SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Today, universities all over the world are called upon tosummon their will and mobilize their resources to
address the growing uncertainties engendered by globaleconomic recession, climate change, social injustice, and
ecological damage. The concept of “sustainabledevelopment,” as opposed to growth-oriented,
consumerist, and unsustainable development paradigms, has been a buzzword since 1987. Although sustainable
development is still a highly contested concept, universities are now exploring new epistemologies and
methodologies and discovering/uncovering newknowledge and pro-actively advancing them towards
alternative social imaginaries of a “good life” and a moresustainable future. According to a 2009 World Bank
study, majority of world-class universities had, to a greatextent, reached that stature due to their cutting-edge
researches on sustainable development. This lectureshall clarify the concept of sustainable development,
discuss the perspectives on Education for SustainableDevelopment, and provide some examples of innovative
academic programs (research, instruction and extension/public service) in higher education.
RAYMUNDO D. ROVILLOS is Professor of History
and Dean of the College of Social Sciences,
University of the Philippines Baguio. He is also
the Head of the CSC’s Climate Change Program.
GEOINFORMATICS
IN RESEARCH AND
SOME APPLICATIONS
FROM THE FIELD
by Alicia G. Follosco
The development and use of information scienceinfrastructure to address problems in the geosciences andrelated branches of engineering is primarily the domain ofgeoinformatics. This field, which makes use of geographicinformation systems, global positioning systems andremote sensing, encompasses a collection of techniquesand tools for the acquisition, processing, management, analysis and presentation of geospatial data. Today, thesetechniques and tools are employed in many applicationsand fields. This lecture will present the results of somerecent studies that show how the developed tools andinnovations in geoinformatics can be utilized to enrichspatial analysis in social and natural science research. Itwill also argue that while incorporating GIS and remotesensing in research need not be expensive, somenecessary human and resource capacities must be inplace.
ALICIA G. FOLLOSCO is University Researcher at the
Cordillera Studies Center. In March 2011, she received her
M.Sc. in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation
from the University of Twente, the Netherlands.
