Welcome ...to our annual production sale. We have been breeding Red Angus seedstock for over 30 years. Our goal has always been low birth weight, easy-calving, highly maternal cows. We manage our cattle as a herd in a range environment with a “no excuses” rule.

We would like to welcome you to our annual production sale and treat you to coffee and sweets in the morning, lunch at noon, and an excel-lent offering of Red Angus cattle. We would offer any assistance you desire in understanding the information presented in this catalog and evaluating the bulls and females.

OUR GOAL: Produce functional cattle for our short grass, semi-arid environment, and provide honest value and service to our customers.

OUR PROGRAM: Our program is founded on a balanced-trait breeding model. The seedstock are managed in a range environment with moderate-framed cows bred for cowherd building traits with opti-mal growth and superior carcass traits while maintaining a no excuses culling criteria. If a cow can’t raise a calf every year in our environ-ment, they are culled from the herd. We do not chase extreme growth as the growth traits require extra inputs. This balanced-trait breeding model adds value through carcass quality, lower cow maintenance costs, and increased longevity of the females with the added benefi t of the accompanying “convenience traits.”

The cattle presented here are a result of a multi-generational commit-ment to quality. The cows are bred to work within our limited resourc-es, producing calves that excel at weaning, perform in the feedyard, and add value on the rail.

PROGENY EVALUATION: The Red Angus breed was founded on progeny testing and we believe in using all the tools available to increase selection accuracy. Calves from our cow herd stay on our ranch and are evaluated to end product, be it seedstock or feeder cattle.

Keeping contemporary groups of signifi cant size is one of the most important aspects of performance testing. We manage our cows to keep large contemporary groups. We use this large group data to select our replacements and bull candidates. After weaning, the groups are split into seedstock and feeder groups. The seedstock groups are evaluated with yearling weights, growth measurements, and ultrasound. The feeders all have yearling weights taken, and the real carcass data is identifi ed back to both the sire and the dam. This improves the genetic predictability of the cow herd.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: The bulls were developed on the ranch. After weaning the bulls are grazed out on pasture for a month and then fed a high quality roughage ration with a vitamin-mineral supplement to gain 3.25 lb/day on average. The bulls are kept in a large dry pen, which gives plenty of exercise. We do not target 1300 or 1400 lb yearling weights. The development program is designed for the bulls to make their own way on the range and hold up to the rigors of their fi rst breeding season.

HEALTH: The cow herd is vaccinated at Prebreeding time with PregGuard Gold FP 10. Precalving vaccinations are Vision 7, Clos-tridium Type A, Scour Bos 9, plus parasite control.

The heifers have had their branding, preconditioning, and weaning shots of 5 way BRD, Pasteurella, 7 -way Somnus, and a parasite control. They have had their Bangs vaccination, StayBred VL5, plus a Prebreeding exam & PregGuard Gold 10 FP. They are ready to breed!

Bulls are given the same calfhood vaccinations as the heifers, and re-cently a StayBred VL5. Dr. Shoemaker will Fertility Test all bulls and the results will be provided for each bull sold.

CATALOG INFORMATION: All EPDs, including carcass, have been updated to refl ect the latest performance data including Ultra-sound and 50K DNA GENOMIC PANELS. Percentile rankings are listed below the EPD table. The measurement data with their in-herd performance ratios are listed in a table just to the right of the pedigree. Scrotal measurements will be on a supplement sheet avail-able sale day and posted on our website as soon as fertility testing is completed.

We present all the data on all the bulls to make your selection easier and more complete!

Sale day announcements will take precedence over the catalog infor-mation.

Extended pedigrees can be seen on the Red Angus website (Re-dAngus.org). Enter the Reg. # in the table accessed by the “Animal Search” button.

SELECTION: We do supply all the raw measurement data and in-herd performance ratios; but when making your selections, more reliance should be put on the EPDs. The EPDs have already factored in each animal’s performance ratios, including the carcass ultrasound data, and 50K panels. To aid in your interpretation and application of the RAAA EPDs, the Red Angus Association has published “Ranch-ers Guide to EPDs.” You can get a brochure by calling the Associa-tion (940-387-3502). This is an excellent source of information and is worth requesting a copy. Of course we will help you interpret any of the information in this catalog.


SALE TERMS:• Animals are unconditionally guaranteed to be sound and to be breeders

for the fi rst breeding season. Bulls are guaranteed to have libido and heifers are guaranteed to cycle. We do not guarantee against injury or illness.

• Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the seller after the sale. Animals need to be picked up by April 15th.

• The bulls and heifers will have passed a Breeding Soundness exam.• Health papers will be provided by Dr. Shoemaker.• Free delivery of bulls for the fi rst 250 miles. After 250 miles delivery will

be charged at cost. Deliveries will be scheduled as soon after the sale as possible. We do not offer free delivery on heifers but will work with the buyer to arrange delivery if needed.

• A $50 credit will be given to purchasers who pick up their bulls by April 15th.

• A $50 credit will be given to purchasers of multiple bulls.• We will be retaining an interest in bulls we designate. They will be noted

in this catalog. Any semen collection is at buyer’s convenience. Buyer has full possession & full salvage value.

Since 2010, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the American Simmental Association (ASA) have combined their growth and carcass datasets to provide commercial producers with the most reliable EPDs in the beef industry. In the summer of 2012, RAAA and ASA adopted a common base for Growth (BW, WW, YW, Milk) and Carcass (MARB, YG, CW, REA, FAT) EPDs so that all animals registered in either RAAA or ASA can be directly compared – regardless of breed makeup.

What is BASE?For decades, each breed association has presented EPDs in their own language (the base). Base is no more than a reference point for any trait against which subsequent generations of animals are compared. The establishment of a base ensures that the population future generations are compared to remains stable, which allows the breed’s genetic trend to be accurately identifi ed.

Raw Genetic Value + Base Adjustment = Published EPD

Study Percentile Ranks ...Percentile ranks are an easy reference and therefore a powerful tool to assist you in becoming accustomed to the new multi-breed base. Red Angus EPD percentile ranks are presented along with all active animals’ EPDs, and reference how animals compare within their respective Red Angus subpopulations, i.e. Sire Summary Sires, Active Dams, Non-Parent Bulls, etc. It’s important to realize that although the multi-breed base allows for the direct comparison of Red Angus and Simmental EPDs, the percent ranks for Red Angus animals will continue to simply compare the genetics of Red Angus


animals against other Red Angus. Thus, an animal that was in the top 10% for growth under the old Red Angus base will still be in the top 10% for growth in the new Red Angus multi-breed base.

Example:In the past, you preferred to purchase bulls that had a -2.0 or lower BW EPD.

Since a -2.0 on the old RAAA base represented the top 20% for BW, you now need to use -2.7 as your critical selection threshold as that represents the top 20% for BW on the new multi-breed base.

They come from long time Croissant Red Angus customers, Lazy H Ranch and Bob Hill. Both are well managed operations with a focus on cowherd building traits without jeopardizing carcass merit.
