is good to make a change, to go someplace for a couple of days. A simple change of working place can bring a breath of fresh air. For a hard working person vacation becomes an ob-session, a dream, a time of doing nothing, a time of no schedule or rules. Is it really that way what vacation is sup-posed to be? No, because if one wants to benefit from go-ing on vacation, vacation must be organized and meaning-

In the Herzgovinian Franciscan Province and the Croatian Custody of the Holy Family, two important events marked the first half of this year. The Custody is under jurisdiction of to the Province. First, the Custody held its chapter from February 26 to March 1, in Chi-cago, and then the Province held its chapter from April 16 to 20, 2007, at Humac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Franciscans at their chapters, among other things, analyze the life of their respective Franciscan community during the three past years, for the chapters are held every three years, and make plans and decisions for the next three years. Those present at the chapter also elect the new administra-tion. At the Custodial Chapter, for the next three years Fr. Marko Pulji was elected as Custos, and for the Council-ors: , Fr. Stjepan

, and Fr. Ni-.

At the Provincial Chapter, Fr. Ivan Sesar was elected as the Provincial and as the Vicar, for the next six years. The following Franciscans were elected as Defini-tors/Councilors: Fr. Milan Lo , Fr.

, Fr. Iko Skoko, Fr. and .

The longtime member of the Cus-tody, Fr. Slavko Soldo, was the Pro-vincial during the past six years.

At the Custodial chapter, among other things, it was decided to cease the activities of the Croatian Francis-can print shop in this year. Emotion-ally, that was a very hard decision to make because of the great history of the print shop. However, having in mind the lack of personnel in the Cus-tody and the expenses connected with the eventual upgrading of the print shop, that was the only feasible solu-

tion. The Franciscans in Herzegovina opened their print shop in the second half of the 19th century, the first one in that part of the world. When the Com-munist took over, they confiscated, among other things, the print shop as well. However, around the same time, in 1946, the Croatian Franciscans in Chicago opened their print shop. As soon as Communism collapsed, the Franciscan print shop in Mostar began operating, and now, it looks like follow-ing the pattern: the Franciscan print shop in Chicago will close this year. The words of gratitude belong to all directors of the print shop, especially to Fr. Paul Masladirector for so many years, and then to all workers, the past and the present. Saint Anthony is the patron of our Franciscan Friary in Chicago, from the beginning on September 3, 1944. Every year on his feast day, many people from all Croatian parishes in the Midwest area - Sacred Heart, St. Jerome, Holy Trinity, Bl. A. Stepinac, all from Chicago; Sacred Heart from Milwaukee and St. Augustine from West Allis - come to the celebration of the Eucharist, and then stay for a so-cial afterwards. uplifting. At the beginning of the Eucharist a new statue of St. Anthony, which is situated in nicely renovated surrounding, was blessed. A proces-sion with banners and signs of many Croatian church societies from the Midwest area was formed after the blessing to the outdoor altar. The main celebrant was Fr. Ivica Ma , accompanied by eleven priests. Members from the mentioned parishes took part in various capacities during the Eucharist. There were many individuals who in many ways helped at the renovation of the Shrine. The blueprints were made by a young architect from Chicago, Ivan Kut who also supervised the

progress of the work. The work was

Bruno Bakija, who donated his work. The statue was donated by two families from St. Jerome who wanted not to be mentioned. There were some monetary donations, as well. Bathed in light in the evening and furnished with benches, the Shrine is a perfect place for meditation and mo-ments of quiet.

With the celebration of the Eucharist and a banquet at the parish hall after-wards, Fr. Philip Pavich celebrated his 50th priesthood anniversary at St.

He was the main celebrant accompa-nied by ten other priests from the Cus-tody and the Province of Sacred Heart from St. Louis. Some other priests joined later, adding to sixteen alto-gether. were also his friends from New York, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Wiscon-sin. Another celebration with more relatives and friends took place on July 1, in his home parish in Waterloo, Iowa. Fr. Philip was born on May 12, 1930 in Waterloo, Iowa, from Steve Pavich ( and Marija Vrban. After fin-ishing the Grammar School in his home town, he went to the Minor Fran-ciscan Seminary of St. Joseph in

Westmont, Illinois. After that, he then entered the Novitiate in Teutopolis, Illinois, as a member of the Sacred Heart Province from St. Louis. He studied philosophy and theology in Cleveland and at Quincy University. With sixteen other candidates he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1957 at Teutopolis, of whom are eight still alive. As a member of the Province of Sa-cred Heart he served as the assistant Novice master, associate pastor, and student master. Since 1975 until 1986,

he lived and worked in the Custody of the Holy Land. Moved by the events in Me , Fr. Philip joined the Croatian Custody located in Chicago, and in 1986 he went to Me , where he worked with the English speaking pilgrims. In the year of 2000 he returned to Chi-cago and he accompanies now the pilgrims to the Holy Land or some other holy places. When needed, he fills in from time to time for priests in the parishes the Custody serves.

The bishop told him that he too was soon traveling to Rome for a meet-ing which Pope Innocent III and that it would be beneficial for them to be there at the same time. Francis accepted the offer. with his eleven friends came to Rome in April 1209. He did not come with a document in hand like the Rule of the Benedictines, Au-gustinians or Cistercians - great orders in the Church at that time - but, as Francis himself later de-scribed it, with several hastily writ-ten gospel verses about simplicity of life with some remarks about work and community prayer. It can be assumed that Bishop Guido during his stay in Rome fa-cilitated the meetings of Francis and his followers with Pope Inno-cent III. Since the text of the Rule that Francis brought to the Pope had very little to say about the concrete manner of life of this new group of preachers, it was sug-gested for them to adopt the Rule of some other religious commu-nity. Francis did not agree with that. It was proposed that they think it over and appear again be-fore the Pope the next day. After the night spent mostly in prayer, Francis did not change his position, but in his humility again just asked permission for himself and the brothers to be able to preach and invite people to do penance. But, something still had to be done with which Francis had not reckoned. It was also required of him and his fellow-travelers to demonstrate their obedience to the Roman Pope in some external way. In that case they would have to receive the tonsure the ceremonial hair cut on top of the head that was the sign of reception into the low-est (non-priestly) rank of the cleri-cal state, and thereby also of obe-dience to the supreme authority of the Church. In other words, al-ready since the seventh century the tonsure was introduced, origi-nally among religious, as the first step in preparation for the priest-hood. It was to be expected that Fran-cis was not enthusiastic about that proposal, especially since Francis had no intention of becoming a cleric, nor did he want to become a priest. He did die as a deacon. Throughout his entire life he thought of and spoke in superla-tives about the priesthood, but he thought that he was unworthy of such an exalted ministry because he felt that his vocation was to live out littleness. Never did he require of his brothers, nor did he expect that the brothers who joined him, would be ordained as priests. Priests, like Sylvester who wanted to join him, in as much as they wished to live in simplicity and poverty, he received with great joy. eyes of many was a real visionary, but still did not lose a sense of the practical. That first Rule, which Francis presented to Pope Innocent III to look at and approve, has been lost. It would, in other words, become clear that this verbal permission of the Pope would not suffice for a community that grew quickly and for which clearer directions and regulations for living its vocation, mission and charism would have to be put in place. Therefore, Francis with his brothers would take up the writing of a Rule. (To be continued in the next issue)

The first recorded reference to the TAU is from Ezekiel 9:4, "Go through the city of Jerusalem and put a TAU on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it." Those with the sign of TAU will be saved, while the others will be punished for their wickedness. The TAU is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet and looks very much like the letter "T". At the Fourth Lateran Council, on November 11, 1215, Pope

Innocent made reference to the TAU and quoted the above verse in reference to the profan-ing of the Holy Places by the Saracens. It is widely accepted that St. Francis was present at the Fourth Lateran Council and that he heard the words of Pope Innocent III when he said, "The TAU has exactly the same form as the Cross on which our Lord was crucified on Calvary, and only those will be marked with this sign and will obtain mercy who have mortified their flesh and conformed their life to that

May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace! God bless you Brother Leo!" Francis sketched a head (of Brother Leo) and then drew the TAU over this portrait. Due, no doubt, in large part to Francis' own affection for and devotion to the TAU, it has been a well recognized and ac-cepted Franciscan symbol among Franciscans of various denominations for centuries. It remains so today. The TAU carries with it all of the symbolism of the Cross of Christ as well as Francis' ideal of life and dream for himself and his followers.

B lessed Alojzije Stepinac has been the special

patron of our community here on the north side of Chicago since 1989. Our patron was dedicated to his Croatian peo-ple through faith and suffering, and therefore his feast is cele-brated in all our parishes. Our Croatian Loza, together with the community, acknowledged his feast day and gave witness to Blessed Alojzije (Aloysius) Ste-pinac on Saturday, February 10th. We celebrated the life and martyr-dom of this truly holy cardinal with Mass on Sunday as is done in all our parishes. The verse sung during the

and it brought forth the motto which so characterizes our Blessed Alojzije Stepinac. A short memorial concert with two violins and readings about the life of our blessed patron were pre-sented after Mass. All were re-newed in spirit by remembering the work of our blessed patron who was and still is a primary example of faith and suffering for Croatian priests and a suffering people. Encouraged by this celebration and his beatification, we were moved to live our Christian faith more courageously. Together with Christ we then entered into the desert of Lent which was seen in our church through sand and cacti instead of beautiful flowers. Fra Mate Logara, who was spending his diaconate year in our Custody, came to our parish. Fra Milan Knezovic, who is in his fourth year of theology for the Society of the Divine Word in Hyde Park, and comes to us every Sunday, with Fra Mate made it much easier to prepare and indeed to properly and solemnly celebrate Holy Week and Easter. Accompanied by violins we

sang hymns from Taize during the adoration after the Mass on Holy Thursday. Music, mixed voices and reverence formed a prayerful medley in which heaven and this holy night were brought so close to each other. Indeed these great days were celebrated with appro-

priate solemnity, and in con-clusion came the resurrection light Holy Saturday. The singing of two hymns by the children on Easter was inspir-ing for their relatives and a church filled with the faithful who came to celebrate the primary feast of the Christian

After his ordination in New York, Fra Mate returned to Herze-govina, and Fra Milan already went to Brazil to spend his preparation for his future ministry. A group of our parishioners, together with some parishioners from St. Augustine from West Allis, was with Fr. Ivica and Fr. Law-rence Frankovich on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Summer has invited many of our parishioners to visit Croatia, and they gladly followed that call.

On February 25, Napredak held its annual meeting where the new board was elected and where plans for the year ahead were made. Congratulations go out to Ivan Jureta, who was re-elected as president. This was also an opportunity for the students to see artwork from the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, who was a profes-sor at the university from 1955-1962. Many of his masterpieces in wood or stone are there, especially his world-recognized Pieta. Ivanka Paraga of our Croatian School has successfully organized this always appealing educational field trip. Annual Marian Society retreat which has been a part of the parish for more than ten years had its annual retreat on Saturday, March 31 at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein a town named after a Chicago archbishop: George Mundelein. About 30 women from our par-ish answered this Lenten call to spiritual renewal. A day of reflec-tion, prayer, silence, celebration of the Eucharist and socializing is a truly rich experience different from the daily fast-paced lifestyle. Hold-ing more such retreats in the future will continue to aid these women in serving as vital examples of good-ness and love in our community.

For 36 years the parish had its own Catholic elementary school. The Daughters of Divine Charity led the school the entire time, and, with the help of lay teachers, they taught the children. Due to a de-creasing enrollment, the school was closed in 1993. The class-rooms are currently leased to Veri-tas, a private Catholic school, which has excellently entered into the life and work of the parish. The parish is exceptionally known for its most famous parish-

The retreat was very refreshing and fruitful. It not only gave me a chance to be together with my brother priests, but also gave me a chance to reflect on my life, my obligation to God and my responsi-bility to the Church and people entrusted to my care. After the retreat, I made the trip to Croatia that I was longing for. As always, it was enlightening. This year I was invited by Fa-ther Ljubo Lebo, Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Windsor, to be their main celebrant for Stepinac Day. Although I was greatly honored to be invited to their celebration, it was very diffi-cult for me to be away from my parishes on this special day. On Tuesday, February 20, 2007, I was privileged to have Fa-ther Finian McGinn, member of St. Barbara Province in California, visit both parishes. Father Finian McGinn is the General Definitor of the Franciscan Order and the Gen-eral Visitor for the Croatian Cus-tody. He came from Rome to pre-side over the Chapter of The Croa-tian Franciscan Custody of the Holy Family, which was held in Chicago from February 26 through March 1, 2007. I was pleased that I had the opportunity to visit with him in Sault Ste. Marie because my plan to attend this Chapter was cancelled due to the weather. Father Finian was gracious to accept our request to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass on Tuesday, February 20th at St. Boniface Par-ish. He made such a good impres-sion with our parishioners and me. The sufferings and death of this glori-ous King were then proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word. The Easter Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday takes on a life of its own. While these days have a tinge of Lent within themselves, the glory of the Easter mystery begins to throb in the prayers and hearts of the faithful. This comes to fruition when the Easter Proclamation and first Alleluia sound forth; the tomb is indeed recognized as empty, but the world is filled with the glory of

in the celebration of Easter. They especially enjoyed waving the palm branches in the Palm Sunday Procession. The very young chil-dren were treated to an Easter Egg hunt on the Second Sunday of Easter. Likewise, that day the names of the First Communicants and Confirmation candidates were distributed to parishioners. Parish-ioners were asked to pray for that particular child or teenager and remember them with a card on their special days later in the Easter Season.

A man with silent courage was Martin Stimac. He expressed only the best side of life, never com-

plained about the daily annoyances that aggravate us, carried a life-long love for his homeland, Croatia, and was a most devoted husband to Bertha, his Slovenian-born

children.

One wonders what it takes for a man to be so revered and beloved by so many people as was Martin. Every one of us has experienced his loving and forgiving nature and his kindness. I believe he came to appreciate all people, be-cause he wanted to make something positive from the

traumatic experiences he was handed in his early life. As a result, he showed immense respect for everyone he met, his neighbors, his fellow church-goers, the Francis-cans, and us, his co-workers. Martin never spoke a word in reprimand or with a hint of criticism. If I think about it, being his friend for over 35 years made me, a better per-son for it. You may feel the same way.

Paul Maslach, the director of the Print Shop, pre-sided over the Funeral Mass, accompanied with four more priests. How beautiful it is to meet a person like Martin was. We thank you, Martin, for the Christian joy and happiness you radiated to us. May the Lord grant you his peace!

There, the hand of God touched him and he met the love of his life, the ador-able 17 year old Bertha. Soon, these two beautiful young people married and vowed to be together forever. From what they have revealed about their early years we know that their first son, Martin, was born there. Before long, they decided to seek a new life in America; and in 1954, again with courage and faith, they made the long journey, away from all they knew, to a new place, the big city of Chicago. Martin worked, Bertha stayed home and, one by one, they happily welcomed three more children, Mary, George and Peter. Imagine them, practically still newlyweds, first hav-ing to learn to speak a new language, then, having to ac-cept all the differences of a new culture and life-style, and, not too long after, accepting the responsibility of parent-hood, and raising a large family. Their love story began the first time Martin looked at Bertha and it continued through difficult times with the same intensity as it began, until the end.

He loved to tease her whenever he could get away with it. Prince and I had some fun whenever this happened and lunch time was the best time for laughter. And, if you know Martin at all, you know he was a man of strict habit

Martin played chess all his life. He loved that game. There was a chess set ready to go any time at his home. He played it with his old childhood friends, and with his grandsons whom he taught when they were still young. He loved the Chicago sports teams and followed their progress getting frustrated as we all did in the past years. Even in his last days when the family held a vigil at his bedside, he told his sons that he wanted to watch the Bears win the game last Sunday.

He died with his family around him in a quiet room filled with love.
