His voice matches his equally
youthful looks, the silken touch andvelvet tenor of his vocals only havingseasoned over the decades to makehis music sublime. He is one singerwho has experimented with differentkinds of music, but retained theauthenticity and flavour of every genre,
ensuring that there is no admixtureeither. The purity of his music lies asmuch in maintaining the originality ofthe form as in his rendering, makingKattassery Joseph Yesudas a topperformer who draws packedaudiences even after five decadesof being a performer.
CROWNING GLORY FOR CELESTIAL SINGER
Hon’ble minister for Urban Development, Sri Ambarish honouring Dr. K.J. Yesudas andSmt. Prabha Yesudas. While Smt. Sumalatha Ambarish, Dr. B. Saroja Devi,

To such a singer, to whomrecognitions have cascadedover the years, came yetanother crowning glory —the Dr. B. Saroja Devi NationalAward 2015, instituted bythe multi-lingual cine artisteherself, lending the award theextra sheen of recognition of anace artiste by another equallyrenowned one. After all,Padmabhushan Dr. B. SarojaDevi was both a star and anactress, having acted with topheroes in the South, while yetmaintaining her individual screenpresence.
Routed through the BengaluruKendra of the Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan, the function, on April 11,at its premises, had the glamourand glitter of a cine event, while not taking away from itssobriety. What is true of a visualperforming art such as dance isequally true of music—manodharma becomes anathema tothe artiste if he/she does not havethat strength of character. Thistruism was reflected in Yesudas’acceptance speech when he

stressed that there is only oneGod for humankind.
His declaration that “we arehumans first and I am a Bharatiya”was more a statement of his lifephilosophy, which he has livedand shown by example, thanbeing mere rhetoric. The singer, who has never worn his religionon his sleeve, said that theUpanishads encompass all theteachings contained in the world’s
holy books. What he spoke onstage rang true, as the artiste haslived a transparent life, where hisvalue systems have transformedhis music into an experience ofanother realm.
With humility, he attributed hissuccess to his parents, particularlyhis musician father, who hadimpressed upon him to learnCarnatic music, and refrain fromtaking to politics. The awardcarries a purse of Rs. one lakhand a citation.
Karnataka Housing MinisterDr. Ambareesh, a fellow cineartiste, while giving the awardmade a pertinent point when hesaid that Yesudas had earned his

fame through the demanding fieldof classical music— the film worldhad benefitted from his music, butYesudas himself had not becomefamous because of his popularityas a playback singer.
