Letters Patent I he Queens document which actualh makes the appointment: thisis either Great Sealed or Wafer Great Sealed: typed or handnritten on ellum. I heI etters Patent are usualh gi en to the appointee or to the person to whom the areaddressed:

the Patent Roll entr this is a record of the Warrant. Ihe Patent Roll entries arebound together at the end of each Regnal Year (i.e. 5ih February) and sent to the\ational \rchixe, together with the \Varrants. for permanent retention

Ihere are two ersions of the Warrant:

By Warrant under The Queen’s Sign Manual these are submitted to I he Queenby a Secretary of State (usually the Home Secretary). These Warrants are prepared bythe Crown Office on receipt of instructions from the originating 1)epartment knownas a “gi\ing effects letter”. .\lIer Ihe Queen has signed the Warrant. the submittingMinister signs it and upon its return to the Crown Office, the Lord Chancellor signs.or “recepis” it to acknowledge receipt of the instructions. The “recepi” is the CrownOffice’s authority to use the Great Seal. If the submitting Minister is not aailable tosign the Warrant, the Lord Chancellor may sign on his behalf see section 2 of the(ireat Seal \et 1884
