#1 How should we design the user interface
Challenge effectively – what do we want clients to do?
Strategy: Focus groups? Design and review? NO
Solution Develop concept in-house, discuss with designer,
implement and then ask clients for feedback on
several designs (why do you like X, if we change
color would you prefer Y over X?)

Industrial versus consumer product or dashboard
Consumer – solve problem -----
Industrial – solve problem AND you may have tender specifications
you must meet (think channel tunnel and Siemens winning against
Alstom – trains)

Industrial solve problem
save money/reduce costs
better way of doing it (improved battery live)
Consumer you should know and design a product like iPhone
that meets a consumer need (consumer might not
even know yet that he has it) AND solves a problem
(easier communicating)

Does you textbook define innovation, crowdsourcing, patents etc.?How are these terms etc. defined in other MBA courses/modules?
How does crowdsourcing, innovation-sharing – apply our know-how/patent to your industry....
What is your company„s core innovation. Do you use crowdsourcing in your work?

_KISS – Value and keeping control of the distribution
channel - Apple
2011_01_19
●Get discovered. There is no point in creating a great app if nobody
can find it. Offering the app for free first may help you establish a
following, but a clever marketing gimmick that will appeal to your
target audience or get you talked about could be just as helpful.
●Be flexible. Charging for your product may work in some cases. But
you could find that you make more money by offering it for free and
then charging for add-ons or by taking a cut from advertisements
every time the app is downloaded.

_KISS – Value and keeping control of the distribution
channel - Apple
2011_01_19
●Make your app work on lots of platforms. Often it does not cost
that much more and it widens your reach, remember Android outsells
iPhone by 2 to 1 https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics/free-or-paid-monitoring-tools-facebook-twitter-blogs-google-etc-436324/google-
first-search-twitter-identi-ca-facebook-archive-now-29467269/34340542/#34340542
●Innovate. Once you have struck lucky, do not just sit around. Start
working on the sequel or updates. You stay at the top of the charts by
innovating and evolving.

Remember 30 percent who pay and download an iPhone app or
application actually use it the day after purchase.
Analyzing over 30 million downloads from Apple's App Store reveals
that only 5% continue to actively use the app 20 days after
downloading.
How many still use the „20 Minuten‟ App?
Because data for free Apps is such that less than 3% are used 30
days after download http://commetrics.com/?p=10284

_KISS – Apps – what works
2011_01_19
The top-sellers in the iPhone App Store and Android are dominated
by games:
- flight simulators,
-solitaire, and s
- simple brick-breaking games.
-currency conversion aids, ovulation trackers, electronic shopping
lists and applications that turn the phone into a voice recorder are
popular as well

_KISS – Apps – what works
2011_01_19
The cleverest applications use the unique features of smartphones,
such as their ability to:
- triangulate location,
- internal compass and the
- “accelerometer”, which knows which way up the phone is being
held.
Wikitude, developed by Mobilizy, a small Austrian coding team, is a
handheld travel guide that uses the inbuilt compass and GPS in
Android phones to provide on-the- move information about 350,000
landmarks around the world.

iBeer, developed by magician Steve Sheraton, projects an image of a
pint of lager on an iPhone screen, and, as the phone is tipped over,
the virtual beer pours away. There is even a burp at the end.
PS. You get 70% of what you charge for your App, rest stays with Apple
Amazon and Kindle: In 2009 it said it would publish your blog on Kindle but it would get
70% of the revenue and decide at what price it would be sold to its customers = $.99 to
$1.99
Jan 20, 2010 it changed and started offering a 70% share to publishers
