Cardiopulmonary Heart Bypass SystemAllied Motion designed a magnetically-coupled brushless pumpmotor to drive a disposable integrated oxygenator module, the"heart" of this innovative heart bypass system.

The optimized low-voltage winding of the motor, a version ofAllied Motion's Megaflux series, is driven by a custom-designed two-quadrant brushless drive module.

Dialysis SystemPatients with chronic kidney failure need hemodialysis (HD)therapy systems like the one shown here. Hemodialysis systemsin turn rely on peristaltic pumps to smoothly and accuratelycontrol the flow of the patient's blood and the dialysis solutionthrough the machine’s dialyzer (artificial kidney).

The key to smooth, long-life, and reliable operation of peristalticpumps as used in HD machines is the pump motor. Because oftheir efficiency, long service life, and reliability, Allied Motion’s BLseries brushless DC motors have been chosen for use in the HDsystem shown here, as well as for peristaltic pump applicationsin other types of medical equipment.

Left Ventricular Heart Assist Device (LVAD)Left ventricular heat assist devices (LVAD) are essentially bloodpumps developed to help assist the hearts of bridge-to-transplant patients and also for permanent support for end-stage heart failure patients.

In newer LVAD systems the pump is implanted in the patient,as the one shown here. This pump uses an axial flow designusing a brushless DC torque motor. The pump is powered viaa percutaneous connection toan external controller andbattery packs, enabling thepatient to be ambulatory.

Critical to the performance ofadvanced LVAD pumps arecompact, highly efficientbrushless motors, such asthose designed by AlliedMotion for LVAD applications.

PAP Respiratory VentilationPositive airway pressure (PAP) respiratory ventilation is used totreat sleep apnea. All PAP systems (APAP, IPAP/EPAP) control astream of compressed air to keep the patient’s airway open sobreathing is assisted, reducing or preventing apneas.

A key element of PAP machines is the air flow generator, basically a motor-blower that is controlled to generate precisepressure levels of air, typically in the range of 4 to 20 cm H2O.

Allied Motion’s small, precision brushless DC motors such asthe BL 21 EE shown here, are an ideal choice for PAP systemsowing to their compactness, long life, and quiet operation.

Programmable Syringe PumpSmall portable and battery-operated syringe pumps are usedextensively to administer infusions associated with chemotherapy, post operative and chronic pain control, antibiotics and othermedications given parenterally. Typical flow rates for these typesof syringe pump can range from 0.1 to 200 ml/h, so the motorsused must have excellent speed controllability.

Miniaturization of these units for use by ambulatory patientsrequires reliable small motors like Allied Motion’s CL29 corelessDC motors, which must be highly efficient in order to preservebattery life, which are highly efficient and help conservebattery power.

Angiographic CT Contrast InjectorContrast injectors are essential accessories for modern CTscanners. They inject X-ray contrast fluid intravenously, whichprovides dramatic improvement in the overall quality of CTimages of the circulatory system and many soft organs. Theenhanced images enable more accurate diagnoses to be made.

Allied Motion brushless servo motors and drives are used toprecisely drive the injector piston to achieve smooth, accuratefluid delivery.

Nuclear ImagingSome nuclear imaging systems use Anger cameras (photo-scintillation imagers) to image radiopharmaceuticals in apatient. In positron emission computer tomography (ECT) orsingle photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) thecameras are revolved around the patient. The cameras also aretranslated radially to keep the cameras close to thepatient’s body. A fourth linear motion axis translates theentire gantry assembly horizontally for full-body scans.

Allied Motion’s Quantum series of BLDC servo motorsare an ideal choice for this application because of theirhigh performance capabilities, compact size, andunquestionable reliabilityand service life.

Pharmacy AutomationIt is estimated that every year approximately 770,000 peopleare injured or die from adverse drug events in North America. Many of those cases arise from human error in medicationdispensing. Hence, the accuracy and higher efficiency affordedby automated prescription dispensing systems represents anenormous and real benefit to pharmacies, hospitals andpatients alike.

Because of their compact size, high performance andreliability, Allied Motion's servo motor and drive systems, andsmall coreless DC and BLDC motors are well-suited forpowering automated medication retrieval and dispensingsystems like the one shown here.

Pipetting System for Automated Blood AnalyzerBlood analysis subjects samples to a sequence of steps that ifdone manually are very time-consuming. The fully automatedpipetting subsystem shown here speeds theanalysis. In this subsystem a set of pipettes ispositioned to aliquot blood samples fromprimary test tubes and deposit them insecondary tubes. This subsystem must notonly be fast but also accurate and smooth inhandling the samples.

Allied Motion’s small CL29 coreless DCmotors with gearheads drive miniatureleadscrews to withdraw or deposit preciseamounts of fluid from or to the sampletubes, respectively. Quantum series servomotors power the X-Z mechanical translationsystem that precisely positions the pipettingsystem during operation.

Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) Finger ExerciserRehabilitation of joints and associated tendons can beexpedited using motorized robotic devices that continuouslyexercise the affected digits. Such devices must be easy to use, lightweight, battery powered for ambulatory patients, and enable precise, controlledsmooth movements.

The hand and finger exercisershown here employs an AlliedMotion CL40 coreless DC motorcoupled with an efficient S38spur reduction gearhead. Thegearmotor drives a smalltelescoping leadscrew linearactuator, which reciprocally drivesa glove-like assembly that holdsthe patient’s hand. The result issmooth and continuousextension and flexure of thepatient’s joints.

Pharmaceutical Vial Filling SystemSterile filling of vials with medications, reagents, cytotoxicagents and other medical liquids requires automated fillingsystems like that shown here. An X-axis linear stage carries aY-axis stage to quickly and precisely increment filler tubes overan array of vials. A peristaltic pump meters precise volumes ofthe fill liquid to the filler tube manifold.
