DESCRIPTION

We have reached the time of year when sadly we have to illuminate our houses. Here, in parts of the mill, we have to illuminate all the time, as there are no outside windows. It is from one of these rooms that I am speaking to you now; where in the far corner are the majority of my golf clubs and indeed most of my other golf accoutrements. This is in part a punishment for them not serving me as well as I wanted during the current golf season, the naughty corner.

All about fabric

A✿✿ A FAltering Federer

Elsewhere we have Federer; a 60” wide 70% cotton 30% linen cloth in green which is probably made for shorts or trousers maybe for tennis players, as wonderful as Roger Federer is, sadly we have an odd 10mtrs which has got a rogue yarn in it. This yarn is about 12” in from one of the selvedges and isn’t constant, it’s picked up a bit of dye from somewhere it shouldn’t have done and it didn’t bleach out. So it’s marred so instead of £10.00mtr it’s only £3.50mtr.

REF: CM195 60” (152 cm) wide £3.50 per metre

✿✿ AlternAtive therApy56” or 140cm wide, 30% wool 70% viscose dress fabric, the base cloth is a dark brown with a hint of brown perhaps, upon which are printed little explosive star shapes, almost firework display like. Have you got the drift, when a rocket goes up it explodes into thousands of little bursty things, well it’s like that. It has a lovely soft hand and I suspect it is made as an alternative to viyella, Made in Italy and is very classy.

REF: CM197 56” (142 cm) wide £9.50 per metre

✿✿ Amber nectArWhilst I wouldn’t wish any cloth to remind anyone of beer this particular amber cloth I have to tell you about is perhaps a bit more of a Polynesian gold and I know you will be wondering how on earth does he know what that’s all about and I can only tell you it comes from one of the Technicolor films we have just been talking about. Coffee coloured might be the way that advertising people would describe it now if it was make-up, a glorious sultry, amber/gold. It is actually a film adhered to a thin black polyester jersey. Exactly what you would use it for I am unsure. Lightweight and pliable because it’s a knitted fabric, I am told it was used for blouses and dresses. The price is almost worth the colour alone.

REF: CM197 60” (152 cm) wide £4.00 per metre

✿✿ ArFACotton elastane needlecord shirting/trousering not unlike fabrics seen on the catwalk for designers like Burberry. This is really soft and if you are looking on the web, I know Caroline may struggle to get the photo to give an exact colour representation but this is a nice light beige/creamy colour, it will go with a lot of stuff.

REF: CM182 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ ArmAdANavy blue 60% wool, 40% polyester suiting with a superfine almost herringbone weave but it isn’t. In old fashioned money, probably a 7 to 8 oz cloth so it has substance without being too heavy.

REF: AP03 60” (152 cm) wide £10.00 per metre

B✿✿ Baumgartner

There is a certain element of boldness about the men who leap from somewhere around the moon and fall to earth making a soft landing or walk on wires over the Niagara Falls. I would say they must be part crackers. You don’t have to be part crackers to buy this very bold black and white check boucle jacketing. It is an approximately 2” square check and the chunky yarns are slightly proud of the cloth giving it a boucle appearance. It is a mixture of wool polyester and acrylic, has a reasonable weight.

REF: CM117 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ Bargain BundlesWe have 20 or so bundles, of around 10mtrs each, of a fair variety of short lengths cloths from half a metre to one and a half metres, some lightweight some heavyweight. There are no guarantees of what you will get, it is just a mixture of everything that has been in the catalogue, the cost of the cloths, anything from £3,00 to £15.00mtr. I have made these up, so am hoping that you can be persuaded to buy. However you have to have bought something else in order to have one of these, they are fairly rare and well worth having if you can use smaller lengths of cloth. They are £8.50 each as long as you have bought £25.00 worth of stuff (including the bundle). We can really only do 1 per order.

£8.50 each

Put big light on!We have reached the time of year when sadly we have to illuminate our houses. I am told by those around me that we

are due to have a bit of a heat wave in the coming week which puts me in a bit of a quandary as to where to start but as there has never been any rhyme nor reason to the way I have done these catalogues over the years why change now. In fact it doesn’t matter how I list things, other people change them behind my back, or when I’m not here. If it’s worse than it used to be it’s not my fault. So I hope you winter well and enjoy some of the fabrics I shall now tell you about.

✿✿ BattlesHiPFinely woven polyester, with a synthetic rubber coating. It is completely waterproof. I can’t believe it’s entirely breathable; however it is in a fulsome battleship grey colour.

REF: OT14 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ BlusH

60” wide, polyester corduroy. Now I do understand that you can’t have polyester corduroy, but you can have a cloth that looks like cord, which is made from polyester, that’s what this is. A fairly chunky cord but soft, in a very light taupy brown. It drapes beautifully and has a very soft hand. It was made for lightweight jackets I understand, so maybe that’s what you would do, maybe cushions or teddies? It will wear and bounce back because it’s polyester. Cheap enough at £4.00mtr.

REF: CM181 60” (152 cm) wide £4.00 per metre

✿✿ BOlOtteHow do they do that is a question that, sadly, I am unable to answer. This is a 60” (152 cm) wide black polyester dress fabric with a fine horizontal pin stripe design in white and then comes the clever bit. What they have done is to crease the cloth in a fairly random fashion so the fabric appears to have a deeper black, random fine embroidered, rope-like pattern. It’s a permanent feature of the cloth and it won’t come out and the effect is quite astonishing. It has a soft finish. Picture on the back page.

REF: CM007 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ BOuncing cHecksTwo absolutely wonderful 60” wide shirting cloths;a) A Time to Remember – Beautiful cotton Viyella type check cloth, variety in the weave as well as the colours, beautiful!b) Halcyon Days – Fine fabulous cotton check shirting from a long gone famous mill. Please have a look at the picture on the back.

REF: CM199 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ BrigHt and Beautiful

Following on from our extreme good fortune in getting hold of some good woollen fabrics this year here comes another. A bright cerise wool velour, I pause to let that sink in, both to me and to you because you don’t see cloths as beautiful as this, in this kind of colour. To say it is vibrant is an understatement, it’s gorgeous, having softness you couldn’t believe but it still has quite a bit of body. It isn’t much heavier than a fleece fabric It will make anything from wonderful dressing gowns to jackets and possibly a coat, but not winter weight, if there is such a thing these days. £20.00 mtr. I know that sounds a lot but you should have seen the original price tags for the wool fabrics.

REF: CM200 60” (152 cm) wide £20.00 per metre

✿✿ BrOcade

60” (152 cm) wide poly/viscose ‘brocade’ like cloth with an abstract design in grey and black. Good weight with a soft finish.

REF: CM148 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ BwHna60“ (152 cm) wide fabulous herringbone weave, cotton trousering in a very dark navy blue. It has been very lightly gone over to give a wonderful hand and very good drape; another trousering from Gurteen.

✿✿ BZZ60” wide polyester voile blouse fabric in black with 5mm wide white and gold horizontal stripes. Looks a little bit like an anaemic bee; perhaps more black than a bee but when you’re in a jam keep going. Wonderfully floaty. Picture on the back page.

REF: CM110 60” (152 cm) wide £5.50 per metre

C✿✿ cascade

A lovely soft drapey viscose in black with a riotous assembly of small colourful flowers in red white and green. Easy to sew, wash and wear.

REF: CM168 56” (142 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ cagneY An extremely stretchy ruched fancy polyester lace. It stretches every which way and then some and it a quite loose but heavy open lace with a floral pattern joined with heavier bands of yarn and then criss-crossed with finer bands with smaller flowers within those. It comes in cream and carries the awful tag of being a designer fabric.

REF: CM142 50” (127 cm) wide £5.50 per metre

✿✿ cHamOisA very fine 60” (152 cm) wide dark brown cotton chamois fabric which as the name suggests is basically a cotton cloth that has been simulated to copy a chamois leather, it is similar to a moleskin in that it has a nap and has been brushed so it has the hand of a soft velvet.

REF: AP12b 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ cOalitiOnWell we’re getting along very nicely without money, aren’t we? Best to not go down that road, eh? This cloth is another 60” wide poly wool suiting in a medium to dark grey, light weight, summer weight even, in a very fine hopsack weave.

REF: CM134 60” (152 cm) wide £8.50 per metre

✿✿ cOrdurOYWe have a few colours left in these glorious 8 Wale all cotton corduroys. As you are probably aware not much is made in this country these days and generally not readily available. However these arrived here from a maker in a far of land, originally exported from here it was sent there to be made up but then he went bump the cloth was then brought back here. What a tangle web we weave. a) Deep plumb redc) A dark brown which has a silvery top to the raised portion of the corde) A pale gold

✿✿ crOucHing tigerImagine if you will hiding in the undergrowth waiting to frighten a tiger to death, you can see him he can’t see you. Why can’t he see you? Because you have made a cat suit from this incredible stretch velvet. The reason for its incredibility is that it has been dyed in a brown, almost tiny ocelot pattern, which has in it a very, very faint check. From where I am standing it looks like camouflage. Very light, it doesn’t behave just like any old velvet, this is special.

REF: CM 107 60” (152 cm) wide £7.50 per metre

D✿✿ darcY

This is a boucle made from wool polyester acrylic and a bit of a whispy shiny fiber, of whose origins I am uncertain. The overall appearance is of a grey tweed but the yarns used are grey, black, silver and white. Soft almost to the point of floppiness but there is plenty of body in the cloth. A cloth that goes in and out of fashion almost as often as the Tories make gaffs.

REF: CM202 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ denimThe full blown proper cotton denim is almost as rare as hens teeth these days in that most of it is made in China and most of it gets made into garments in China so we have to look for alternatives and latterly we have found this little batch. There is not a lot of any of it but they are all 60” wide a) Black – This is in black, not completely black because it’s made up of black and cream yarns in fairly traditional denim weave. It is about half the weight of the heaviest of denims, which is usually 14¾ oz and needs a bucking bronco to break it in. It is made from cotton polyester and lycra and therefore will wear quite differently and it has a certain elegance to it.b) Golden – The same fabric except the weave is slightly different. Whilst it is described as gold on the label it’s actually made up of brown and pale orange yarn and whilst the orange only shows through in the background it certainly could be said to have a golden tinge to it.c) Bluish – Pretty much the same as the others but made from blue and very pale peachy beigeish yarns whose effect is to break down the surface slightly so that it doesn’t look all blue.

REF: CM178 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ dO YOu knOw wHat i mean?A term well used in our part of the world, along with ‘if you will’ in fact often only interspersed with a few other words, e by gum conversations can be hard going at times. Anyway this polyester fabric is a designer lining, no better quality than the other linings we have but never the less, if you have this with our coating fabric you may just look like you are wearing a Burberry coat. Do you know what I mean?

REF: CM184 60” (152 cm) wide £4.25 per metre

✿✿ dOuBle cOrdThis is a double cord in that it has one thick whale then one thin whale. Altogether there are 5 of these double whales to the inch, so it is chunkier. It comes in a) A Lovely Gold b) Pale Rust (picture on front cover)

REF: JA1 60” wide and an aBsOlute triumPH £7.50 per metre

F✿✿ federer

60” (152 cm) wide 80% cotton, 20% linen ivory fabric in a suiting weight with weave interest akin to that of a linen. This is not a soft fabric and has crisp feel to it. It would be good for structured clothing and could even be used for tablecloths.

REF: CM073 60” (152 cm) wide £7.25 per metre

✿✿ fOrsOOtHWe’ve got a little collection of tweeds, fine tweeds, woven on very old looms. I’d like to think that they were hand looms but I don’t think they are. The cloth is only 1mtr (39”) wide, in fact it’s not quite that wide. It has a little bit of a rough hand to it, not a lot, but it is not a silky cloth, in the way that a modern worsted wool cloth is. They are genuine tweeds woven with different coloured yarns. Some new colours sold out and some new added.a) Heather Blue b) Forrest c) Beige f) Leaf Green g) Natural Grey These are narrow and they have a bit of history and they are nicely made. £7.00 per metre, which if you double it up to £14.00 for a wider cloth you will not get a better cloth for anything like that kind of money, no matter where you go. Trust me I’m a cloth salesman.

REF: CM019 33” (83 cm) wide £7.00 per metre

G✿✿ gAnt

I✿✿ i wandered lOnelY...

“I wandered lonely as a cloud” I think the poem goes, but I haven’t seen any lonely clouds this year, they are around in throngs, crowds, multitudes, providing us with the necessary water to keep us flooded, but to continue, I should have seen rows of daffodils but instead I have come across a field of tiny white flowers on a light burgundy cotton needle-cord. Very pretty, very soft, very expensive but it is nice.

✿✿ maureen O’HaraSadly I can remember the halcyon days of cinema when the female stars of the day were indeed glamorous and Technicolor had just become the medium to transport colour into our cinemas. Every colour was enhanced beyond all that is natural and we were all the more uplifted because of it. An uplifting character in lots of films was Maureen O’Hara, a flame haired beautiful woman who played anything from posh ladies to gypsies and the like. I have a 60” wide cloth before me which is one of the vivid colours that I imagine were the case when Technicolor was first invented, it’s a brilliant rich purply blue, a kind of soft taffeta made in polyester with a delightful very fine textured finish. If you can imagine blouses with big balloon sleeves, buttoned up to the neck covering what the film director wanted to tease you with, I digress. Beautiful cloth, fabulous colour.

✿✿ nOBBledThis 60” wide cloth, from afar looks fairly bland and uninteresting, a closer examination reveals that one, it is all cotton, which I didn’t expect and secondly it has a slightly nobbley textured appearance due to a nobble in the warp yarn. It comes in white, not a brilliant white, slightly off white. A good 7oz cloth, which puts it in the same bracket as something like a chino, it’s got a bit of density to it. We haven’t got a lot, it will make nice summery things or perhaps even a throw.

60” wide, heavy-duty polyester canvas, coated with white waterproof polyurethane. It comes in unblemished white and is £3.00mtr.

beautiful fabrics delivered to your door

✿✿ PlatOOn60” wide very superior cotton canvas in olive green. There must be an army somewhere that dresses in this colour, but who would wish for a cloth as tough and yet as soft as this is for a uniform. You will make outstanding beautiful items from this cloth.

REF: CM207 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ POPlin Prints - reducedYou may be able to see the pictures in the last catalogue, we have some cotton poplin prints in a patchwork design which are slightly faulty in that they are bowed, if it wasn’t for the pattern it wouldn’t matter really but because the fabric is bowed the lines of the patchwork are not straight (only one way from selvedge to selvedge). If this does not matter to you, you can have these for £4.00 per metre.a) Patch – Pinks and ivory with little red and pink flowers.b) Patch – Pale Blues and ivory with little red and pink flowers.c) Patch – Black, Greys and ivory with little red and pink flowers.d) Patch – Navy, Royal Blue and ivory with little red and pink flowers.

REF: PP12 45” (112 cm) wide £4.00 per metre

✿✿ POPlin – wHitePure and simple 60” wide 100% white cotton poplin in brilliant white and nearly of a quality produced in this mill umpteen years ago. We will endeavour to get more of this cloth expensive though it is as is in the future it is likely to be made in China and the quality will not be as good by any stretch of the imagination.

REF: CH26 60” (152 cm) wide £5.25 per metre

✿✿ Ps. i lOVe YOu60” wide black horizontally pleated satin, the sort of stuff when used ‘tother’ way up, longitudinally, makes skirts that both cling and swirl and could almost be a one size fits all situation. Having said that don’t scrimp, otherwise the pleats the pleats won’t be pleats will they. It could almost be something for those “ I want to be alone” moments with a fag, a cup of tea and Coronation Street.

REF: CM208 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ Put tHe kettle On

45” (114 cm) wide polycotton prints.

REF: CM046 45” (114 cm) wide £3.50 per metre

✿✿ Pure wHite miscHief Beautifully made fine cotton crépe in pure white. Soft as the proverbial. Gorgeous. Exactly the same fabric as we had before except this is pure white.

REF: CM150 60” (152 cm) wide £4.50 per metre

Q✿✿ QUilted FUr

60” wide faux fur coating fabric in which has been quilted to a polyester peach skin finished backcloth. The backcloth has then been embroidered and embellished with rows of tiny shiny sequins. Described as being reversible, who knows, you would probably want to wear the fur on the outside all the time but if you didn’t you would have something that had an evening appearance. Very different and special.a) Chocolate brown b) Grey

REF: CM189 60” (152 cm) wide £10.00 per metre

✿✿ QUilted FleeceThese really are quite unusual fabrics and quite special too, this is a checked fleece fabric with a plain polyester fabric attached to the reverse. The fleece has been stitched into plain cloth giving a wonderful pattern on the plain side. Think it may best be described by looking at the picture on the back page but it will make super gilets. It comes in two patterns.a) Twirl - Navy back with fleece check (picture on the back)b) Stars - Black back with fleece check

REF: CM209 60” (152 cm) wide £10.00 per metre

R✿✿ racing silk

100% polyester artificial silk ina) Red b) Blue c) White

REF: MY27 57” (145 cm) wide £2.75 per metre

✿✿ red is tHe cOlOurThis red cotton drill has been given a flame-retardant backing. It doesn’t do anything special apart from not burning. It doesn’t make a great deal of difference to how the fabric behaves except, perhaps, to make it a tad stiffer than it otherwise would be. It is still quite malleable though but being cotton and a drill it is obviously very strong.

REF: CM149 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ rusH Of BlOOdPeach finish woven polyester dress fabric in a fairly manic gamut of colour in an abstract design. Colours involved are purple black, soft orange, cerise and white. Picture on back.

S✿✿ scOttisH widOw

You will remember when the original Scottish widow ads were shown you barely got a glimpse of who was wearing the cloak, there was every reason to believe she couldn’t move her head as the cape was too heavy. How times change. We have a very lightweight poly/lycra suiting which is incredibly fine, whisper light and yet extremely dense due to the volume and fineness of the yarns involved. It is virtually uncreaseable, and drapes beautifully. The colour is a very dark black and will make anything from every day articles to evening attire.

✿✿ start as YOu mean tO gO On65% viscose/20% polyester/15% linen dress fabric in black, which has a random all over permanent creasing. It doesn’t look creased in the sense that it has all been scrunched up, these are designer creases and in its way it is attractive. A dress weight cloth with a little bit of open weave so there is a bit of a see through element about it so a liberty bodice wouldn’t go amiss. Rather nice. Picture on the back page.

REF: CM211 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ stretcH VelVet60” wide, 98% cotton with 2% Lycra velveteen dress fabric in a) Black b) Dark chocolate brownReasonable weight even though it is quite fine, perfect for trousers skirts and jackets with the Lycra to give it the extra comfort.

REF: CH30 60” (152 cm) wide £10.00 per metre

✿✿ suPer fleece60” wide polyester fleece with a difference in that it isn’t an all over fleece, it looks as though it’s embossed i.e. the back cloth is flat and there are raised starfish, sea anemones, and other sorts of floaty things that suggest looking into water. The thing that dispels that myth is the fact that the back cloth is cream and all the shapes are in blues, oranges, rusts, lemon, navy blue, pale blue, grey and green. Perhaps it is a bit like looking in a coral sea. Not cheap but it is different.

REF: CM191 60” (152 cm) wide £7.00 per metre

T✿✿ taHiti

All about fabric

✿✿ tHree men in a BOat We have finally begun to persuade you about this fabric but we still have some left. A 40% poly/60% wool gabardine in a stripe design and in three colourways. Someone wanted to buy 58 metres of this as a cheap stripe for a show only to dispose of it afterwards which is sacrilege for a British woven wool gabardine. My heart sank but fortunately we didn’t have enough left as I don’t think I could have brought myself to that. Someone must have a better use that that? Curtains, anything?a) In blue/grey/beige.b) In slate/dark turquoise/green.c) In sand/browny beige/pinky beige. The stripes are about 1” (2.5 cm) wide, interspersed with border stripes in contrasting but complementary colours.

REF: CM137 60” (152 cm) wide £3.50 per metre

✿✿ tOwelling 60” wide, excellent quality white cotton terry towelling with a very nice silky soft finish. This does shrink so wash before you sew. We now sell cotton tape which you can use as edging if you are making towels.

REF: CM159 60” (152 cm) wide £8.50 per metre

✿✿ trOPical60” (152 cm) wide 60% wool, 40% polyester in a very fine hopsack weave, the sort of weight that those who used to go on the Grand Tour would have had when they reached warmer climes. Virtually crease proof, drapes absolutely beautifully and in a delicious shade of a tanny brown.

REF: AP22 60” (152 cm) wide £7.00 per metre

✿✿ trY meA 60” (152 cm) wide polyester ‘denim ‘look fabric made up of blue and white yarns. It is a twill weave but it is obviously not denim as this has a shiny silky look to it just to add to the confusion. It is an expensive looking fabric and it doesn’t crease, so could make perfect slouchy elegant looking pants for your hols. Last little bit.

REF: CM119 60” (152 cm) wide £6.50 per metre

✿✿ twO Of a kind56” (142 cm) wide cotton furnishings, you could even make some nice pinnys out of this superb quality cotton furnishing. a) Shilton – A broad strip design with flowers.b) Fullbrook – A diamond criss-cross design. Both in pale turquoise/rust/green.

REF: CM212 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

V✿✿ Van winkle

60” (152 cm) wide 70% cotton 30% polyester fine cotton twill made to go into nightshirts and blue willy winkie caps to be sold as Christmas gifts in USA. A lovely soft hand and fairly substantial. Picture on back page.

REF: CM147 60” (152 cm) wide £5.00 per metre

✿✿ Vader This reversible poly/viscose “melton” cloth, jacket/light coating weight which is black on one side and black with a fairly subdued check in burgundy on the other side. The check is made up of broad bands and fine lines which meld well into the black background but not so well that you can’t see it. It will be an excellent wearing cloth and fairly warm because of the brushed finish that it has. A very smart and cosy fabric. Picture on the cover.

REF: CM215 60” (152 cm) wide £7.50 per metre

✿✿ Vegas45” wide, brushed cotton flannel in lots of vibrant colours. 100% cotton, decent quality.

We have some plain and some not, some old and some new.Plainsb) Teal c) Brown d) Marl Grey – mid to dark greye) Pink – pretty bright – bluey – not peachy pink. f) Black

✿✿ WAFFle ii60” wide heavy cotton waffle fabric in white, widely used at one time in the best places to stay where dressing gowns and slippers were made of the same. Perfect for curtains and bedding too.

REF: CM156 all 58” (148 cm) wide £10.00 per metre

✿✿ WAistcOAt & WAt nOtWe have had these for some time under many different guises; the names can confuse us as much as you but the last was a duplicated name so caused no end of bother, hence a new name. These 60” (152cm) wide cloths did arrive from a maker of fine gentlemen’s suitings and because they aren’t suitings I assumed they were linings. Not necessarily. Some were used for waistcoats, others for the backs of waistcoats and – wait for it – travelling dressing gowns and of course exceptional linings. They would make the perfect linings for the wool coatings above to make an exceptionally expensive looking coat.b) Plain black taffeta with a dark brown reverse. This is made from black and brown yarns, not piece dyed. It is also quite substantial.d) Black and brown fine stripe in dull satine) French Navy with a textured weave patternf) Black Satin Stripe, not even stripes, small then big to create an optical effect.g) Beautiful silvery beige with stripes at 4.5 cm repeat.

REF: CM002 60” (152 cm) wide £4.40 per metre

✿✿ WAterprOOFsHere is a little selection of so called waterproof fabrics, apparently we are not able to call anything waterproof any more, since once you sew it you might alter the structure of the thing if the coating becomes impaired. Notwithstanding all else these are as near to waterproof as you will get and do repel water. All are 60” (152cm) widea) Lemonade – This is rather different to anything we have sold before. A very pale lime green polyester, lightweight canvas with a synthetic rubber backing. We only have 20mtrs. Will make wonderful kiddies rainwear, although it was, according to the place it came from, used for ladies rain-capes. Picture on front page.b) Hasslehoff – A pale olive/khaki extremely strong breathable treated polyester with an almost Barber like finish.c) Kit – A smooth backed polyester fabric in navy with a water repellent treatment to the other side. d) Knight Rider – Another softly sanded polyester canvas with a lightweight breathable water repellent coating to the reverse. This is a deep olive green.e) Revoyce – A densely woven but lightweight polyester in beige one side and a lovely rich but fairly pale gold on the other. There is also some black yarn used in this, on reflection I think it’s a membrane which will help with the windproofing and water repellency. Picture on backf) I will never forget Whatisname – A rare beast, a knitted polyester jersey with a woven polyester twill on the reverse in beige. This again appears to have a membrane between the two layers. A more substantial cloth than any of the others. All these have featured in a major, exclusive, expensive, brand of jackets costing well over £100.

REF: CM186 60” (152 cm) wide £6.00 per metre

✿✿ WOOl cOAting

I think it’s fair to say that there will not be a repeat as these cloths have been made in this country. What comes from abroad now I am not certain of but I do know that these mills are no longer in existence. So if you want to preserve a bit of history, do your bit. a) Black Watch – A 60” (152 cm) wide two-sided woollen coating. One the one hand it is plain navy; on the other side it is navy and green ‘Black Watch’ tartan plaid weave.b) Bright Spell – A 60” (152 cm) wide flannel wool coatings in a melange of many greens, producing a dark lime colour. Is this a cause for excitement or what? Beautiful cloth. Picture on cover.c) Orange Flannel – the same cloth as above but in bright Orange.d) Camel – A 60” (152 cm) wide, absolutely fabulous camel wool/nylon/cashmere coating. No certain of the exact percentages but they are likely to be 80% wool, 10% nylon and 10% cashmere. I know people tend not to go for overcoats these days, but people who want to be dressed nicely for their daily sojourn wears suits and in winter they wear an overcoat and you will not do better than this cloth wherever you go for the rest of your life. As the title suggests it is in a camel colour. £20.00 per metre. Now don’t fall over – the wholesale price is almost twice that.e) Dandy – 60” (152cm) wide, Suitably recovered I move on to a brown wool cloth coating weight which is in a herringbone weave on one side (a faint but wide herringbone weave) and on the reverse a plain but beautifully marl finished brown with other tones mixed in. This is in fact two cloths woven together. As clever as it comes and beautifully soft and just as expensive as the others. Picture on back page.f) Grey Flannel – A 60” (152 cm) wide pure new wool, medium weight flannel, definitely a coating weight but of a completely different character to the previous cloths just described. Another drop dead gorgeous cloth. Picture on back page.g) Brown Flannel – As above but in a dark, heathery infused brown.h) Navy Flannel – And as above but in navy bluei) Chequers – This is the last cloth for the moment in this particular conversation. A light fawn and camel oblong check on the one side with a brushed camel plain finish on the other. It has all been too much for me. Fabulous cloth.
