While enjoying the luxe comforts of Crown’s City of Dreams, take the opportunity to discover the

layers of history behind Macau’s modern façade. WorDs

Clockwise from left: The ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral; Fisherman’s Wharf Roman amphitheatre; the height of luxury, Crown Towers, City of Dreams

steppingback in time

t’s an extraordinary experience to stand at the foot of the grand steps leading up to the façade of Macau’s magnificent remains of the Cathedral of St Paul.

This imposing landmark is a reminder that this vibrant, modern region has a remarkable and colourful past as China’s first port to be colonised

by the Portuguese nearly 500 years ago.In what was an often-fraught period in Macau’s

history, the Cathedral was built during the last decade of the 16th century by the Jesuits. Despite being ravaged by fire in 1835, the intricately carved southern façade remains a poignant monument to times gone by.

For a further glimpse of this enriching history, walk through the old square, Largo do Pagode da Barra, which resembles ancient parts of Rome, Paris or Lisbon.

Macau’s unusual European cultural fusion has also spawned a range of colourful events – arts, music and fireworks festivals, a dragon boat regatta,

a marathon foot race, to name just a few – that attract visitors from all over the world.

The prestigious Macau Open golf tournament and the legendary Guia Race and Macau Grand Prix complete the international sporting calendar. If you miss the racing action, a visit to the GP Museum reveals some of the most famous cars in the race’s illustrious history.

Nearby, Crown’s City of Dreams provides the perfect base from which to explore the heritage of Macau, with a myriad of tantalising options to enhance your stay.

After a day’s sightseeing, a deep-tissue massage and gentle swim in the world-class Crown Spa is the perfect way to unwind before taking the opportunity to see the award-winning production The House of Dancing Water. This acclaimed 85-minute show has enthralled more than two million guests since it opened in 2010 and includes more than 80 performers, who dive, dance, defy gravity on motorcycles and generally provide a visually stunning theatrical experience – in and on top of a 17-million-litre pool.

After the show, indulge in an exploration of City of Dreams’ many designer boutiques, including

Gucci, Bally and Burberry, or find time – literally – to view the creations from luxury Swiss watchmakers Chopard or Longines.

For a sublime and relaxing dinner, why not reserve a table at The Tasting Room, where Michelin-starred chef Guillaume Galliot will dazzle you with his French organic cuisine.

Finally, after a day spent immersing yourself in the rich culture and history of this fascinating region, savour the moment from your Crown suite, with a glass of French champagne or classic cognac in hand and the sparkling Cotai lights below. Exploring history in such style has never been more rewarding.
