Visit to the Old folks Home
By Ida Mastiqa binti Ahmad Fahri
Last Friday, the Interact Club made a visit to the Cherish Old
Folks Home in conjunction with Hari Raya. A team of 20 students
equipped with cleaning tools, presents, food and musical instruments
made their way there and arrived at about 9oclock. Surveying the
small, but cozy home, the students were divided into teams of five
and got to work.
I was on the clean-up team and we started making the beds.
Some of us wiped the dusty windows and swept up all the rubbish
scattered under the beds. From where I stood, I peered outside at the
gardening team. One could see that they were hard at work. Pulling
out the pesky weeds and sweeping up the dried leaves that the wind
had blown in. As I heard grunts and the dying sound of an engine, I
looked to the far end of the garden and I saw one of my friends
struggling with the out-of-date land mower.
Chuckling to myself, I continued wiping the windows until the
sheet of dust blocking the sunrays had been cleaned. I admired my
handy work from afar and the leader of my team gave me a nod of
approval. While keeping the tools, the strumming of a guitar caught
my attention and I hurried out to the sitting area. The entertainmentteam had set up their music equipment and started singing a catchy
tune. The old folks there laughed , clapped and sang along. It touched
my heart and I frowned when I thought of the people whom had left
them here. I brushed off that thought and started helping to prepare
the food we had brought for them.
I heard giggling and curiosity got the better of me so I looked
over my shoulder. Some girls of entertainment team were giving the
older ladies manicures and doing up their hair. A lot of them looked
very happy and the look on their faces was one of joy. As we servedthem some food, I took a quick glance at my watch. The day was
coming to an end already.
Our leader told us that it was time to give away some gifts and
say our goodbyes. Reluctant to leave, I put a smile on my face and
helped with the presents. Everyone looked sad to leave as everyone
had bonded. I felt a tug on my shirt and turned to see an old lady
behind me. She took my hand, looked at me in the eyes and gave her

thanks. Tears pricked my eyes as a returned for her thanks and I
packed up to leave.
Sitting in the bus, I looked at out my window and wavedgoodbye to all of them. Most of my peers were doing the same. Some
of them had even cried before they left. As the old folk home faded
into the horizon, I recapitulated on the days events and thought how
lucky I was to have met such kind people. It was truly an
unforgettable experience.
