Crowdsourcing Translation, Proofreading, and Other Tasks

CONFIDENTIAL - DO NOT DISSEMINATE. This business plan contains confidential, trade-secret information and is shared only with the understanding that you will not share its contents or ideas with third parties without the express written consent of the plan author.

The Problem

• There is unrealised demand for proofreading and translation services. It’s a $31 billion USD market with growth of 7.41% annually.

• These services (currently performed by agencies or individuals) are expensive and do not scale.

• Automated services lack human judgment.• It can now be performed at lower cost, higher quality and

faster speed than if any single worker completed a task alone.• Copy-editing, coding, data categorization and group test are

other tasks that PlayWorks can tap into.

The PlayWorks Solution

• PlayWorks is a crowdsourcing community that leverages many people for a single task.

• PlayWorks breaks a document into hundreds of smaller slices, increasing confidentiality, objectivity, and speed while sustaining their context and tone.

• The document is re-assembled for the client, and top performing translators are rewarded or paid based on the volume of work they do.

3. Anyone can become a player via their iPhone, Android or Facebook.

2. Players get paid only if they are proficient based on peer reviewed scoring; they have to be above the 85th percentile.

4. In order to attract players, they are offered brainteaser initially. It pays to play!

1. We slice documents and then randomly distribute them to players.

How It Works

5. Player A gets a task with relevant context.

7. When player A is done, they get a 90-second brainteaser of their choosing.

6. Others review the task.

8. Player A is given more tasks and brain teasers in a uniquely addictive experience.

9. The document is re-assembled for the client quickly at lower cost and at higher quality.

Business Model

Why Brain Teasers?

The Task/Review approach is the USP for players. Players want to be rewarded immediately for their work. Neural scientists believe that regular work intervals mean more lucid

execution of work tasks. So do we. Brain teasers include any game, training, or distraction. The brain teasers can be career relevant, or simply relaxing. The brain teasers have a one time cost where as paying a player is very

expensive. We can also sell the brain teasers or buy brain teasers from 3rd parties, and gain all kinds of information through their play.

We cannot pay just anyone who starts using PlayWorks. In order for the logic of the system to work, players need to persevere through peer reviews of a minimum of 100 sentences before our system classifies them as an A Player who should be paid.

Underlying Magic

• PlayWorks processes confidential and context-sensitive work while being low cost. The cost is initially for the brainteaser development, therefore the wisdom of the crowd is harnessed at cost.

• People love purpose. Money is not the motivator but autonomy, mastery and self-direction for players leads to satisfaction. We intentionally skew the employee versus player by paying players to do tasks in exchange for rewards;

• PlayWorks turns gamers, students, and anyone with the extra time into wealth generators;

• Proofreading, Translation, Coding, and Copy-editing are the initial verticals, but there are other industries that PlayWorks can port to with ease.

Competition

• Cottage Country: freelancers and agencies.• Direct Competition: Duolingo has users doing translation

while teaching them another language. Acclar is another business that is in this space. Automation: Google and Bing are translating but they do not have human judgment which is necessary for difficult problems and other tasks that require intuition.

• Brain Teaser Market: Lumosity/BrainTeaserApps/CogMed• Task Market: Amazon Mechanical Turk has people doing

tasks for money. We call it content driven tasks, Amazon calls it high intelligence tasks (HITs). CardMunch, Roamler, Coffee&Power, and eLancer. Crowdsource.com received 12million in seed funding in 2012.
