When is it time to call it quits?

As many of you know, it is not easy to be a

leader when there is unrest among the

members. I just saw the results for this very

thing happening at the airplane meetings that I

attend. The President finally bowed out and moved to Arizona and a

new President was appointed. Is that what needs to happen at these

meetings? Do we need a new President? Why has no other person

stepped up to run for the office? I try to do my best but some in the

association are not satisfied with the job that I have been doing. I wish

someone else would take over and lead for awhile. I have no hard

feelings toward anybody. I thought I was doing okay. Apparently not.

So when is it time to call it quits? You tell me.

I will not be at the meeting this month. I hope everything goes okay. I

plan to be at the next meeting in November and you can discuss this

with me then. Paul will be in charge of the meeting this month.

Your President,

Mike Middick, CML

Office Locks

This month at the meeting we will be having a hands

on training session about office locks. Barry Meyer of

Acoma Locksmith Service will be talking to us about

office furniture locks, cabinet locks and other locks

you might find in an office. If you have tips, tricks, or

information to share about this type of locks, bring it to

the meeting and share it with us. Come and give

Barry your support.

What is it?

Can you guess what the object is in the

picture? Bring your guess to the meeting

and if you are right you will get a free scam

ticket. The answer to the object will be in

the next newsletter on page 12 along with

the winners who guessed at the meeting.

The Office of Vice President

Not sure if everyone knows this, but it took me some time to

figure it out. I was replacing a mortise lock that had a broken

spring on the bolt. Anyway I removed the lockset and installed

a new one. The bolt stayed stuck in when the handle was used.

Replaced it again and then made sure the handle shaft was not

rubbing on the wood. That fixed I tried it again, still same

problem. I ended up adjusting the face plate, seems the lockset

went in at a angle and would not release the bolt when using

the handle. This worked great, something to check.

Also ran into another Schlage lever passage set that the handle

fell off and locked the lady in the room. They remounted the

handle and gave us a call. Went out and found the castle nut

had backed out all the way, thank heavens it was on the outside

of the unit. Someone had installed it with the mounting screws

on the outside so I could remove and get the lockset apart far

enough to get the handle off and remount the castle nut and

adjust the lockset to the door and reinstall. In the past I had

found locks that the outside handle would not move, the lock

could be opened with the key but not the handle, same thing

for a fix. Most of the time by pushing in on the handle and

rotating it to the right I can move the castle nut enough to

release the handle. After that I would pull on the handle and

rotate it back, repeating this until I could get the handle off. On

the lock first mentioned in this article the castle nut had backed

out all the way, preventing me that choice of fix.

Enthusiasm is Only

Part of the Equation

In addition to having a positive

attitude and enthusiasm for what

you’re doing, you have to learn

the skills of your trade.

Enthusiasm, by itself, is like

running in the dark - you might

get there, but you also might get

killed along the way.

An Open Letter

In the recent newsletter, Mike seems to be searching for answers as to why meetings aren't better attended and why participation is low. I've thought about these things for some time. About a year ago I wrote [e-mail] to Steve regarding some fresh ideas that might make meetings more interesting but I never heard anything back. Frankly I'm not sure that I'm even a member, as I've filled out my E-mail form at least twice and asked about it at least twice yet it never appears in the newsletter. Moreover I've requested a membership card [new] and that too is all for not. My intent here is not to demean anyone, only to explain things as I [alone] see them. I speak for no one other than myself. Often the newsletter attempts to enumerate the steps and stages involved in the demise of an organization but they are really only the symptoms and not the disease! Stagnation and lack of creativity are the true enemies of a vibrant organization. Same old -same old if you get my meaning! I often wonder how Henry Ford or Edison accomplished anything without a printed mission statement staring back at them each day! If this organization MUST have one, it should only say: ALL THINGS FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THE ORGANIZATION---PERIOD This opens a lot of doors Does it really have to be training and presentations every meeting? Are we not more than locksmiths? Can't we do fun things together to create bonds and fellowship? [at least every third or fourth meeting] Can we not acknowledge birthdays,- anniversary's accomplishments and the like in the newsletter at the very minimum? Perhaps a birthday cake at the meeting to celebrate a members birthday? Ever consider a pot luck every 3rd meeting and bring family in? How about a Sky Sox game? Tickets are cheap and they will put CSCLA on the big board. How about a bowling nite on some meeting nite? There are a thousand ideas but the point is make it fun--make it interesting for members and their families. It doesn't have to be locksmithing 24/7-365! I haven't even touched on the many opportunities for community involvement that present chances for name recognition and

Page 11: CSCLA PRESS · Acoma Locksmith Service will be talking to us about office furniture locks, cabinet locks and other locks you might find in an office. If you have tips, tricks, or

CSCLA 11

good will. Yes some of it costs money. SO WHAT? Doesn't the treasury exist for the benefit of its members? At this point I'm sure some might fairly ask: If you can do it so much better,- Why don't you run for office. The answer is two fold. First , it's unlikely that I will renew my membership as I go to the American Legion on Friday nites. Second,- I'm a grunt [behind the stage type] I've worked several political campaigns but always as a foot solder or slightly higher-------never wanted to be the Big Cheese. Lots of folks are like me and no organization can run without them. Leadership can be rotated by Quarter or whatever Let everyone get their feet wet if they are willing ! Folks-even the President of the United States can only serve two terms [thank God in the case of the current resident of the White House] Understand too,----Although there may be people willing to step up, ---- they may well be intimidated by former officers glancing over their shoulder. This is only going out to a few of you, because you are the only ones who are on my E-mail list. NO other reason, so feel free to pass it along. Please know that it was not my intent to hurt feelings,- only to say the truth as I see it and God knows I'm often wrong. At any rate I wish each of you the best and I hope the CSCLA will flourish.
