• Describe what alcohol alternative programming is and how it addresses issues related to binge drinking on campus.

• Discuss how to engage students in the assessment of campus and community health related initiatives.

Up Late at State History

• Mission

– “The Up Late at State initiative is to help students find

their way at Illinois State by providing late night,

alcohol-free events for students to participate in on the

weekend. Programs are late night, high impact, diverse,

and open to all Illinois State students.”

• Created in 2011

• Currently in 4th year

• Provide programming during the late night (8pm – 1am), weekend hours (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) for undergraduate students as an alternative to binge drinking

• Be a contributing factor in the reduction of off-campus alcohol violations

• Be a contributing factor in reduction of alcohol related property destruction

• Regularly attract new students as first-time attendees to Up Late events

Data Trends 2011 – 2014 Results:

• More females than males

• Freshmen attend a greater amount of events than any other class

• Casino Royale tends to attract the most diverse population

• Ethnicity trends: Caucasian then African American

• On campus attendees 60%, compared to 40% off campus

• If not attending Up Late event: Majority of students would stay at home

• Students attend approximately 3 up late events at surveying

• Most do not consume liquor before or after attending

• Casino Royale attendees have the most alcohol consumption

• Draw of giveaways, activities & food all tend to receive the same number of responses

Goals as a result of trends

Liquor Law Violations: The violation of laws or ordinance prohibiting: the manufacture, sale, transporting, furnishing, possessing of intoxicating liquor; maintaining unlawful drinking places; bootlegging; operating a still; furnishing liquor to minor or intemperate person; using a vehicle for illegal transportation of liquor; drinking on a train or public conveyance; all attempts to commit any of the aforementioned. (Drunkenness and driving under the influence are not included in this definition.)
