Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life

O God, throughout the ages you have called

women and men to pursue lives of perfect

charity through the evangelical counsels of

poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this

Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks

for these courageous witnesses of Faith and

models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives

teaches us to make a more perfect offering of

ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church

by calling forth sons and daughters who, having

found the pearl of great price, treasure the

Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through

our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and

reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever. Amen

Lent is a time when many Christians prepare

for Easter by observing a period of fasting,

repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline.

The purpose is to set aside time for reflection

on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his

sacrifice, his life, death, burial and

resurrection.

Vision Statement The Tekakwitha Conference is the Voice, Presence and Identity of Indigenous Catholics of North America under the protection and

inspiration of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.

Our Mission Statement We, as members of the Tekakwitha Conference inspired by Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, a young, Mohawk/Algonquin woman of the 17th century, renew our faith and reaffirm our baptismal call as followers of Jesus to proclaim the Good News. We pray with faith and hope for the continued intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in the lives of Indigenous Peoples.

We strive to:

† Reinforce Catholic identity † Affirm pride in our cultures and spiritual traditions † Promote healing through forgiveness and reconciliation † Advocate for peace and justice in our Indigenous communities † Build stronger catechesis that is meaningful to Indigenous Catholic People † Nurture the relationship between Indigenous people and the

Catholic Church † Empower Catholic Indigenous People as leaders within our

communities and Church

2014-2015 Tekakwitha Conference Members and Friends, Live the joy of the Gospel in 2015!

In Pope Francis’ encyclical, Evangelii Gaudiuum each of us is being challenged to ‘joyfully proclaim the Gospel to the entire world’.

As members of the Tekakwitha Conference, we as a Church are called to share this Christian joy. There are a number of significant events during this year that can lead us, as Pope Francis states, to “new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come”.

We have many invitations and occasions for reflection and prayer during 2015: The Year of Consecrated Life; the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this September; the upcoming Season of Lent beginning in February; the success of our 76th Annual Tekakwitha Conference in July for the Gathering of All Nations as ‘Saint Kateri Embraces the Wetlands’.

During 2015, together let us pray for vocations to religious consecrated life and priesthood and to build strong family bonds centered around Christ. A call to follow Christ as a Sister, Brother, Priest or as a lay leader comes from the family. May our prayer be to encourage family members to personally respond to a life/ministry of service to the Church and “joyfully proclaim the Gospel” to family, to community and to the whole world. May God’s many blessings be yours throughout the year as you walk a path for a closer relationship with our gracious and generous Creator God. Through the intercession of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha may you be guided, inspired and protected on your spiritual journey. Sister Kateri Mitchell,

Saint Kateri Prayer

By: Harold Caldwell

O Saint Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks,

Your love for Jesus, so strong,

so steadfast, grant that

we may become like you.

Your short and painful life showed us

your strength and humility.

Grant that we may become forever

humble like you.

Like the bright and shining stars at night,

we pray that your light may forever shine

down upon us, giving light,

hope, peacefulness and serenity

in our darkest moments.

Fill our hearts, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

with your same love for Jesus

and grant us your strength and courage

to become one like you in Heaven.

Amen.

Basic Directions in Native Ministry

June 1- 8, 2015 Sioux Spiritual Center, Howes, South Dakota

A seven-day institute for personnel who are beginning or are wanting to learn more about Native American ministry will be held at the Sioux Spiritual Center in Howes, South Dakota. The institute is sponsored by the National Tekakwitha Conference. It will begin with supper on Monday, June 1, 2015, at 6:00 PM (Mountain Daylight Time) and end on Monday, June 8, at 11:00 AM, with departures to the Rapid City airport after lunch.

There will be 31 hours of class work associated with the workshop. Speakers will cover topics that include missiology, anthropology, liturgy, catechetics, collaborative ministry, Native culture and religion, and principles of recovery using AA. Native speakers involved in catechetics, parish administration, and youth ministry will discuss their work. Although the institute will take place in a Lakota setting, it will develop basic principles of inculturation that can be used in approaching any culture.

Space is limited. Enrollment will be closed after 22 people who apply have been accepted. The cost for the institute is $800.00. This includes room (double occupancy), meals, and materials. Double occupancy means that you can expect to have a roommate. Rooms are air-conditioned.

A $50.00 deposit is required with the application along with a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s pastor or supervisor. The letter must provide information on the applicant’s current or future ministry with Native people. The deposit is non-refundable after May 1.

Airport shuttle service will only be available at these times: pickup ONLY on Monday afternoon, June 1. Please schedule your flight to arrive at Rapid City Regional Airport between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The return to the airport is ONLY on Monday, June 8 (schedule your departing flight no earlier than 1:00 PM). The cost of the round-trip shuttle service – in addition to tuition – is $50.00, payable in advance or upon arrival at the Center.

New Mexico- The Ohkay Owingeh Kateri Circle, together with Santa Clara Pueblo has been busy evangelizing to the young people of

their reservations. They have made it their mission to host bi-monthly activities for the young people and their families to come

together and learn more about their catholic faith through fun filled evenings. Evangelization kicked off with “In Her Footsteps

Film- Life of Kateri Tekakwitha”; Movie Night that brought in more than 150 attendees. A root beer float social was a hit, where

everyone learned more about the Life of St Kateri Tekakwitha and everyone in attendance made their very own Tekakwitha wooden

cross. An All Saints Social and pumpkin carving contest was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn more about the lives of the

saints and have fun doing it. Prizes were given to the best Saint Costumes and best pumpkin carvings. Advent will have a special touch

as the group comes together to make advent wreaths and learn about this special season. The Ohkay Owingeh / Santa Clara Kateri

Members are evangelization pioneers, the first circles in NM to host such events.

Kateri Youth 2015 Annual Tekakwitha Conference in Alexandria, LA

My name is Mary Ann Reddoch and I am the youth coordinator for 2015 Conference.

Things to think about:

1. I am inviting all youth to send in a short story about yourself

2. If you are artistic – art, music, dance - you may include whatever you would like to share during the conference. Some of the

workshops will help you build on your interests.

3. What are you doing in your community to promote caring for Mother Earth?
