Flying Start Flying Start recommenced on Monday morning. Many

students were eager to come back to Flying Start after 3 weeks away. The students are excited to know that beginning ‘big school’ is getting closer. This week we completed a worksheet which looked at adult animals and their young. Students listened to the story ‘Time for bed’ then cut out the baby animals and pasted them next to the adult animal. This encouraged great discussion about what animals they have on their farm and other animals that they knew the young of. We look forward to seeing you all again next Monday morning from 9.30 until 11.00am.

Sophie and Remi have ‘gone fishin’ early on Monday

morning.

Leo Campbell is looking forward to ‘big school’ next year.

Billy Woods enjoyed manipulating the play dough during

activities.

Bronte Thorpe plays alongside other girls at the Barbie table.

Sophie and Tait like the feel of sand running through their

fingers.

Elouise looks forward to completing activities to show her

mum.

Kelsey Ann uses her cutting skills to cut around the baby

animals.

Carter cuts the baby animal out and glues it next to its

mother.

School Garden

Stage 2 has been back in the school garden this term, preparing the beds for spring plantings. Weeding, clearing and turning soil were all completed in the first week, and we are very grateful to the Skelly family for donating some beautiful garlic that we can begin planting next week. The students enjoy not only being outside but working in the garden in the natural environment.

Michael Foster enjoyed weeding the school garden.

Joe Stephenson enjoyed looking for bugs in the Bug Hotel.

The girls check the new bulbs sprouting.

Crookwell Car Club Donation Following the very successful Laggan Car Show earlier this year the Crookwell Car Club committee met recently and decided that they would like to give back to the community through generous donations. They decided that they would like to donate $1000 to Crookwell Public School to go towards our library refurbishment.

It is perfect timing as our library has had some major work completed such as removing some walls, fitting new cabinetry and shelving, all new desks and chairs, new laptop computers and the inclusion of a very comfy reading nook.

The library is a flexible learning space that all classes utilise for traditional browsing and borrowing of books but also for STEM activities, debating, Chess Club and public speaking.

The very generous donation from Crookwell Car Club will go towards the final piece of the refurbishment which is a new interactive television to replace the current interactive whiteboard.

We wish to congratulate the Crookwell Car Club on their very successful Laggan Car Show and thank the committee and its members for their very generous donation.

Michael Whittington is pictured receiving the cheque with

Crookwell Car Club secretary Dianne Layden and committee member Nathan Slattery.

Microbats in Crookwell Did you know there are several species of microbats living in Crookwell? Stage 2 had the pleasure of several microbat experts visit them this week and share their knowledge. Students learnt large numbers of facts about the importance of microbats in our environment. With the assistance of local farmer Vince, students now make connections between the benefits of bats to our farms. This talk was organised by local Landcare member Ruth and Stage 2 are very excited about our next Landcare activity.

Vince and bat experts Heather and Doug.

Students were thoroughly engaged as they learnt facts about

microbats in our area.

Developmental Play During Friday Fun afternoon, students had many activities to choose from. They made great use of our newly installed artificial turf by playing some outdoor hockey with soft padded sticks. This activity was very physical with a swap to play basketball as well. The hockey game was interesting to watch the excellent hand-eye coordination of the infants students. Other inside activities included; playing vets, board games, Lego, Flying Start play and Makey Makey.

Ollie Croker shows his dribbling skills during the hockey

game.

Lennon Osborne has great height for the game of basketball.

A hockey team photo to top off a great afternoon!

Book Fair

The Crookwell Public School book fair was held on Thursday in the library. We would like to thank the parents and students who supported our school by purchasing books. A special thanks to Jan Woods, Amanda Merryfull, Susan McIlroy, Audrie Osborne, Jodie Mackie and Heather Stanger and the dedicated teachers that volunteered their time to set up and hold the fair. Funds raised from the sales will go towards purchasing new quality books and resources for the school library.

Koa Pick, Kenzi Fowler and Georgie Robertson were

extremely happy with their purchases form the Book Fair this week.

Lennon Osborne was excited to share his new book with his

friends Jordan Tate and Alfie Haynes.

Fundraising for a great cause Year 5 student, Stirling Inder, loves animals, great and small, and has decided that it would be a great idea to raise some funds for the RSPCA through the RSPCA Cupcake Day. Stirling and his family are going to make delicious cupcakes that will be sold at school on Thursday 22

nd August.

The cupcakes can be purchased at recess and lunch for the low price of 50 cents per cake with all proceeds going to the RSPCA to assist in caring for animals in need.

For those of you who cannot make it to the cupcake stall you may still donate to this worthy cause by visiting https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/f/stirlinginder

Girls Touch Football On Thursday, 1

st August the Crookwell Girls Touch Football

team travelled to Yass to play against Berinba Public School. During the warm up, the girls sized up their opposition, ultimately deciding that Berinba were far too tall to beat. Coaches Liddy and Mrs Thorpe had big plans for the game. Some injuries and exhaustion saw those plans become quite flexible.

Crookwell managed to get an early lead on their opponent, with three early tries from Lillian S, Mackenzie G and Sophie W. What a start to a fantastic game! Berinba came back strong in the second half, with equal possession of the ball. Both teams defense was outstanding. Despite Berinba keeping Crookwell close to their goal line for the majority of the second half, Crookwell’s defense was able to keep them from scoring. Crookwell came away with a 6-2 win.

Congratulations to the girls for making it through to Round 4 of the NSW Schools Touch Football Knockout.

What a game! What a win! Every single player gave it 110%.

Winners are grinners!

Kindergarten News Topics News in Kindergarten recommenced this week with a roster and topic for each week. The aim of news is to foster speaking and listening skills. It is an activity that can be socially rewarding and academically advantageous for young children while also solidifying the home-school connection. The table below has the day your child has news. If your

child is unable to bring something to share, they are more

than welcome just to speak about the topic. Please do not

bring items of great sentimental or monetary value to school.

Infants’ Town Library Visit On Tuesday, infants students went for their first trip to the town library. Year 2 Platypus and Kindergarten received an introduction about how the library works and were given a fun activity to help familiarise them with the layout. Many students were surprised at the range of things the library offered and could not wait to go back. Next week, 1/2 Kangaroo and 1/2 Emu will have their turn. Waste Free Wednesday This week was our very first whole school Waste Free Wednesday and we have been very surprised with the enthusiasm from our students. Many students are getting on board with the program and brought terrific looking lunch boxes. Thank you to all parents and students who participated. We look forward to watching our waste habits improve! Students collect the data and look for patterns when they create graphs of waste production, including how many pieces of rubbish each student would have contributed per class. Well done to the Dingo and Koala Classrooms that have less than one piece of rubbish per student in their room!

Enrolling Now For 2020

If you know of families who will have children starting school at Crookwell Public in 2020 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Form promptly. This will

allow staffing arrangements for next year to be firmly in place by the commencement of the new academic year.

Families new to the school community are invited to contact the school on 48 321 213 to arrange an interview with Mr Whittington, meet the staff, tour the school and receive a Crookwell Public School Information package.

Thank you to the families who have already completed and submitted their child’s application to enrol.

Home and Emergency Contact Details The colder weather has now set in and the chance of having to evacuate the school due to heavy snow or extreme weather increases. It is important that we have current contact details in case of an emergency. If you have recently changed your mobile phone number, changed address or any other emergency contact details please contact the office and have these details updated as soon as possible.

Saving Lives and Money Unfortunately we had a near miss on the pedestrian crossing on Thursday morning. A parent parked on the pedestrian crossing blocking the view for other drivers and when a student was crossing the road on the crossing a car drove straight across in front of the student missing them narrowly. This could have ended in a tragic accident.

Staff and parents have recently noticed people stopping in the designated bus zone at the front of the school, parking in the driveways of neighbouring properties, parking incorrectly and stopping in the No Standing Zone that borders the Denison Street pedestrian crossing. Please refrain from doing such things and abide by the rules that govern these areas in order to avoid a hefty fine and help to protect the health and safety of our students. The local police have been notified and a stronger police presence to protect our children will be implemented.

It would be devastating to know that your actions resulted in a child being seriously injured or that your wallet was considerably lightened by a hefty fine.

I greatly appreciate your cooperation in these matters.

Stage 3 Ethics We welcome Ms Mandy McDonald to our school community as our new Stage 3 Ethics teacher. Ms McDonald has completed her training and will be joining us each Thursday morning to facilitate the ethics lessons with those Stage 3 students who have expressed that they would like to participate in those lessons. Congratulations Lillian! A big congratulations to Lillian Skelly who placed 29
