BEETHOVEN ON THE CAPE

We celebrate the Cape’s natural beauty – plus Beethoven’s own ode to nature! Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony, filled with babbling brooks, bird calls, and storms, will be the highlight. With the Harwich Conservation Trust, we’re creating a multimedia experience with an aerial view of our beautiful Cape landscapes accompanied by an evocative new soundtrack inspired by the amazing environment that surrounds us. Tan Dun’s “Secret of Wind and Birds” uses bird songs and Stella Sung’s “Oceana” features ship horns and the calls of humpback whales to create the experience of nature .

Mancini: his name means movie magic. Classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Pink Panther, and Charade came to life thanks to Henry Mancini’s stylish scores and songs. A giant in the pantheon of Hollywood composers, he received 18 Oscar nominations and won four . Mancini is a legend, and his GRAMMY-nominated daughter Monica Mancini joins us to share her stories of life with Hollywood royalty and to sing his wonderful songs, including “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Moon River .”

We welcome you to a sumptuous celebration of the Baroque giant Johann Sebastian Bach. The many highlights include the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5; our passionate principal cellist, Jacques Lee Wood, performing the “Prelude from Cello Suite No. 1”; and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” featuring the GRAMMY-nominated vocal sensation Skylark, an ensemble that creates a vocal tapestry with their intricate sound. We also go “forth” to hear modern interpretations of Bach, including Leopold Stokowski’s famous re-imagining of Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue” (heard in Disney’s Fantasia) and Anton Webern’s “Ricercar” from Bach’s The Musical Offering.

Bob Hope’s televised Christmas Shows for troops overseas were a tradition of America’s holiday season. We’re putting on our own version of the famous comedian’s variety show right here on Cape Cod, including crooner John Stevens singing the songs of Bing Crosby. We count our blessings – including our friends the Chatham Chorale — and feel grateful for the opportunity to celebrate together. Our annual tradition warms the heart and starts the holiday season. The splendor of Africa has inspired musicians, artists, and writers throughout time. In this “Passport” concert, we’ll take a musical journey through the different flavors and emotions with an authentic tribute to the extraordinary rhythms and melodies of Africa . Experience the stupendous performance of South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, who powerfully combines his Western classical training with his African heritage. Ghanaian American pianist William Chapman Nyaho stars in “Africa” by Camille Saint-Saëns, written in Egypt and based on North African folk music. You’ll also hear a beautiful piece by South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen called “African Kaddish.” Join us for this celebration of Africa’s pageantry and majesty.

Great things come in pairs. Twin sisters Christina and Michelle Naughton astound worldwide audiences who witness dual pianos played with incredible synchronicity . These Juilliard graduates perform French composer Francis Poulenc’s “Concerto for Two Pianos,” a delightful dialogue between the keyboards and the orchestra. We also perform “Concerto for Orchestra” by Hungarian Bela Bartok, featuring the famous “Game of Pairs” movement with solo pairs of woodwind and brass instruments entering together. For the very first time, the Cape Symphony presents Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 5, an extravagant opus filled with the hyper-emotionality of the last great Romantic composer. To find a brilliant soloist for a Mozart violin concerto, we’re going to open the door to the whole world, discovering truly creative artists via video auditions on our YouTube channel and selecting a winner to perform with us. It’s a modern way to find a soulmate for the orchestra. The chosen soloist will also join the orchestra for Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun’s Internet Symphony, a celebration of the global music community.

More than 2,400 students of all ages participate in the Conservatory’s music,

dance, and art programs. We strive to be a continual source of inspiration inside

the classroom and out in the community, with a commitment to making the arts

accessible to all. In addition, our arts-infused, academically inspired preschool

opens the door for little ones to develop a life-long interest in and love for the

arts . With campuses in Falmouth and Barnstable, we invite you to pursue your

COMMUNITY MINDED, COMMUNITY CONNECTEDThe Cape Symphony & Conservatory’s Educational Outreach programs strive to ensure all

students have the opportunity to participate in music and the arts . Our mission to Inspire

Joy through the Arts drives our outreach initiatives which aim to provide accessible, fun

and engaging opportunities of excellence for our diverse community.

OUTREACH PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

Music Memory: Students study 12 to 16 pieces of the world’s great music then

compete in a Name That Tune-style contest performed by the 40-piece live Cape

Symphony Music Memory orchestra .

Young People’s Concert: 2,800 students take a field trip to the Barnstable Performing

Arts Center for a school-day concert with the Cape Symphony.

Jazz in the Schools: Free jazz education concerts for students across the region.

For many children, this is their first chance to hear live jazz music and participate in a

program dedicated to jazz history and its cultural influence.

Tix4Music: Students and their chaperones can receive free tickets to select Cape

Symphony concerts. Tickets are underwritten by generous donors, enabling students

to experience the thrill of a live symphony orchestra performance .

Link Up: This Carnegie Hall-designed program provides music educators with special

tools to prepare their students to perform with the Cape Symphony right from their

seats in the audience. Students in grades 3-5 will sing and play recorder in a highly

interactive concert that strives to recruit the next generation of talented musicians!

• Lost tickets can be replaced prior to the concert by calling or visiting the Cape Symphony Box Office up until the Friday before the concert . The day of the concert, visit the Box Office at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, which opens two hours prior to the performance .
