified on several occasions before Parliament on issues concerning pending legislation. As counsel Patrick Healy acted for the prosecution and the defence in Quebec and elsewhere. He was Counsel to the firm of Shadley Battista in Montreal. For many years he was a member of the Comité permanent en droit criminel of the Quebec Bar and a member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Bar Association (Criminal - Quebec). He also served as a member of the General Council of the Canadian Bar Association in Quebec. Patrick Healy was a member of a committee of inquiry appointed under the Judges Act to inquire into the tenure of a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec. He advised the Canadian Judicial Council on many occasions with regard to judicial discipline and other matters. He was a member of the International Association of Penal Law and of the International Association of Prosecutors. Since 1995 Patrick Healy, with Anne-Marie Boisvert, has edited the Canadian Criminal Law Review. He has been a governor of the Fondation du Barreau du Québec. He has lectured extensively in programmes for the continuing education of judges and lawyers, often with the National Judicial Institute. He was President of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice (2013 – 2015) and is a director of the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. He continues to teach two courses each year as an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University, where is also a member of the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.

Brock Jones

B.A. (Hons) Queen’s 2000; M.A. University of Toronto, 2001; J.D. University of Toronto 2004.

Brock graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law in 2004 and then served as a judge’s clerk to the chief justice and several associate justices of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. From 2005-2013 he was an Assistant Crown Attorney with the Durham and Scarborough Crown Attorney’s offices. In 2013 he transferred to the office of Crown Law Criminal where he now works on appeals and criminal justice policy.

He has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Toronto since 2012. He is currently also the vice-chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section.

Michael W. Lacy

Michael W. Lacy, B.A., LL.B., is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer practicing primarily in the area of criminal law at the firm Brauti Thorning Zibarras LLP. He has practiced at all levels of trial courts in Ontario. He has also argued and appeared on numerous cases at the Court of Appeal for Ontario (more than 90 times) and has appeared as counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also appeared as counsel on cases in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Jill D. Makepeace

For almost a decade, Jill Makepeace has been an associate at Greenspan Humphrey Lavine. She has an advocacy practice focused on criminal trials and appeals. A significant concentration of her trial practice is defending professionals alleged to have engaged in criminal and regulatory impropriety in the course of their vocation. Jill obtained an LL.B. from the University of Windsor in 2003, and an LL.M. from the University of Alberta in 2008. From September of 2003 to August of 2004, Jill served as a Law Clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice Arthur Lutz in Yellowknife. That year was devoted to a lengthy civil trial arising out of the fatal blast at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife that killed 9 replacement workers during a labour dispute in 1992. Since the 2009-2010 academic year, Jill has been a sessional lecturer at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law. She currently teaches first year Criminal Law and Advanced Criminal Law. Jill is a member of the Criminal Lawyers' Association, Ontario Bar Association, and the Advocates' Society. She serves as co-editor of the publication of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association, For the Defence.

John McInnes

John McInnes is Crown Counsel with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney-

General, Crown Law Office – Criminal and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.

He received a B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1992 and an LL.B. from the

University of British Columbia in 1995. He articled at the Crown Law Office – Criminal in 1995-1996. From 1997 to 2000 he practiced as defence counsel. In 2000, Mr. McInnes returned to the Crown Law Office – Criminal as Crown counsel.

Mr. McInnes regularly appears in both trial and appellate matters at all levels of

court in Ontario and in the Supreme Court of Canada and currently serves as the Acting Deputy Director for appeals administration and as a member of the Justice Prosecutions Group within the Crown Law Office - Criminal.

Mr. McInnes has taught criminal procedure at the University of Toronto, Faculty

of Law since 2010. He has also published several articles on criminal law topics and is a frequent participant in continuing legal education programs for the profession and the judiciary.

IAN V. B. NORDHEIMER is a judge of the Superior Court of Justice – Ontario,

having been appointed to the court in April 1999. Prior to his appointment,

Justice Nordheimer was a partner in the Toronto office of Dentons Canada LLP

(formerly Fraser & Beatty) specializing in commercial litigation. He is a graduate

of Queen's University having received his B. Comm. (Hons.) in 1973 and his

LL.B. in 1976. He was formerly a member of both the Ontario and Alberta bars

and for many years taught civil procedure at the Bar Admission Course in

Toronto. He has been a frequent speaker at various conferences and seminars

put on by The Advocates’ Society, The Law Society of Upper Canada, the

Ontario Bar Association, the Ontario Crown Attorneys Association, the Criminal

Lawyers’ Association and other organizations.

BIOGRAPHY:

Jill R. Presser was called to the bar in 1997. She is the principal lawyer at the law firm of Presser Barristers. Ms.

Presser’s practice is primarily devoted to trial and appellate criminal defence. She regularly appears in courts at all

levels and represents clients before administrative tribunals. She was a staff lawyer to the Hon. Stephen Goudge on

the Commission of Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario. Ms. Presser is often appointed amicus curiae by the

Court of Appeal for Ontario in appeals involving unrepresented mentally disordered appellants. She also assists the

Court of Appeal for Ontario as duty counsel for unrepresented inmate and in-person appellants. She was a senior

lawyer member of the Consent and Capacity Board of Ontario from 2006 - 2014 and prosecuted for the Attorney

General of Ontario on a part-time basis from 2001 to 2007. Ms. Presser is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law

at the University of Toronto. She teaches, writes and speaks on a variety of topics in relation to criminal law,

evidence, mental health, law and technology and women in the legal profession.”

Jonathan Rudin

Jonathan Rudin received his LL.B. and LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. In 1990

he was hired to establish Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto and has been with ALST

ever since. Currently he is the Program Director. Mr. Rudin has appeared before all

levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada including representing ALST

before the Supreme Court in R v. Ipeelee (among other cases).

At ALST he helped establish the Community Council – the first urban Aboriginal justice

program in Canada in 1992, and in 2001 helped establish the Gladue (Aboriginal

Persons) Court at the Old City Hall Courts in Toronto.

Mr. Rudin has written and spoken widely on issues of Aboriginal justice. He co-wrote

the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples’ report on Justice – Bridging the Cultural

Divide- and was a member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Ipperwash

Inquiry. Mr. Rudin also teaches on a part-time basis in the Department of Liberal Arts

and Professional Studies and at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and also at

Ryerson University. Last but not least, he plays the mandolin and sings with Gordon’s

Acoustic Living Room, a group that plays regularly in Toronto and has a number of

videos on YouTube.

Justice P. Andras Schreck. Andras Schreck graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1994, was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996 and certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Criminal Law in 2003. He practiced as criminal defence counsel for 18 years, appearing at every level of court, including several times in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has been an adjunct professor of law at both the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Osgoode Hall Law School He was a Vice-President of the Ontario Criminal Lawyers Association from 2009 to 2013 and before that a director since 2003. He was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2014.
