Dialogue, Jan.-Mar., 2019 3

We are, what we think and see through our minds and hearts of

ourselves, of others and God. So our inner sight

determines our behaviour.

The Provincial Speaks...

Sight and Foresight

T SEEMS seven men went through a field, one after another. One was a

farmer, he saw only the grass; the next was an astronomer, he saw the horizon and the stars; the physician noticed the standing water and suspected malaria; he was followed by a soldier who glanced over the ground, found it easy to hold, and saw in a moment how the troops could be disposed; then came the geologist, who noticed the boulders and the sandy soil; after him came the real estate broker who pondered how the line of the house-lots should run, where would be the drive-way, and the stables. Then came the poet who admired the shadows cast by some trees, and still more the music of some thrushes and meadow lark.

Most people see only what they want.

As per the dictionary 'sight' is the ability to see or the act of seeing. It is said that the higher we go the clearer is the sight. That is the reason we often speak of the 'eagles eye' for the eagles fly high and they have a clearer vision of things on earth.

It is said that we are,

what we think and see through our minds and

hearts of ourselves, of others and God. So our inner sight determines our behaviour. Zacheus climbed on a tree to have a clearer sight of Jesus and that has changed his life. It was a new physical and inner sight for him. 'New Sight' therefore is the expanded vision of ourselves and others through vast observational networks and breakthroughs. When we

are open to new sight, we slowly move on to become people with 'foresight'. And what therefore is this 'foresight'? It is the depth perception of the significance and nature of events before they occur. It is also the ability to make a judgment before the event happens. Dictionary defines 'foresight' as knowledge or insight or vision gained in the process of our looking forward.

In order to develop our

foresight that would enable us to make the right decisions,

we need to be clear on our vision, for which we need to ask the right questions to the right people, develop multiple options, embrace technology, hire people who think differently, ready to learn from adversity and to be a constant learner. A clear positive vision is important, but we need to develop a keen foresight to make qualitative and great decisions that would turn our vision into a reality.

Dear Brothers, we as

leaders and animators in the communities, Institutions and the people we are involved with, we need to develop this skill of seeing clearly what is happening around us, a vision and foresight to achieve our goals. We are trying to revive the News Letter 'Dialogue' to share with the Brothers of the Province what is happening in our communities/ Institutions and the new insights that we have gained and the vision and foresight we have to achieve the goals. I request all of you to make it a successful activity to energize and motivate each one of us.

Editor’s Message

EING ABLE to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It is what enables us to pass information to

other people, and to understand what is said or written to us. You only have to watch a baby listening intently to its mother and trying to repeat the sounds that she makes to understand how fundamental the urge to communicate is.

Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring information from one place to another. It may be vocally (using voice), written (using printed or digital media such as books, magazines, News Letters, websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language, gestures and the tone and pitch of voice). In practice, it is often a combination of several of these.

As our career progresses, the importance of communication skills increases; the ability to speak, listen, question and write with clarity and conciseness are essential for those in charge and leaders. In our personal life, good communication can improve our personal relationships by helping us to understand others, and to be understood.

Communication can also ensure that we are able to manage interactions with our Brothers, our staff, children, parents and different organizations. Communication is a three way process. It requires speaking, listening and writing.

We are all made of memories and experiences. Half of what we are is determimned by them. The things that happen today in our families, communities and the institutions are the memories and experiences of tomorrow. Whenever we invest any kindness, any encouragement, any sympathy and compassion it is a lifetime investment. It will yield rich dividents all throughout our life. The

quality of our memories and experiences determines the quality of our vision and perception of life that shows our behaviour. If the memories and experiences are very positive, it gives us a lot of energy and impetus to go ahead in life and to improve our behaviour.

Some memories and experiences happen but others need to be planned. Thererfore it is important to plan things because they keep playing as memories in mind and heart always.

They need to be communicated effectively to ourselves, to the world and people around us. The News Letter 'DIALOGUE', is a planned media through which we share our positive memories and experiences at the personal level and in our communities, institutions and in the area of our different missions with our Brothers, particularly in the Province so that they would enhance our vision, perception of ourselves, our Brothers, students, parents and the world around us. That would encourage us, give new insight and give new energy and motivate us to go ahead with enthusiasm and courage.

The last issue of the 'Dialogue' was published an year back before Bro. T.T. Mathew moved out from Bhopal to Sardhana. Most of us feel the absence of this News Letter and so Bro. Provincial has requested me to revive the same, if possible. I have accepted this request after much hesitation as I have not done this job earlier. I am confident that we can publish it regularly with your cooperation and support. Your suggestions are most welcome to make it really an excellent media to create better understanding and relationship in the Province.

I take this opportunity to thank Bro. T.T. Mathew and Bro. John Bosco assisted by Mrs. Usha for taking all the trouble to publish the 'Dialogue' regularly for the last many years.

Few students also got prizes for the full attendance in the class.

31st of January, saw all the staff, students and both the Brothers Jeet Francis and Gregory in all smiles. The welcoming and wishing well programmes presented by the students were excellent. All the students were served delicious lunch after the cultural programme. In the evening the staff and local communities of parish convent and nearby villages were invited for the Eucharist and dinner. We all are looking ahead to host this year’s Board exams successfully and expecting excellent results.

Montfort, Ambikapur Bro. Gabriel Lakra

Ever since Bro. Bosco left the editorship of the well appreciated newsletter “THE DIALOGUE”, this could be our first contribution to it. We put on record a note of thanks to both the former editors namely Bro. John Bosco and Bro. T.T. Mathew for their excellent work. At the same time we wish all the best to the present editor Bro. Jose Thottiyil. Since then a number of events and activities have taken place in Montfort Ambikapur. To enumerate a few could be, the starting of a boarding for the boys in the school. Due to the G.S.T. the “Montfort Vocational Training Centre” had to be closed down. The hostel of the M.V.T.C. was renovated and the boarding boys are lodged there. At present the strength of the boarders is 36 in all. The demand is for more.

Another thing could be of interest to the Brothers is the construction of a well furnished shed for the school buses towards the eastern side of the school building, which was a vacant place. A beautiful parking space for cycles is coming up near the third gate of the school at the east end. A podium is being erected near the basketball court to install a life size statue of Montfort. It will give a good look as we enter the school premise. The latest facility provided to the students in the school is “The Language Lab.” The foundation for the boarding building is shortly to be laid and the work for the same will be started thereof. Lot of winter flowers adorn the community garden and they are eagerly waiting to welcome the visitors. Bro. Manoj Hembrom is a new member in the community. He is looking after the boarding.

M. Bhawan, Sardhana Bro. T.T. Mathew

In the month of October we had three days of

retreat for the candidates. It was animated by Bro. Alex Diamond Raj. We appreciated his inputs. He was able to come down to the level of the candidates. We are thankful to him for his sessions and accompaniment.

At the end of November, Akhil Nixon had fractured two of his toes while playing football. His leg had to be plastered and he was totally dependent on others for everything. At the request of his parents he was sent home for two months. He returned on 20th Jan. His leg has become almost normal; however not fit enough to resume football.

In the first week of December the candidates and the boarders of St. Charles’ had a combined picnic to Delhi. Besides seeing some of the historical places of Delhi, we visited Montfort School, Ashok Vihar. Our lunch was sponsored by Bro. T. Alex, the LS and Principal of Montfort School. We are grateful to Bro. T. Alex and Bro. Jinu Abraham for this kind gesture.

As a preparation for Christmas we had the opportunity to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We celebrated the birth of Jesus with the traditional gaiety.

Bro. Mathew had gone to Roorkee on 18th Jan to attend the Provincial Council meeting on 19th.

He returned on 20th. Bros. T. Alex and William Kerketta paid a short visit to us on their way to and from Roorkee.

Rev. Bro. Provincial was with us here in Sardhana from 24th Jan to 30 Jan. On 24th he met the candidates as a group and addressed them. We are thankful to him for his motivating talk. We were privileged to have him with us on his birthday (29th Jan) so that we could celebrate his birthday. The Brothers from Delhi and Roorkee graced the occasion by their presence. We are thankful to them.

Month of January has been extremely cold here. Bro. Joseph Gabriel braved the chilly breeze. Bro. Mathias found it unbearable at times.

31st Jan, the birthday of our Founder was observed as Montfort Bhawan Day in a small scale. We had a special Mass in our chapel on that day. In the evening the Brothers from St. Charles’ community also joined us for prayer and dinner. During the dinner prizes were distributed to the candidates by Rev. Bro. Mani V.J. and Rev. Bro. Joji Joseph for the various competitions that we had during the year and thus we encouraged them. Next year ten candidates are supposed to join the pre-novitiate. So we can take in only 10 new boys for the next academic year. May I request the vocation promoters to take note of it. Let us be concerned about quality rather than quantity.

In the first week of December Bro. Balla Francis was given farewell and he left for France to join the International community. We thank him for his valuable services here last six months. We really miss his presence and contribution. We wish him all the Best for his mission Ad Gentes.

Montfort, Harinagar Bro. Pradeep Xalxo

I am very glad to write down some of the activities that had taken place during the last two

months. Montfort school Harinagar is one of the most valuable treasure for the people of Harinagar. As we know that “knowledge is wealth” this institution is mainly focused on the remote village students and development of their social status. Our institution in Harinagar is very precious for the people of this locality.

In the first week of December we had with us Priyanshu novice from Sitagarha Novitiate. During his short stay in our community he had shared his talents with our students by organising different activities.

The Christmas season is called the festival season. The schools are closed for Christmas holidays. All the Brothers got involved in carol singing and prayer. Every day we were going from house to house for sharing the love of Christ to the people. Just after the Christmas celebration junior Brothers started their journey to Bhopal to take part in the Annual retreat at.

On 24 February we celebrated “Eis Mata” Grotto feast in Saga which is one of the shrines of Mother Mary. Most of the local people worship in this holy place.

On Republic Day we had a grand celebration in School. A lot of local people gathered to see the programme. The chief guest was Fr. Rocky who highly appreciated the work which has been done for this area.

On 27th January, we celebrated the birthday of Bro. Promod Tete together with the local religious.

On the occasion of our Founders birthday our School organised a short programme paying tribute to St. Montfort. With delighted heart and mind the students welcomed the Brothers with their traditional dance from the residence to the school. They showered their love and care by presenting a short and interesting cultural programme.

On 22nd December we celebrated Christmas in a festive manner. The students put up a beautiful and substantial programme to commemorate the events of the Incarnation history.

Bro. Emmanuel, Bro. Anthony and Bro. Libin went to Bhopal on 26th December for the Annual Retreat of the Junior Brothers. The week slipped past quickly thanks to the efficient Preacher Fr. Benny CMI. Everyone benefitted to the full. They came back on 2nd January 2019.

Bro. Barnabas made his annual home visit from 27th December to 17th January, 2019.

A New Venture: After the winter holidays school reopened on 2nd January, 2019. The school has established a new robotic lab known as ATAL TINKERING LAB sponsored by the Central Government to the tune of Rs. 12 lakhs. Its purpose is to develop a scientific temper as well as cultivate the spirit of curiosity and creativity in the students. This was possible due to the persistent efforts of the Principal Bro. Joy Joseph. He visited several such labs in the city schools to ensure that St. Gabriel’s had the best ATL.

On 12th January students of class 1 to 10 organized an exhibition in Art, Craft, Science and Maths, etc. This really proved their writ and talents in numerous ways and topics. On 14th January Bro. Emmanuel P.J. the P.F.D. left for Pre-Novitiate at Sathyamangalam and Eachinkadu Novitiate. It was the Annual visit to the formation houses. The Teachers and the supporting staff went for a picnic to Mahanadi on 19th January 2019. It is a captivating place and they enjoyed the day with various activities and spending time together in fun and frolic.

We celebrated the Republic Day on 26th January with great fervor and enthusiasm. The Chief Guest of the day was Mrs. Anju Bhattacharya, who retires at the end of January, 2019. We saluted our Mother Land by hoisting the National flag. On that occasion the message too was given by Mrs. Anju Bhattacharya. She said that her father was a brave Army man, who served the nation relentlessly. She felt proud of her father who inspired her in every realm of human living. Interestingly hardly anyone knew that her father was an Army man. The students of class 8th staged a scintillating cultural program on that Red letter day, making the day memorable.

On 26th January there was the exhibition of progressive artifacts of the children in the Pre-Primary classes. They were absolutely mesmerizing works that were appreciated by the Teachers and Parents. The children presenting the exhibits were confident, fluent and sure of their text; this was true of even the 3 year old nursery kids.

On 31st January the Montfort Associates, thirty in number assembled to celebrate the birthday of Montfort. A beautiful prayer session was organized by the Associates. A short reflection on Montfort as a Mystic was shared by Bro. Emmanuel P.J.; good many of them shared their experiences and reflections subsequent to the last meeting. They all dispersed after their refreshment. They would continue to work on the Action Plan of visiting families in difficulties in their already assigned teams.

On 2nd February School gave farewell to Mrs. Anju Bhattacharya and Mrs. Shubra Mukherjee, through a well-organized function. It was quiet an unusual function well represented by quite a number of ex-students by surprise. Mrs. Anju’s words said a lot when she said, “I Came empty handed but now I am leaving with hearts and hands full’’. Both these Teachers served the Institution untiringly and through thick and thin for the past forty years. There was also the graduation ceremony of the class 12th alongside. The outgoing students were accompanied by their Parents to the graduation function; they participated in the farewell as well. They came up with their wards to receive their Medals for various items as well as the souvenirs. The function was attended by a large number of junior students.

In the evening the students of class 4th had their annual function in which they showcased their talents and staged various splendid items including demos in Yoga, skating, etc., under the scheduled programme.

Sitagarha Novitiate Novices: Abinash Soreng & Bernard Ekka

St. Gabriel’s House, Sitagarha: I am immensely happy to share some news from St. Gabriel’s House, Sitagarha with the readers of Dialogue. I am happy to highlight some significant events that took place in the Novitiate House, Sitagarha, Hazaribagh.

Community Experience: “Communication is the backbone of Community life”. Our Communities are places where, we see the hand of God leading us, as the Brothers come together to live and share the word of God everyday.

There is a saying, that “Coming together is beginning, keeping together is success and sharing the knowledge and wisdom together is joy and happiness”. On 1st December 2018, we the Novices of Delhi were sent to Ambikapur for our community experience. We were three of us. It was a good experience for us to feel the biting cold in the bus from Ranchi to Ambikapur. My legs were

completely numbed because of cold. It was ice-cold outside, as we were in the bus. After reaching Ambikapur, I had some running exercises and after that, I realised that my legs were warm and I felt good.

My friend Bernard Ekka and myself were sent to Banea from Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, for community experience. It was indeed a good experience for me. I was asked to teach the students in the School, the whole month of December. Indeed it was a wonderful opportunity for me, to exhibit my talents and enlighten myself by the students. I got some idea to teach the students of different classes in an effective way. In fact, I enjoyed teaching and being with the Brothers of our community.

Retreat: “A flower cannot blossom without sunshine and man cannot live without nature”.

When God leads you to the edge of a cliff, learn to trust him fully. Only one of the two situations will happen: He will catch you when you fall or he will teach you how to fly. On 22nd to 29th February 2019, we had six days of intense retreat before the entry into the Canonical year. Rev. Fr. Daya Kishore Tirkey, a Diocesan Priest, was the Retreat preacher. We started the retreat by reflecting on the “Word of God”, which was the theme of our retreat. We were made to focus mainly on our vocation and the Word of God. We had enough talks and sufficient time for our personal prayer and reflection. All of us had made good confession and concluded the retreat with a solemn Mass. This retreat really helped us to discern and strengthen our vocation. It was helpful for us to prepare ourselves for the entry into the Canonical year of the Novitiate. We thank Fr. Daya Kishore Tirkey for his sense of availability to preach retreat for us.

Visit of Assistant Generals: On 2nd January 2019 Rev. Bro. John Paul Mbengue and Rev. Bro.

T.K. James Assistants General along with Rev. Bro. Clement Kandulna, the National Chairman and Provincial Superior of Ranchi, visited us. Rev. Bro. John Paul Mbengue interacted with us. We were very much excited to listen to him. He shared his life experiences with us and shared the importance of the Novitiate. His classes were very interesting. In the evening, we put up a short cultural programme to welcome them. We had performed some scintillating performances, as it was an opportunity for us to exhibit our talents through this small cultural programme. Brothers appreciated us and encouraged us. All the three Brothers shared very inspiring and motivating messages from their life experiences. These talks enlightened us. They also spoke about the importance and the significance of the Novitiate. It was indeed a worthwhile visit of our beloved Brothers.

Entry into the Canonical Year of the Novitiate: February 2, 2019 was a remarkable day for us Novices. We, the 18 Novices of St. Gabriel’s House, Sitagarha, representing the 8 Provinces in India, were admitted to the Canonical year of the Novitiate. In the morning we had the feast day celebration of the Presentation of Jesus in the temple. And in the evening, we had the presenting of the these Novices into the Congregation in the company of the Brothers of our neighbouring communities along with the National Chairman & Provincial of Ranchi-Bro. Clement Kandulna, the Provincial Superior of North-East: Bro. M.K. Devassy and Provincial Bursar of North East Province: Bro. Thomas Thaniken. These Novices were symbolically welcomed into the Congregation, by the Provincials with Arathi during a very meaningful Prayer service. This was followed by a very good fellowship meal.

Sacred Heart Novitiate: “The best preparation for tomorrow is, to do today superbly well”.

The life at novitiate is always a good preparation for God’s desired life. We live here with this strong conviction.

Class by Bro. George PJ: On 27th January Bro. George P.J. the provincial superior of Yercaud province had come to take classes on “Assertive communication”. He has taught us how to make a good speech and to make better our communication with each other. His classes were very helpful and interesting. We are grateful to you dear Brother for making us to be assertive communicators.

Bro. Yesudas on Mass Communication: In our life communication is like skin. We can’t do anything without communicating from the cradle to the grave. It remains a part and parcel of our existence. In today’s world people are influenced by different ways of communication mostly negative and for ‘A’ class people growth and welfare.

Christmas: “The Christmas spirit is a spirit of giving and sharing”. The advent season started with much hope and enthusiasm to receive the infant Jesus. On those days we were preparing ourselves to commemorate the feast of the Word becoming flesh. This time we had a meaningful Christmas not just external celebration but as Pope Francis said, it was an inward celebration experiencing the hope, faith, joy and peace of the little baby Jesus Christ. We went for the mass to Montfort Chapel and exchanged the gifts with our Christmas friends. It was a perfect time of joy and happiness.

New Year: We welcomed the New Year with lots of hope. A special Mass was held in Montfort chapel. Each one of us offered our personal resolution and aspiration for the New Year. On this day we went to Pagoda point by walking and saw the view of Salem. We all enjoyed the New Year.

The festival of Pongal: On 14th January we celebrated the Pongal festival with the traditional gaiety. We had a special prayer service and we prayed for farmers, cattle and for all the nature. Since it is the festival of harvest, we prepared Pongal in a meaningful way and served it with love to all. We also honoured the cows as a sign of

gratitude. We decorated and shared our Pongal with them. Our Brothers from the south had organized the schedule of the day meticulously. We had a lot of fun games. They were very thrilling games of southern states.

Proud Moments of Eachinkadians: On 26th and 27th a football tournament was organized by the Salesians at the Retreat. We were happy to announce that we have a well formed football team. We exhibited our talents and skills whole heartedly on the game. Eventually by the grace of God and our hard work we won the trophy securing the first place with Rs. 10000/- prize amount. This is indeed a monumental and a history making event for our batch.

Visit of Assistants General: On 1st Dec 2018 we were extremely happy to receive Bro. T.K. James and Bro. Jean Paul our Assistants General and Trichy Provincial. We welcomed them with a tribal dance. Bro. Jean Paul encouraged us to have the effective formation. He gave us the secret how to be happy and explained us the missionary dynamism. He inspired us by his talk and asked us to utilize this crucial period of time to the best way possible.

Time Management by Bro. Emmanuel: On 21st January 2019 Bro. Emmanuel P.J had come to visit us and he taught us basic knowledge of time management and also guided us in our spiritual life which made us to keep deep intimacy with Jesus Christ. The entire Novices of Delhi Province had a personal talk with him. He encouraged us to prepare well to commit ourselves to the Lord.

At present we are preparing ourselves to make our first vows. Our heartfelt congratulations to Rev. Bro. James Ekka, our Provincial Superior. We wish all the best to the new Provincials and wish them good days ahead. May Our Lady of Lourdes bless and protect them.

St. Charles’ Lwanga School, Port Moresby, PNG Bro. P.T. Joseph

The Golden Jubilee of the Montfort Brothers’ arrival (1968) was celebrated in a grand scale at St. Gabriel’s Technical Secondary School, Kiunga on 2nd, 3rd and 4th September, 2018. It was a three days celebration, programmes lasting for 4 to 10 hours each day. The entire local communities, Diocese, people, Government Officials, business houses, different tribal groups, students, teachers and parents participated fully in the celebrations. The presence of 20 Brothers was a first time sight for many.

The Kiunga Brothers community under the able leadership of Bro. Sevak Gabriel has done a wonderful job. Congratulations to the Brothers, Sisters, teachers and the students. The Bishop and the Apostolic Nuncio was present for all the three days, also our Superior General Bro. John Kallarackal, Bro. Ronald from Canada, Bro. Raj Manikam from Singapore and our Provincial Superior Bro. James Ekka along with other eight Brothers from India.

While going and coming the visiting Brothers had a couple of days to relax at St. Charles Lwanga at Port Moresby. It was a rare chance for us to host such a good number of Brothers. We wish to thank the Provincial and the other Brothers for the visit and look forward to such visits and more Brothers joining our mission at PNG.

On 15th December, 2018 was another historic day for the Montfortians. One of the Montfort Priests, Fr. Rosario Menezes was ordained as the

Bishop of Lae the business capital of Papua New Guinea. He is very keen to get at least two Brothers to work in his diocese at the earliest. There are many other requests from other Bishops too.

The results of grade – 10 and 12 National Exams were excellent this year too. Our school was the topper in the country for Grade 10 and secured 4th position in grade – 12 exams. One of our Grade–12 students, JOHN KAWAGLE secured the 1st Rank at the National Level. Due to the good results, the Principal is having a tough time during the enrolment.

On 20th January, Bros. Joy Mathew and M.K. Jose returned after their home visit. Another sister of Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery also came with the Brothers. Sr. Kiran Ekka will be replacing Sr. Valentina D’souza in the school. We are grateful to Sr. Valentina for her seven years of dedicated service to the school. Bro. M.K. Jose had an adventurous journey from Kottayam to Delhi by Kerala Express as he failed to take his daily insulin in the train. Fortunately it was close to Delhi and the co-passengers informed Bro. Alex in Delhi and could be given prompt medical attention. The doctors have increased the quantity of the medicines.

The new academic year commenced on 21st January, 2019 for the teachers and for the students on 28th January.

About 15 of our teachers are planning to visit some of our schools and places in India in December, 2019. The plan is still in the pipeline.

St. Gabriel’s Kiunga Bro. Johnson TC

The wet and dry western province of Papua New Guinea, the land of unexpected, land of bird paradise, cassvary, cuscus tree, kangaroo, and beautiful butterflies, even the biggest butterfly is found in this land (Queen Victoria), exuberating canopy, rivers that has crystal clear water flowing up to the brim all through the year, pouring rain most of the days, dark green rain forest, the list is very long to elaborate about Kiunga a small town where St. Gabriel’s is located.

The students of grade 10 and 12 completed their national examination by the end of month October 2018. As a usual tradition of the school St. Gabriel’s conducted a colorful graduation day for the grade ten and grade twelve students on 22nd

November, 2018. The programme was memorable with colorful cultural dances and academic presentations. The students of grades 10 and 12 looked gorgeous with the specially designed gown. Many religious leaders, politicians, officials and parents spoke to the students and appreciated them for their achievement. The next day the graduating students were given meal as a sign of love and best wishes for their future endeavor. December 7th was the last day of the academic year 2018. The school closed for two months vacation. On 8th there was a final day celebration for the teachers before they go for holydays. The celebration was a mix of farewell for Bro. Gabriel and academic end celebration.

Bro. Gabriel after serving the institution for the last ten valuable years at Kiunga St. Gabriel’s technical Secondary School, left for Port Moresby on 21st December and then proceeded to India. All the people, teachers and students felt that his going was a great loss for the people of Kiunga. They expressed their heartfelt sincerity and love for the great service he has done to the people of western province of Papua New Guinea. In the tenure of Bro. Gabriel, the institution has undergone tremendous changes in all aspects. Many of the incomplete building projects were completed, new class rooms and staff houses were built, beautified the campus with flower beds and orchids, systematized the study method and teaching process and many more academic facilities were also added for the better learning of the poor students of this province. The Brothers, Sisters and teachers wished him best of luck for his new undertaking.

Bro. Johnson has taken charge as principal of St. Gabriel Technical Secondary School from 1st of

January, 2019. The academic year for 2019 started on 21st January. St. Gabriel managed to get all the teachers required for the year before the resumption of the school. The first week of the resumption is used for the in-service of the teachers and 28th January School commenced for the students. The enrollment is still on for both boarding as well as for the school. So far nearly 200 students enrolled for the boarding and 420 students as day Scholars. Bro. Mathias made all the necessary arrangement for the boarding girls and boys.

The agricultural school for the early school leavers- Emmaus farm also resumed for the academic year 2019. Bro. Lucianus is busy in enrolling the new students and they will stay in the boarding for 1 academic year and get trained in basic cash crop cultivation, garden making, fishery, poultry, etc. Every year around thirty students get trained at Emmaus farm and people are quite happy with the mission as some of those pass out students get job in the agricultural department.

I love my Kolkata, The girl pulling rickshaw is the current IAS topper. *Man sitting behind is her father who normally pulls this rickshaw*. She did so to publicly acknowledge her gratitude towards her father for her achievement. Could there be a more loving gesture??

The daughter who became IAS topper, honours her father by taking him around the streets for everyone to see the rickshaw (and the puller) which made her realize her dream. What a wonderful picture!!

Golden Jubilee celebration of the arrival of Brothers of St. Gabriel in PNG the Provincial Council had decided to send the Provincial, all the members of Provincial Council and four senior Brothers who have not been to PNG so far and who were in a position to travel representing the Province.

Accordingly Rev. Bro. Provincial, all the Provincial Councillors except Bro. Albert Abraham, Bros. Emmanuel PJ, Gabriel Lakra, Chacko Azhaketh and NT Cyriac started our journey to PNG on 29th Aug. at 9.00am from Delhi airport. We reached Singapore at 17.25 hrs. (local time). We got the connecting flight to Port Moresby at 20.15 hrs and reached Port Moresby (POM) at 4.50 hrs on 30th Aug. We were warmly welcomed by Bros. Joy Mathew, PT Joseph and MK Jose at the airport. They escorted us to our community at POM. After the bath and a quick breakfast we were welcomed in the school assembly. In the special assembly organized in honour of us the students depicted the history of development of St. Charles’ Lwanga Sec. School. It was a mission started by MSC Fathers. They had started it as a VTC for the drop-out children and later on abandoned due to theft and insecurity. A few years later the Archbishop of POM invited us Brothers to start a school there so that the land will

not be encroached by others. Bro. Philip Thadathil & Bro. Ruben Paulose were the pioneers of that school. They had to face much opposition from the local thugs. We have to give full credit to Bro. Philip Thadathil for having faced all those challenges and established that school. Later on Bros. PT Joseph, Joy Mathew, MK Jose and

Johnson stabilized it. Under the leadership of Bro. PT Joseph St. Charles became the best promising school in PNG for consecutive years. At present the school continues to perform well under the leadership of Bro. Joy Mathew.

Bro. Emmanuel PJ gave 2 hrs of session to the teachers of St. Charles’ Lwanga Sec. School from 11am to 1pm. At 2pm we had an interactive session with the staff. Mr. Patrick the parent representative of the Governing Body also was invited to the same. On 31 Aug. at 8.00am we left for Kiunga. As soon as the plane started moving on the runway one of the engines stopped functioning. So we were asked to disembark. Luckily they found another flight within an hour and took off to Kiunga. We reached Kiunga by 12 noon and we were warmly received by Bros. S. Gabriel, Johnson, Mathias, Lucianus, teachers and students with garlands and bouquets of flowers.

It was a coincidence that we met Rev. Bro. John Kallarackal at POM airport. He was also on his way to Kiunga by another flight. The visit of Archbishop Kurian M. Vayalunkal, Apostolic Nuncio for PNG and Solomon Islands to the diocese of Daru Kiunga also coincided with our Jubilee Celebration. He offered Mass for our hostel students on 1st Sept. morning and also he was the Main Celebrant for the Jubilee Mass on 2nd Sept. at 9am.

On 1st Sept. at 9.30am Bro. Lucianus had arranged a reception for us at Emmaus Farm which was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio, Bishop Gilles Cote and our Superior General. There are 30 students (school dropouts) undergoing one year Agricultural training. After the training most of them are able to find some employment.

At 2pm we met the Bishop and at 6.30pm dinner was hosted by the Bishop.

On 2nd Sept. we had the Jubilee Mass and at 8.30am we had a PowerPoint presentation on the history of the presence of Brothers of St. Gabriel in PNG from 1968 till date in the Cathedral. It was followed by solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Nuncio and Bp. Gilles Cote, SMM and a number of priests from the diocese of Daru-Kiunga. Bro. Lucianus welcomed the celebrants and the gathering.

The theme of the Mass was “Thank the Lord, one with God serving people”. Different tribal dances by the local people and a vibrant melodious singing by the students of our hostel made the liturgy very lively. It was followed by a reception for the Brothers and a few speeches of appreciation and acknowledgment by some of the past students of SGTSS, Kiunga and representatives of different tribes. Each group presented something to the Brothers as a token of their appreciation and gratitude. The whole programme got over only by 3.00pm. Bro. Superior General thanked each group on behalf of the Brothers. Bro. Mathias Minj proposed vote of thanks. The Bishop made the Golden Jubilee a diocesan level celebration.

On 3rd Sept. we had the Golden Jubilee celebration at SGTSS. The programme commenced at 9am and honourable Mr. Taboi Awi Yoto, Governor of Western Province was the chief guest. Archbishop Kurian Mathew Vayalunkal, Bishop Gilles Cote, SMM, Rev. Bro. John

Kallarackal, Superior General, Rev. Bro. James Ekka, Provincial Superior, Mr. Robert Alphonse, Provincial Administrator, Western Province, Mr. James Donald, member of North Fly District were other dignitaries. The colourful programme began with a procession of traditional dances through which they welcomed all the guests. Then there were felicitations by the dignitaries interspaced by colourful dances by different classes of students. All the speakers appreciated the selfless service of the Brothers for the last 50 years in PNG. The long history of 50 years of presence of our Brothers in PNG and all the 38 Brothers who worked and are working in PNG were recalled with appreciation. Some of the former students narrated how the education given by the Brothers have brightened their future and expressed their gratitude and appreciation. As a token of appreciation Mr. Taboi Awi Yoto presented K 20,000/- to the Principal, Bro. S. Gabriel towards the Jubilee celebration. Although the programme was long it was rich in its variety and culture and we were amazed by the patience and discipline of the students and the audience. They did not become restless even after 10 long hours programme. Hats off to Bro. Joy Mathew, the Mission Superior, Bro. S Gabriel, the LS and Principal of SGTSS, Kiunga, all the Brothers and Sisters of both Kiunga and POM Community for having organised such a historic and memorable event!

Montfort School, Mandla celebrates

Silver Jubilee (1993- 2018)

Bro. George Pottakaran

PLOT OF five acres of land was bought in Mandla in the year 1991 and Bro. Sebastian Azhiyakunnel, then a member

of Junwani community was entrusted with the responsibility of building a temporary residence for Brothers and to erect the boundary wall. Then Bro. Emmanuel P.J. and Bro. Herbert moved in next year to start the School building. Montfort School Mandla was formally started on 14th August 1993 with 14 students and a lady teacher, Miss Helen P. Ambrose and under the able leadership of Bro. Emmanuel as the Principal and Bro. Herbert as the Bursar. From a very humble beginning this institution has grown so big and is still growing and shaping the future of so many students.

Today as we celebrate the silver Jubilee of Montfort School Mandla, we thank the Almighty God for all the blessings that we received during the last 25 years. We remember our late Pioneers Bros. Sebastian Azhiyakunnel and Bro. Herbert and pray to them to pray for us. We remember and pray for all the Provincial Superiors (Past and Present) and the Principals under whose able leadership and efficient work this institution grew strength to strength. We also remember and pray for all the Brothers and sisters who worked here and all the students who studied here and passed out from this institution. They are our good ambassadors who have spread the good values that they have imbibed from this institution and bring laurels to this

institution. The Silver Jubilee celebrations started with an

inaugural function on 13th April 2018 with Flag hoisting, lamp lighting and a short cultural program. During the year, we had various inter School activities like; singing competition, football tournament for boys and cricket tournament for girls and intra-school activities like article writing, Montfort quiz, visit to orphanages, pin-up board activities, green school activities, etc.

The culmination of the celebrations took place on 13th and 15th of December 2018. On 13th we had a Thanksgiving Mass; the chief celebrant was Rt. Rev. Gerald Almeida, Bishop of Jabalpur Diocese. Many Brothers, Priests and Sisters from various communities of Jabalpur Diocese took part in it along with the Catholic community of Binjhyia Parish. It was followed by a grand dinner.

On 15th December we had the grand cultural evening. The Chief Guest was Rev. Bro. John

Kallarackal, the Superior General of Brothers of St Gabriel. Bro. James Ekka, Provincial Superior of Delhi Province presided over the function. The program started with the traditional Lamp lighting and the Prayer Dance, followed by the felicitation of the guests, former Principals and the senior most staff and retired staff. The cultural events that took place after the felicitation were of real class and a feast to the eyes. It was a combination of Indian classical, folk and western dance forms. The most impressive program was ‘The Awakening’ a short play on St Montfort’s life and his followers. The program was witnessed by over 3000 parents and well- wishers and nearly 1200 students participated

in the program. Bro George Pottakaran, the Principal, Bro William Kerketta, the Vice-Principal, Bro Anand S, the administrator and the three coordinators; Mr. Emmanuel Robin, Mrs. Evangeline Kusram, Sr. Elisa, the students and the teaching and non- teaching staff really deserve a pat on their shoulders for the meticulous planning and execution of the program. The presence of large number of Brothers from various communities was a real encouragement for the Brothers of the community and the school staff. The Brothers of the community are indebted to all the Brothers of the Province for their valuable prayers and wishes.

India Celebrates 70th Republic

Day and Gandhiji's 150th Birth Anniversary Year

India on Saturday, 26th January celebrated the

70th Republic Day and the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Father of the Nation with grand military parade and exhibition of its history, cultural diversity, and strategic weaponry at the Rajpath in the presence of thousands of spectators including foreign dignitaries and the country's top political and military brass with the South African President Ramaphosa as the chief guest. Ramaphosa's presence at the event was significant as India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation who had spent 21 years in South Africa before returning to India to join the freedom struggle.

The Republic Day has a remarkable history, a tremendous present and will have a bright future if we all contribute in different and noble ways for the betterment of our country. It is celebrated in a very special way to honor the efforts of several constitution makers who made sure the smooth transformation of India into a constitutional democracy.

The Challenge: How can we Brothers as educators take effective leadership role and steps to help our Country in its development materially, mentally, socially and spiritually? How far are we in a position to effectively implement in our educational Institutions the following? Despite having 29 States, we are Indians first. Our

cultures vary from region to region and languages change at short distances but then, unity in diversity is our identity.

Propagating the history of our people especially the freedom struggle, the sacrifices made by so many of our countrymen to attain freedom irrespective of the feeling of cast, creed, religion, language, etc...

Be the change that we want to see in India : Educating and nurturing our children to be the change for the future

Creating a strong sense of Patriotism rather than Nationalism. Patriotism involves universal brotherhood with a strong sense of pluralism whereas nationalism is a narrow concept. Establishing right and creative ambience and atmosphere in the school campus to promote Patriotism and better development of our country.

All our institutions are to provide the infrastructure relevant to the requirements as well as the staff progressively to facilitate inclusive education (X P.C. page 36).

Environmental concerns - Preservation and integration of creation: Eco club, celebration of Environmental Day, Tree plantation, Plastic free campus, swatch Bharat, swatch surroundings, swatch campus etc., (Ref P.C. pages 36-37).

Responding actively to victims of natural calamities, communal riots etc., without counting the cost and consequences (Ref P.C. page 39).

Give adequate training to our collaborators and associates on the above points to make them effective and competent (Ref P.C. page 39).

Let us reflect and ponder over the above challenges and find ways of implementing them to make ourselves more effective to build up a healthy nation.

Theological Reflection Time to know them all

Bro. Alex Diamond Raj SG, I year B.Th., Vidyajyoti College of Theology, Delhi.

HERE IS time for everything; time to know, learn, explore,

experience, and introspect various aspects of our lives in and around the place where we are planted. The

search for the realization begins to hit the sky when we are engaged in knowing the things we are not even aware of or least bother about. Such things are taken for granted when it is supposed to be taken care of with deep reverence. Those beautiful aspects are none other than knowing about our brethren from different religions. I feel lucky to say that I am given

T

a golden opportunity to know them all during my theological journey.

Seeking takes place to know the unknown and

understand the reality of certain aspects in order to be understood with the broad-mindedness of Indian society. It is crystal clear that our nation is a combination of many religions and its cultural background. After being spent enough and more valuable time in the holy place at Varanasi, I realized that people are rushing to experience the eternal in the abode of God which would ultimately give the heavenly feelings to the one who is seeking the truth in order to understand the real meaning of God-given life. Their belief in God is unfathomable, and their involvement in religious knowledge is visible to all the other faiths. At Varanasi, self- realization of Buddhism, Bhakti movement by Kabirdas, Evangelization of Christianity, and the simple faith of Hinduism made me to have mixed feelings of unity in diversity. I was taken aback by the numerous temples in and around the city which went deep in my heart in order to change the entire idea of popular Hindu religion.

I am indeed personally touched by the course on “Popular Islam.” Islam is nothing but From Allah, For Allah, To Allah, because the ultimate aim in life is to come to this world in order to live as expected and go back to Allah with the deep satisfaction. I learnt many more positive aspects of this peace loving religion in spite of my prejudices and misunderstandings I have heard till date. I came to

know that Islam is to surrender one’s life to God. Islam means submission, so, what should a Muslim do to submit one’s life to God? The answer is simple; believing what God has taught and obeying what God has commanded. Most importantly it is reaffirming one’s submission to God at the key moments of the day. As a Christian, I feel blessed to know that Mother Mary is the great bridge between Muslims and Christians. I felt that God is merciful so I make myself to be merciful. God is forgiving so I make myself to be forgiving. It is not too late to learn anything new and learning about other religions deepened my own faith of Christianity.

Sufism is another level of understanding the spirituality of Islam. It is an Islamic movement to lead the believer to a union of love with God. I realized that Sufism helps to prepare oneself to accept God’s favour and remove the obstacles by the help of the grace given by God. Sufism brings comfort to the hearts of others and ultimately playing the role of bringing people together. The sense of satisfaction overflows in my heart that knowing the religions of our brethren indeed helped me to think beyond my comfort zone and learn to accept them as they are in this fast approaching religion-oriented society. It is the great sign that my involvement in knowing our brethren would eventually help the people to know them in an optimistic and broader perspective. My part is still in progressively progress. Challenge: What about you? Learn to know them all in order to know you better.

New Initiatives and

In Education Summer or winter break is often a needed respite from school, but it’s also a natural time to think about how the classroom experience might be improved. Here’s a look at a few educational innovations from around the world. Some of these innovations are technological, while others are philosophical. Some are brand-new, while others have been around for a few decades. All are enhancing student learning in interesting and sometimes counterintuitive ways. 1. South Korea: Robot Teachers In some South Korean classrooms, students learn

English from Engkey, an egg-shaped robot English teacher with a cute humanoid face. Engkey is controlled remotely by a native English-speaker (at home in, say, Australia or the U.S.), whose face is projected on Engkey’s screen. Known as a “telepresence” robot, Engkey helps address shortages of native English teachers in South Korea. Other types of robots help students check in for class, inquire about their moods or teach them to dance.

Dialogue, Jan.-Mar., 2019 26

2. 3D learning in the United Arab Emirates How cool it is to study complex subjects with the help of 3D technology? The answer is absolutely amazing! All you need is a pair of 3D glasses, and you can take a look at the image of the human brain, the model of the universe, or the insides of a jet. And the cost of such pleasures is getting lower and lower every day. Right now, only GEM Modern Academy in Dubai is practicing this approach, but there is reason to believe that many other schools will soon follow in their footsteps. No more boring maps or outdated projectors — an approach like this can revolutionize the way any subject, from history to geography, is taught. 3. Teacher and curriculum autonomy in Finland Finland has the strongest educational system in the world. The mere fact that 93% of its students graduate from high school (the highest percentage in the world, 17.5% higher than in the US) says a lot. Teacher autonomy is probably one of the major reasons why students perform so well. Different from the majority of educational establishments, Finland has moved past the standardized testing, limiting the number of tests to a minimum. In addition, the teachers are not expected to stick to a standard curriculum, which allows talented professionals adjust to their students’ needs on the go. And, of course, it keeps gifted teachers teaching — another problem many countries have been struggling with for years. 4. Individualized learning plans in the Netherlands A similar approach has been adopted by Finland’s neighbor, the Netherlands. Right now, there are still a few schools that practice this approach, but hopefully, the number will increase in time. Today, there is definitely one Netherlands school that attracts the most attention — and that is Steve Jobs School in Amsterdam. The institution lives up to its name and practices the ‘think differently’ approach. There is very little homework, very little testing, and no grades whatsoever. The system is designed to allow all kids study at their own pace. While a lot of educational establishments practice similar approaches (to a certain extent, at least), very few junior schools start with freedom and creativity so early in the curriculum. 5. Free university education in Germany Even though a lot of countries practice grants for the most talented students, Germany went even farther than that and did away with tuition fees whatsoever. The decision makes up for an entirely free higher education system, and the best part is — not only Germans, but any other citizens can make full use of it. Sure, the absence of any tuition costs

has a downside (well, sort of). German universities consist mainly of classroom buildings and libraries — no gyms, pools, or free campus rooms for the students. In favor of the Poor 1. Minimum Income for the Poor: The Congress party has decided to provide a guaranteed minimum income to the poor in all the states, provided the party is elected to power at the national level. It's going to be a historic one (if implemented) and first of its kind in the world as no other country has come up with such a decision so far. 2. Free coaching classes for underprivileged Students: Central Library, Bhopal has come up with an initiative to provide free coaching classes to selected 250 students in order to facilitate students from underprivileged background. They will be prepared to appear for MPSC, UPSC, MPSI, etc. 3. India pioneering pro-poor innovation: The frugal innovation such as Tata’s micro-car, the Nano, Godrej’s portable top-loading refrigerator, mobile phones with commercially viable GSM system independent of the power grid, etc... International Initiatives 1. Artificial Intelligence In March 2017, Canada was the first country in the world to announce a national strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI), with CAN$125 million investment over the next five years by the federal government. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a research priority for a growing number of countries. An emerging area of interest of AI is for human development for the benefit of all humanity. It will help to highlight how best to use the internet and computing to improve education, healthcare and governance and the opportunity to use AI technologies to combat entrenched problems such as misinformation and rumors. 2. Boat made of Recycled Plastic Waste The world’s first ever traditional ‘dhow’ sailing boat made entirely from recycled plastic known as the Flipflopi created by Kenyan tour operator Ben Morison and Ali Skanda. It has completed a boat ride of 500km from the Kenyan island of Lamu to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar; making an awareness of world’s biggest environmental challenge of plastic pollution.

School Counseling

Counseling is designed to facilitate student achievement, improve student behavior and attendance, and help students develop socially and spiritually. Some of our schools have full-time counselors on staff in order to support students who are experiencing personal or academic challenges, to help them choose careers and plan for college studies, and intervene when students face behavioral, physical, or mental health challenges.

In the early 20th century, as industrial centers grew throughout the United States, secondary schools began to increase their focus on courses that would help prepare students to enter the workforce. Some teachers were absorbed as vocational counselors in order to assist in these efforts. School counselors, also known as guidance counselors, were first primarily responsible for facilitating career development. Today, the role of the school counselor is multifaceted and may vary greatly, depending on the requirements of both the state / country and each individual school.

In a school set up, Counsellors are responsible for working with students who need help managing their studies, behavior and plan for the future. They also work with the school authorities, teachers and parents to develop a healthy school environment and ambience free of illegal or undesired activities such as bullying, fights etc. Most of our schools have School counseling programs. It is much needed as the society keeps changing rapidly and it is difficult for the students, parents and teachers to cope up with the rapid changes.

A counselor from one of our schools is happy to share with us

some such problems among many that she has encountered and helped the students. We are happy to share those cases below: -

1. A seventeen years old boy of twelfth class was referred to me by the coordinator. I was told that the child is not able to pay attention in his studies due to some reason. The coordinator further added that he seems to be lost since last few days.

I called him to the wellness room. He came and started crying like anything. I gave him some time to cool down and tried to create an environment for private and confidential conversation. He started narrating his break-up with his girlfriend, who all of a sudden broke with him for a new relationship. He could not digest this act of his girlfriend and solicited my help to cope-up with the situation.

I listened to him very carefully and tried to seek more information about the matter. I found no valid reason for the break up with the boy. I consoled the boy and asked him to cherish good moments of their association and move forward. I made him understand that he should strive for his self esteem and respect. I advised him to devote more time with his near and dear ones. I also made him realise the importance of a good career which may get affected because of this temporary setback. I told him that time and nature is natural healer and he will be alright in the coming days.

I did the follow up for few more weeks. He re-gained his lost confidence and thanked me and

assured to run a winning race. I tried to make him understand the importance of maintaining academic standards and motivated him to set goals for academic success by developing study habits and time management. 2. One fifth class boy from primary wing was also sent to me by the class teacher. The teacher said that the child has low self-esteem and not performing well in studies. The teacher said that he took more time than others to understand and formulate responses in the class.

I called him and tried to create an environment for private and confidential conversation. He spoke in slow and deliberate manner. He was failing in most of the subjects. He was hesitant to participate in any of the extra-curricular activities.

I understood that to address this issue, I needed to collaborate with his teachers and parents. What was important for all of us to understand was that this child was different from others and needed more attention, time and space to cope-up with his studies. I did the follow-up for few more weeks and helped him to understand that he can be more successful and feel better about him if he blocks out distractions in the class and could focus on what the teacher was saying. I asked him to set a goal and make a time table which will help him to manage his time more effectively and will keep him targeted towards his goal.

I requested his teachers to spend some extra time with him and give him more time to complete his task. I also suggested that a student who is good in studies can be associated with him for a friendly guidance and help. Similarly the parents too need to spend some extra qualitative time with him and help him as and when he required it. In next few counselling sessions he reported that he was feeling better about him and has improved several of his grades from E to C. These

Page 29: crossed the Crusade lines to meet the Sultan of Egypt in 1219.€¦ · Brother Francis of Assisi crossed the Crusade lines to meet the Sultan of Egypt in 1219. Pope Francis, Brother

Dialogue, Jan.-Mar., 2019 29

improvements helped him feel good.

We all need to understand that such children do not learn the same way as others learn. School counsellors often help students to resolve conflicts with their peers, teachers and parents. 3. One child of class VIII, middle school, was referred to me by the parents. They said that the child could not control his temper, which resulted in fighting in the school and outside with other children. He also argued with his teachers in the school and parents at home.

I called him and tried to create a conducive environment for the child to talk freely. I welcomed him with a warm good morning and solicited his cooperation to address the issue with a collaborative approach.

He expressed his thoughts

and opinions. I listened carefully and zeroed down the causes of his aggressive behaviour and his argument to dominate others. I

tried to make him realize that he can control his emotions by few simple methods like counting back from twenty to one or breathe in and out. I gave him a squeezing ball and said that he may squeeze the ball as and when his emotions run high. I also advised him to move away from the spot for the time being to get rid of his out-burst. I asked him to channelize his energy for constructive work and suggested few. I separately met his parents and requested them to be extra careful in their talk and activities while the child is around.

I did the follow-up and after a few sessions, was glad to know

that he had improved so much that his relationships with others improved significantly in the school as well as outside.

Therefore there are many tasks performed by a school counsellor which can be of great help not only to the children and the school but for the society as well. When a school counsellor suspects the presence of a learning, behavioural, or mental health concern, they will refer the child to a specialist in the community. These difficulties then can be diagnosed by a clinical psychologist. Note: In our forthcoming issues, we plan to share more of such incidents/ problems faced by the students and the way the counsellors helped in our institutions. I am sure the Brothers will motivate the counsellors to write some of them so that we can publish them in the coming issues of ' 'Dialogue'.
