FROM OUR CHAIRThe last 16 months have been an exciting time at CROSH with a successful conference on Mental Health in the Workplace, establishment of a student internship program with community partners, and the official opening of the CROSH laboratory. On January 1, 2015 I took on a new role with CROSH and stepped down from the Director’s position. As the inaugural Research Chair in Occupational Health and Safety, I look forward to working more closely with the talented team of CROSH researchers and graduate students. Together we will continue to build partnerships with labour and industry to address stakeholder-driven research questions.

The opening of the CROSH laboratory in April was a proud moment for the CROSH research team and would not have happened without the leadership of the CROSH Advisory Board and commitment of our community partners. The laboratory will support training of student researchers and future leaders in occupational safety and health, it will serve as a meeting place for CROSH researchers and community partners to launch collaborative research discussions, and it will be a catalyst for the development of innovative research programs.

To continue to serve the research needs of our stakeholders, CROSH will host (or participate) in several community forums over the next 18-months. We want to hear from workers, industry leaders, community partners and YOU. What occupational health and safety issues need to be understood, evaluated and solved? I invite you to connect with CROSH: stop in to visit the CROSH lab on the Laurentian University campus, send us an email, follow us on twitter, and/or give me a call.

It is an exciting time to be affiliated with CROSH. I look forward to solidifying connections with existing community stakeholders and facilitating new partnerships as we work together to drive PREVENTION THROUGH RESEARCH.

Live well, work safe.

FROM OUR DIRECTORSince its founding, seven years ago, the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH) has continued to strive towards its mandate of improving workplace health and safety in northern communities. This year has been a pivotal one, as we recruited Dr. Tammy Eger to the position of Research Chair in Occupational Health and Safety, and we officially opened the CROSH Home Laboratory (H-CROSH)!

Dr. Eger is recognized by her peers as an international expert in vibration research and has done seminal work documenting whole-body vibration and foot-transmitted vibration exposure associated with surface and underground mining. She is an award-winning researcher who has led the field-to lab-to field (F2L2F) research paradigm that CROSH is becoming renowned for. Dr. Eger brings her knowledge, enthusiasm and passion to this position in a way that will elevate the research at CROSH to a new standard. Her connections to Northern Ontario, local politics, and her ability to bridge the gap between different levels of occupational health and safety management are impressive.

We are proud to celebrate the Centre’s ability to successfully meet our goals for 2015, including building our community partnerships, expanding our membership, extending our community outreach and increasing our reach both nationally and internationally.

As the new Director, I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such passionate and committed health and safety experts amongst both our esteemed Advisory Board and Executive Members. I look forward to getting to know all of the CROSH members and community partners as we continue to build a Research Centre renowned for its ability to solve relevant problems in northern workplaces and communities, through our mandate of F2L2F, Prevention through research.

I encourage you to contact me to discuss opportunities within the Centre.

SAFETY & HEALTH TOGETHER!

OUR PR  OGRAMS SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN CONSTRUCTION

The purpose of this program is to determine whether there is a mismatch between the visibility perceptions of the heavy equipment operators and pedestrians in the work environment. The research team will compare measured line-of-sight in the machines, with the perception of line-of-sight from both operators and pedestrians and determine whether there is a mismatch in the understanding of heavy equipment machinery. CROSH researchers will also administer a survey to evaluate whether the perceived risk of working around heavy equipment differs for different types of employees (drivers, pedestrians, signal people). CROSH will evaluate how a variety of existing reversing technologies change the way an operator drives his/her machine on site while monitoring cognitive load and physiological response variables. The overall goal in collaboration with participating workplace partners is the prevention of mobile equipment accidents involving pedestrians and other equipment.

OUR PROGRAMS MENTAL HEALTH & WORKER WELLBEING

CROSH researchers are studying mental health in the workplace and its relationship with accidents/injury, absenteeism, presenteeism and return to work. In doing so, researchers intend to advance our understanding of job stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and work engagement. The links between physical activty, leisure, and work-life/family life balance and occupational mental health are also being investigated. The CROSH team will offer particular attention to these issues as they relate to rural/northern workforces, with a view of informing interventions and guiding evidence-based workplace policies/procedures.

OUR PR  OGRAMS VIBRATION

The vibration research team studies occupational exposure to whole-body, hand-arm and foot-transmitted vibration. Building off previous research, which has documented vibration exposure characteristics associated with increased health risks, the research team is currently focused on interventions aimed at exposure reduction. The team is evaluating the benefits of using an iPod Touch with an iOS application (developed to enable whole-body vibration measurement) as part of a vibration management system. Field-testing is currently being conducted to determine if increased awareness of daily vibration exposure is beneficial in the determination and implementation of targeted control strategies. The team is also evaluating the benefits of specific combinations of personal protective equipment (mats, boots, insoles) for workers exposed to foot-transmitted-vibration when operating underground mining equipment. Lab results were promising and field trials have started.

OUR PROGRAMS

FATIGUE

CROSH is committed to taking a comprehensive approach in understanding factors relating to fatigue and recovery in the workplace. Factors may include, but are not limited to, physical activity intensity, nutritional practices, work physiology, energy balance, environmental and occupational stressors, sleep quantity and quality, and psychological health and safety. Our group seeks to collaborate with organizations in identifying and measuring the main factors and their subsequent impact on health and occupational outcomes in their respective workplaces. Central to this research area is a broadening of our understanding of the interaction between these and other confounding factors as they influence workplace illness and injury in order to develop resources, strategies and interventions aimed at preventing future injuries.

2015/2016 INITIATIVES

2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT

WORKPLACE SIMULATION LAB

CROSH is seeking funding to integrate a robotic platform (vibration and motion) and an environmental chamber (temperature, humidity) with an immersive virtual reality experience. CROSH will be the first lab in Canada with the infrastructure to replicate work conditions associated with ultra deep mining, and will also be able to simulate work conditions associated with equipment operation in forestry, construction and forest fire fighting.

MOBILE RESEARCH LAB

CROSH is seeking funding to develop a Mobile Research Lab to enhance research capacity and collaborate with northern industry and communities. Mobile-CROSH (M-CROSH) will be the first mobile lab in Canada equipped to simultaneously carry out field research in Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE), Occupational Health and Wellness (OHW), and Occupational Physiology and Environment (OPE).
