    READING DETECTIVEA1 NONFICTION

    33. Defning Geometryby David White

1Geometry is a branch ofmathematics that focuses on shapes.2A large part of geometry is the studyof the lines, points, and angles usedto form these shapes. 3A line is a setof points that extend forever in twodirections. 4A line segment can bethought of as a part of a line joiningtwo end points. 5If two lines join atone point, they form an angle. 6Anangle is two rays* that extend from thesame point. 7Two rays that intersectat a right angle (90-degree) are calledperpediular.

8Lines can be joined to formgeometric gures. 9A three-sidedgure is a riagle. 10There are severaldifferent types of triangles, which varyaccording to the length and angles ofthe lines that form them. 11Here aresome denitions.

12Equilaeral riagle:atriangle with three equal sides

13Isseles riagle:a trianglewith two equal sides

14Salee riagle:a trianglewith no equal sides

15A four-sided gure is called aquadrilaeral, which is four points

joined by four lines to produce foursides. 16The following are denitions ofspecic types of quadrilaterals:

*ray: a half line that extends foreverin one direction from a point

17Parallelgram:a quadrilateralthat has opposite sides thatare parallel and equal inlength

18Reagle:a parallelogramthat has four right angles

19Square:a rectangle that hasfour equal sides

20The last basic geometric gure todene is the irle, a perfectly roundenclosed shape made by a curved line.21All points on the line are the samedistance (equidistant) from a xed

point in the center of the circle.
