HISTORY Vågar, the first known town formation in North Norway, wassituated around the narrow, natural harbour near Kabelvåg,just west of Svolvær. Vågar is mentioned in the Heimskringla sagas, and may have been established as early as 800 AD. One of the first churches in North Norway was most likelybuilt here, about 900 years ago. The great cod fisheries in winter have always been the most important economic basis for the town, but fish farming (salmon) is also important in present-day Vågan. Svolvær was given township privileges in 1918, but thiswas discontinued following a merge with neighbouringmunicipalities in 1964. Township was declared again in1996. Tourism is becoming increasingly important, andSvolvær is a transport hub and favourite starting point fortourists visiting the islands. Approximately 250,000 tourists visit Svolvær each year.
