Teaching Thanksgiving in the Midst of a Pandemic?

“In everything, give thanks.” How do we as parents, grandparents and people who love chil-dren model this attitude of gratitude in a world of rising viral numbers, isolation, and Zoom fatigue? As a committee, we have been struggling with how best to provide the educational opportuni-ties and yet keep the best health safety requirements. We have posted online resources for families to use and have provided Bibles and literature to supplement these online resources. We know that everyone is tired of Zoom and yet we want to make sure that our children are learning the Bible stories. The challenge of having in- person events and the social distancing requirements is enormous for both the volunteer teachers and the students. How do we give thanks? We are thankful for faithful parents, grandparents and people who love children who are modeling the love of Jesus. We are thankful for a praying and caring congregation that is seeking God’s wisdom as we plan for the Christian education of our chil-dren. Where do we go from here? We go with thanksgiving, knowing that God is in charge and that He is the giver of Wisdom. Please do know that we are interested in providing help as you offer Christian education to the children you love. Please do contact us, if we can assist you with obtaining resources and please stay tuned—we hope to have new options soon. Most of all, GIVE THANKS.

A Note from Tyler

The month of October has been a wonderful representation of God’s faithfulness in the life of

LPC. Following his sermon and introduction on October 4th, pastoral candidate, Cameron

Shaffer, was unanimously called by the congregation to become the next pastor of Langhorne

Presbyterian Church. The unanimous nature of Cameron’s calling truly reflects the unity within

our congregation and reveals our excitement to submit to Cameron’s leadership and shepherd-

ing as he seeks to lead us in light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. While the details are still being

worked out for Cameron’s start date with denominational logistics through the EPC, we are ex-

cited to prepare for Cameron’s arrival along with his wife Lauren, their son Matthias, and baby

Evangeline, who is due in November. Please continue to pray for Cameron and his family as

well as for our congregation during this time of transition.

September’s Monthly Giving

September income was 78% of budget. Year to date giving is at 85% of budget, a shortfall of $67,000. Full year costs for the General Fund are 90% of budget. This reflects reduced spend on programs and reduced costs for the Pastor position and originally budget-ed relocation activities.

On-Line Giving for LPC is now available. This is another way to provide finan-

cial support to Langhorne Presbyterian Church and its programs. Link to contributing: https://abundant.co/langhornepres/give Link for more giving information and instructions: https://www.langhornepres.org/give/

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For

God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

- 1 Thessalonians 5:8-11

LPC Youth started a new series this past month working our way through 1st and 2nd Thessalonians! Jesus has given us an opportunity to live with him and one day, he will return to take us home! This has been the focus of our study recently as a youth program. It contin-ues to be encouraging week after week while students are adjusting to this new season of life, knowing very little about what their near and far future will look like. In the midst of the un-known, praise Jesus that we can put our hope in the future he has planned for us! We are also praising him as we have been allowed to meet together every week this month without weather cancelations! Woohoo! And thanks to one of our Seniors (Peter Nowak) we now get to enjoy a new GaGa Pit!

Along with praising God with us, there are also multiple ways you can be praying for

LPC Youth. You can continue to pray for us to use wisdom while we move forward planning our meetings in the winter months. Also, be praying that we can find some local and safe fa-cilities to use when the cold weather keeps us from meeting outside. And lastly, continue to pray for the safety of our students and their families. Thank you so much for your prayer and support! Eric Jacobs LPC Youth Director

Food Desperately Needed!

“When you reap your harvest in your field, and forget a sheaf in the field,

you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless,

and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of

your hands. When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the

boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.

When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it af-

terward; it shall be for the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow.”

- Deuteronomy 24: 19-21

Deacons are ordained for service. Two of the main service ministries of the Board of Deacons involve feeding the hungry. Caring for Friends provides meals to homebound and medically compromised seniors, children, and families across the five counties of Greater Philadelphia. They currently have a great need for prepared meals. If you are cooking and have leftovers you would like to share with those without adequate food, please pick up containers at the back entrance of the church. Fill them and freeze them and return them to the church. They will be delivered to those in need. The Deacons Food Pantry is the second ministry that helps to feed the hungry. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of clients has steadily grown, while during the same time period the dona-tions from the congregation have dropped. As a consequence, our church’s most visible ministry to our neighbors is in dire need. Below is a list of staple items that are always low in the pantry. If you are able, please add one or two to your regular grocery shopping and bring to the back entrance of the church where there are boxes for your donations. Thank you and God bless you! “The funds LPC sent this month were a blessing and a MIRACLE”

Recently the Mission Committee received a generous anonymous gift. Part of the gift was directed to spe-cific LPC mission partners, and a portion was to be used as needed. At our September Mission Committee meeting it was decided that $5,000 would be sent to Pat & Yesenia Opperman. Their “boots on the ground” ministry is quite amazing. They bring Christian love and the Good News of Jesus Christ to the most needy in the outskirts of Guatemala City. They live on a very tight budget and stretch their personal and ministry funds as far as they can go. We told them to use the funds as needed. On September 24 we received the following email from Pat:

“I narrowly avoided a heart attack this week. I was already in the middle of a

slow motion cardiac workup by my regular cardiologist due to episodes of chest

pain on exertion.

But this week, the attacks got worse and more frequent. Yesterday, I was

resting and the worst of the episodes happened.

Long story short, we went to our regular emergency room. They found my

EKG changed since just last week. They sent me to a relatively modern cardiac

center where I just returned to my room after a cardiac cath.

They cleared a 95% blockage in the biggest vein- affectionately called, The Wid-

ow Maker- and gave me a stent.

Doctor says I have a new heart. I can not believe how good I feel already.

So I will be better than ever. I am supposed to take it easy for a week, not

because of the heart, but to make sure the artery they used to enter is

healed.

The mission continues. Nothing was cancelled. Yesenia and my in-laws have

things under control. They even delivered groceries to La Cuchilla folks today.

Most importantly, I was slacking for awhile... but I will be back stronger than

ever next week.

Timing is everything. The funds LPC sent this month were a blessing and a

MIRACLE. The only way I was able to say we could afford to have the cath at

a private hospital was knowing that donation was sitting in the bank. Things

might have gone very differently otherwise.

Thank you all for your awesome support!”

We have had some experience with the public hospitals in Guatemala. The facili-ties are no where near the standards of most countries. If the funds had not been available it would have been weeks before Pat was approved for the procedure, if he was approved at all. The LPC funds allowed him to receive prompt treatment at a private hospital. Thank you to all the donations you make to support our LPC mission partners. Be-cause of you they do awesome work for the Lord. Your LPC Mission Committee

Thank you!

On behalf of Choice One I would like to thank everyone who donated to their baby shower

supplies. Supplies were getting low due to the pandemic because collections that usually occur

were not able to happen. Since Choice One has opened up to onsite visits showers are happening

again and women who had their babies during our closure are receiving gifts. Your donations

helped us to make this happen. Thank you again for your support.
