PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

2

I can’t believe how quickly 2015 flew by! In spite of all of the healthcare challenges we in long-term care face, Beechwood

Continuing Care experienced a very strong year for all our communities. We haveactively sought out opportunities which position our Homes to serve a greater role in the ever-changing health care forum and are very excited about furthering our mission to touch more livesin our community.

I would like to share with you what we have accomplished in our communities in 2015 aswell as what we all look forward to in 2016:

Asbury Pointe:Thanks to all the hard work and the continuous

efforts of our marketing and operations team to provide the finestindependent living experience in WNY, Asbury Pointe has over a

95% occupancy rate and a robust waiting list ofpotential prospects.

Although Asbury looks as fresh as the day itopened, it was determined that kitchen upgrades for all the apartments were need-ed including custom cabinetry, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. These upgrades began this past year and will be ongoing until complete.

Blocher:Blocher Homes has had a long reputation of providing very personalized care for its residents since 1906. A

few years ago, Blocher received certification from NYS Department of Health to provide enhancedassisted living services. What this means is that Blocher Homes can accommodate the changing clinical

needs and preferences of its residents to allow them to “age in place”in their “home” at Blocher rather than transferring to a skilled nursingenvironment. This new program is in great demand - both with ourpresent residents and potential residents in the community.

Blocher also received a bit of a facelift this past year including the additionof a second public elevator and improved air-conditioning in the common areas. To enhance the resident experience and create a more home-like environment, administrative space was converted into inviting sitting areas where residents can

now socialize with fellow residents, families and friends or just sit by the fireplace with a book on a cold winterday. In addition, the front lobby, wall-coverings and carpeting were updated using bright, cheerful colors and pat-terns as well as adding new artwork. We look forward to additional improvements in 2016 to the resident diningroom, library and auditorium.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Beechwood:I’m proud to report that more and more seniors of Western New York are choosing Beechwood Homes for

their short-term care and post-acute rehabilitation needs. Over the last two years, the short-term care andrehabilitation average daily census has increased by almost 30%. Fulfilling the community need forthe provision of increasingly acute care in a post hospital setting - whilemaintaining our Welcome Home person-centered care mission – has beenvery rewarding and will remain a strategic focus for Beechwood.

Whether it’s for short-term care or long-term skilled nursing serv-ices, the residents admitted to Beechwood Homes are living with moremedically complex conditions and challenges than they generally werejust two or three years ago. As a result, we continue to challenge ourhealth care delivery model: increasing staffing and the complement oflicensed personnel across all disciplines; integrating new technology into the provision of person-centered care; and developing unique partnerships with other medical providers to better serve thehealth care needs of our community.

Hospice Wells House at Beechwood is a model example of the benefits of suchcollaboration. Since opening in July 2013, over 200 residents have participated in this specialty care program. Resident, family, and community response to the living experience andend-of-life care provided in Hospice Wells House has been extremely positive. The uniquenature of the partnership and the proven benefits of collaborating in the provision of care haveeven led to national interest in the program. Wells House has been featured in publicationand/or presentation by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM)

and the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC).

As we enter 2016, I can’t help but reflect on, appreciate and be proud of the proactive steps takenat Beechwood Continuing Care over the last few years to ensure continued success and prosperityin these challenging times. Thanks to the dedication, vision and commitment to excellence of ourBoard of Directors and all staff . . . the future of Beechwood Continuing Care is bright!

Daniel P. O’Neill – President/CEO

As a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) of the RAF, DoraButcher Whissel Mantione served as a messenger in Gloucester, England andNorthern Ireland in the 1940s. Her job was to deliver important orders and mes-

sages from headquarters. Telephones were scarce, so Dora was one of several females whoheld this crucial position, serving in the RAF for two and a half years and working her wayup to 1st Class status.

Although they did not participate in active combat, the WAAFs were exposed to thesame dangers as any on the homefront working at military installations. And while Dora didn’t see any dangerous action, she did see a lot of wounded.

“Those men were so brave,” says Dora, who was born in Clacton-on-Sea, England in 1923 and enlisted just before her 18th birthday. “I was proud to serve and help inany way I could, and it was a good life. I got to travel and meet a lot of people, and the work wasexciting. It made my mother so proud, because I also had a sister who served in the Army and abrother in the Navy.”

During the war, Dora met her first husband, Paul Whissel, who was serving with the U.S.Army in Northern Ireland. They married and returned to the United States, to Buffalo, whereshe’s lived for 70 years. Paul and Dora were married for 39 years and raised two children. Today,Dora has nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. After Paul died, Dora married AngeloMantione. When he passed away, Dora lived on her own for many years before moving toBeechwood last year, where she’s settled in nicely.

“Everyone here is so nice, and the food is very good,” says Dora.

IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts are Here to Stay!

A fter many years of last-minute renewals, Congress has made permanent the IRA CharitableRollover agreement which allows people 70½ years of age or older to transfer up to $100,000of tax-free gifts from their IRA to their favorite charity. This has been proven to be a signifi-

cant incentive for donors to make new and increased contributions to charities throughout the nation.

If you or someone you know has an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and is 70½ or older—the age ofIRS required minimum distributions—you can benefit from the rollover in several ways. For example, the rolloverenables people to give tax-free donations to charity from their Traditional IRA account of any amount up to$100,000 yearly.

If you were considering a gift to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation and you would like to takeadvantage of this special opportunity, this would give you a wonderful option. We will work directlywith you, your financial advisor and/or IRA administrator to ensure your gift meets all transfer requirements. Ifyou would like more information on how you can support our Homes through this exciting provision, contactCheryl Wasson, Director of Development at 716-810-7370.

Most everyone is familiar with Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her Little House on the Prairie seriesof books, based on her family’s life and adventures on the Midwestern frontier, have soldmore than 40 million copies in the U.S., have been translated into more than 40 lan-

guages and were the basis for a long-running television show and a stage musical.

Laura was born in Wisconsin in February 1867. She was a teacher before marrying AlmanzoWilder in 1885 and becoming a mother. Life was busy on the prairie, leaving little time for person-al pleasures such as writing. But in the 1910s, Laura’s daughter, Rose Wilder Lane – by then areporter for the San Francisco Bulletin – encouraged her mother to begin writing. Laura’s first book,Pioneer Girl, was rejected by publishers (in fact, it was finally published just about a year ago), but Laura persevered.

In 1932, her first book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published. Laura was65 years old. She continued to produce books that focused on the places she lived, finishing her last book in 1943 at the age of 76.

Little House on the Prairie, a television show based on Laura’s books, aired in 1974 and ranfor eight years. It is now being adapted into a movie. Today, nearly 60 years after her death in1957 at the age of 90, Laura’s books continue to engage and entertain children and adults.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has two “local” connections: her father, Charles Ingalls, was bornin Cuba, NY in 1836 and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, was born in Malone, NY in 1857.

partnership that offers a school-to-work programalternative for students with disabilities who are intheir last year of high school. The program is providedthrough Beechwood in conjunction with Erie 1BOCES, Aspire of WNY and Summit EducationalResources.

By combining real-life work experience with training inemployment and independent living skills, the goal is foreach student intern to obtain competitive, integratedemployment.

“This year, we’re focusing on dining services skills –everything from taking orders, doing the cooking and prepa-ration, plating and serving,” says Erin R. Richeal, Exceptional Education Teacher, Project SEARCH. “Our interns

are doing phenomenally well this year – not just meeting the expectations, but exceeding them.”

In the three years Beechwood has participated in Project SEARCH, it has hosted more than 20interns, three of whom have found permanent employment with Beechwood. Currently, there areten interns, ranging in ages from 18-21, enrolled in the program.

“This program benefits all involved,” says Erin. “It promotes Beechwood’s ‘Welcome Home’ con-cept of treating our residents like family, it gives the interns real-work experience and a chance togain some independence and our residents love interacting with these kids.”

The current Project SEARCH class will finish in June, with a graduation ceremonyat Beechwood on June 21 beginning at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome.

LEAVE A LEGACY

While nobody likes to think about dying, the importance of having an estate plan in place cannotbe emphasized enough. Estate plans are not just for the wealthy, they are important for everyone. If you fail to plan your estate, state law will direct how your property is distributed, which means

your wishes may not be properly carried out for your family and your favorite charities.

Charitable bequests, designated through a will or living trust, can reduce or eliminate the amount of estate tax your beneficiarieswill owe. It’s actually very simple to name your favorite charityamong your beneficiaries; all you need to do is state the nonprofit’s fulllegal name and location and the type of gift (cash, property, lifeinsurance policy, retirement plan funds, etc.) in your will. (A tax IDnumber helps for further clarification, but isn’t legally required.)

Legacy gifts give you the peace of mind of knowing your assetswill be put to good use, and they ensure you will be remembered

long after you pass.

Legacy gifts left to the Beechwood/Blocher Foundation overthe past years have helped support our Homes and residents in somany ways including our benevolent fund (Living Care Fund),capital projects such as Wesley Rehabilitation Center and ourrecent Welcome Home Capital Project; and other long-term, beneficial endeavors such as Celebration of Life Gardens, ChapelFund, and Endowment Funds.

We celebrate our donors’ dedication to Beechwood Continuing Care’s mission:

Guided by Christian values, we are committed to nurturing each individual’s quality of living andaging by honoring personal values in a supportive environment.
