Child Care Provided

Dear friends, A story is told of a mother and her son age 5, who went to a shopping mall to buy a toy for the son’s birthday. As soon as the child selected that little toy, which was not only a bit expensive but rather appeared to be a little complex and compli-cated, the mother curiously asked the clerk at the counter to explain the working of it and she said “Mam this is an educa-tional toy to help the child adjust to life in this modern world. For no matter how he puts it together it will be wrong”. Our world today is changing faster than the world of Stone Age, agrarian age, industrial age, technological age, space and information age. Every year we have new economic theories, new insights on clinical and psychological understanding of the human personalities. What is new in our understanding of religion and spirituality? How can we interpret the ancient metaphors and myths and imageries meaningfully for our modern times? How can we enter God’s heart in today’s world? asks Marcus Borg in his book ”The Heart of Christianity”. How can we practice truth and do justice in a world with confus-ing ideologies and misguiding politicians?

This is the time of the year we study in detail as to why Jesus turned his face towards Jerusalem, talked about his cross and met his final death?.How do we understand the meaning of cross today? Do we know why exactly Jesus was put to death on a cross? How do we become a cross-friendly congregation? What is the heart of Christianity?

Koinonia Corner Koinonia is a term referring to the expression of Christian love among believers, considered to be more than friend-ship, and based on the believer’s primary relationship to Jesus Christ. May we be in a spirit of koinonia as we pray for these people and situations.

Laughter, discussion, chocolate sampling and bever-age will be part of the evening.

INEQUALITY FOR ALL INEQUALITY FOR ALL from Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor comes a humorous and enlightened expose on America’s widening income gap. You are invited to a screening of this film Sunday, March 23 at 6pm, in Fellowship Hall.

Our choirs are busy rehearsing music for the upcoming liturgical seasons. Would you like to sing with Chancel Choir on a short-term basis for part of Lent and Easter? It would involve coming to rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm, starting March 12. Let me know if you are interested! (223-9560 or [email protected])

I’ve been asked to give a 40 minute recital at Central Presbyterian Church (31 Center Street, Geneseo). It will be on Tuesday, April 8 at 12 noon. All are welcome to attend! The church has a series of recitals each spring, and mine will be the last in the series this year. There is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted. The organ at Central Presbyterian was rebuilt by Parsons Organ Builders in 2002, and now has 3 manuals and 38 ranks of pipes. (Parsons is the same company that rebuilt our organ in 1997 – ours has 2 manuals and 28 ranks of pipes.) I will post a flyer and di-rections for the recital on the music bulletin board.

The Sunday music schedule for March is:

If you have any questions about our music ministry, please contact me at 223-9560 or [email protected].

Pledge Drive Results and Plan for 2014 Pastoral SupportPledge Drive Results and Plan for 2014 Pastoral Support

Listed below is the update regarding the year ending 2013 financial status, results of the 2014 Pledge campaign, the 2014 budget and the plan for pastoral support in 2014 and 2015 that was presented to the Congregation dur-ing the February 9 services:

As expected, pledged giving in December was strong as many completed their 2013 pledges, but what was unex-pected was the high level of Advent donations. The unexpectedly high level of Advent giving combined with the earlier high level of Lent donations, coupled with year-long under-running of budgeted expenses, resulted in a 2013 year ending operating budget surplus of $10,300. Combined with an over $7000 surplus from 2012 that was never appropriated in 2013, the Operating Fund now has a surplus of around $20,000.

As you may recall, the pledge campaign's goal was to achieve at least a 7% increase in pledges over 2013 so that we could financially support a second full-time pastor. Unfortunately we did not achieve that goal. While we did gain 28 new pledgers, we did not hear from 38 prior pledgers so there was drop of 10 pledgers for 2014. And while there were a large number of year to year increases in pledged amounts, a number of pledges did remain the same.

As a consequence, we will be operating under a deficit budget in 2014. So, while we cannot support two full-time pastors for 2016 and beyond at the present level of giving, the unexpectedly large surplus from 2013 and some possible new efforts will enable us to support 2 full-time pastors in the short term.

Finance Team

Greetings from SPRC! Greetings from SPRC! SPRC stands for Staff Parish Relations Committee which serves as the Hu-

man Resources group of the church and we would like to update our congregation on some recent decisions and changes.

In January 2014, we said Thank You to outgoing SPRC Chairperson David Ferrell and elected Vicki Deady & Gary McGregor as the new chairpersons. Please feel free to email Vicki at [email protected] or Gary at [email protected] if you have any questions or observations regarding our staff. Our committee consists of Brenda Deever, Sue Golembeski, Karen Felgenhour, Mark Kurz, Peg Albright, Stephanie Anderson and Karl Burkhardt. Tom Deever sits on the committee by virtue of his role as Lay Person to Annual Conference. Many of our committee members serve as a liaison to staff persons as follows:

Nicole Camillieri Music Director Stephanie Anderson Kathy Harris Office/Business Administrator Brenda Deever Pam Renfro Youth Ministry Director Karen Felgenhour Stacy Young Children's Ministry Director Sue Golembeski Lisa Radford Custodian Peg Albright Sinnathamby Thevanesan (Theva) Associate Pastor Gary McGregor Margaret Scott Pastor Vicki Deady

Much of our recent work has focused on understanding the needs of our congregation regarding pastoral support. At the January Church Council meeting, upon the recommendation of SPRC, the group voted to move forward to secure an appointment of a second full-time pastor beginning July 1, 2014. District Superintendent Ted Anderson has been alerted and will bring our request to the Bishop and the Cabinet. We are very excited regarding this time of transition for our church and hope that you will join us in prayer for God's will in their selection of our next pastor.

Many will remember Alli as the director of Safe Journey. Safe Journey is now a program of RESOLVE, and the merger did not interrupt Safe Journey's operations. They continue providing direct counseling, support groups, empowerment programs, fi-nancial counseling and the furniture program (of which Jane tucker has been an instrumental part). The merger did strengthen our prevention education programs significantly. We now have programs for adults, youth and colleges, as well as programs that specifically engage "good guys" in the prevention of violence against women. Join us March 2 and bring a dish to pass!

Your 50/50 Outreach Donations at Work

One Great Hour of Sharing donations enable UMCOR to serve children, families, and communities when disaster strikes. One Great Hour of Sharing, celebrated 3/30/14, calls United Methodists to share the goodness of life with those who hurt. The offering provides administrative support for the United Method-ist Committee on Relief as it responds to disaster sur-vivors and people in need around the world. Your GIFT GIVES LIFE - Everyone arriving June 2, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Moore, OK, found the church lacked electricity. They didn't need it. For almost two weeks, the church had charged into the chaos caused by a tornado May 20. Two dozen people died. Thousands of homes were gone. When another round of deadly tornadoes struck May 31, church members kept giving and serving even without electricity and water. With your support, First United Methodist Church in Moore, OK, continues as a long-term UMCOR recovery center.

Worship Team Worship Team is updating our policies and proce-

dures for handling a medical emergency in our church, espe-cially during Worship services. To that end, we have two re-quests: First, if you are a medical professional such as a physician, nurse practitioner, nurse, or EMT, please provide your name and phone number to Nancy Hoffman who will be updating the list that is kept in the kitchenette.

Second, we would like all medical professionals to notify the ushers of their presence when they come to a Worship ser-vice. In the event of an emergency, it will be very helpful for the ushers to know immediately who is available to provide assis-tance.

Fairport UMC Fairport UMC Community ReadCommunity Read and and Lenten Simple SupperLenten Simple Supper SeriesSeries

In January Fairport UMC ears were treated to a special speaker – Reverend Ann Kemper! Ann attended the UMM and UMW hosted potluck where she shared her journey. It was inspiring!

During Ann’s talk she shared the titles of 2 books that she states

contributed significantly to her journey from suburban staff member to her current role as pastor in an urban setting. She suggested that everyone would benefit from reading them. We have decided to do as Ann suggested!

The first title Ann suggested is What Every Church Mem-ber Should Know about Poverty by Bill Ehlig and Ruby K. Payne Phd. Beginning on Wednesday, March 12 and for the next 4 weeks we will gather at church at 6pm for a Simple Supper (hosted by Reach Workcampers and their families) and discussion of our reading for the week. The entire book is 125 pages with each chapter being an easy read. Our discussion will be informed by our reading but anyone wanting to attend who is not reading will be able to join in. The discussion will be appropriate for youth 6th grade and up. We will have activities for younger children in an adjacent room.

Books have been ordered at a cost of $20 each. There is a Kindle edition available for $9.99 and Nook edition avail-able for $14.99. There will be a free will offering collected each evening, for the meal, to benefit our Reach Work-camp costs.

There is a sign-up to purchase books on the Learning Opportunities bulletin board – across from the church office.

The second book suggested by Ann is Toxic Charity by Robert Lupton. We will schedule a similar discussion series for this book as well if there is interest in doing so.

PLACES OF CONFLICT: PLACES OF CONFLICT: We continue to keep in our prayers those serving in places of conflict. Known to have a connection with

our household of faith at this time are:

Brent Ashley, Scott Williamson, Andrew and Liz Davnie-Easton

(son and daughter-in-law of Mary Easton) Brandon Luckey (fiancé of Mel Marsters)

Pedro Richardson (friend of the Gordons) Ryan (family member of the Knowles)

If you have a name to add to our ongoing prayer list for those serving overseas, notify Margaret or Kathy.
