PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This week, the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association(CSLEA) Directors met for our 2018 first quarter board meeting. We had a very informative day at CSLEA headquarters and at theState Capitol. You can read more about the updates we receivedand some of the legislators we met with here.

It was extremely kind of our lawmakers tomeet with our board and it demonstratesour strong working relationship withlegislators at the Capitol. I know ourdirectors appreciated the time andconsideration. It was a chance for us tostep away from the boardroom and visitlegislators in their working environment.

And speaking of working environments, I would like to take a moment to reflect on thesenseless loss of life at the Veterans Home in Yountville last week. This was a very tragicsituation and I pray for the families who are hurting with grief. No one, not civilians, notofficers, should show up for work to perform their duties, only to never return homeagain. As you may be aware, CSLEA responded to media requests regarding ourmembers who are unarmed security officers at Yountville. You can find that press releasehere and see some of the press coverage here. This is absoultely the right time to re-address the issue of unarmed security and peace officers working for the State ofCalifornia. We must keep our members and our citizens as safe as possible. We need totalk about increasing our peace officer staffing levels and training, and providing firearms.

Also, this weekend, I know there are someof our members who are running in theBaker to Vegas event. This takesdedication and training and we wish all ofyou a safe, injury-free run. It is the St.Patrick's Day weekend, so I would like remind everyone to celebrately safely andresponsibly.

CSLEA Directors at State Capitol to Meet with Legislators

Visit follows directors' 2018 first quater board meeting

SACRAMENTO - On March 13, 2018, California Statewide Law Enforcement Association(CSLEA) officers and directors met at CSLEA headquarters for their first quarter boardmeeting. After receiving updates from CSLEA legal, legislative, political, membership, andthe communications departments, the CSLEA directors visited the State Capitol andseveral legislative leaders including Senate Pro Tem Elect Toni G. Atkins, Senator ConnieM. Leyva, Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon, and Assemblywoman LorenaGonzalez Fletcher.

The CSLEA Consumer Protection & Public Safety (CPPS) Foundation ScholarshipApplication Review Committee is proud to announce it is now accepting applications forscholarships which are available to CSLEA members, their spouses, and children.

Last fall, the CSLEA foundation awarded eight $1,000 scholarships to assist CSLEAmembers with the cost of higher education, and this year, the plan is to do the same. Read More

SACRAMENTO - What California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA)Member Sal Martinez experienced after he was the victim in an off-duty, possible hit-and-run vehicle accident was more than anyone could have imagined. Even though he was thevictim in this accident, and acted as most peace officers would have, Sutter CountyDistrict Attorney Amanda Hopper chose to prosecute Martinez for assault with a deadlyweapon and brandishing. He was also fired from his job as a California AlcoholicBeverage Control (ABC) agent. In the period of 18 months, the CSLEA Legal DefenseFund (LDF) and team of attorneys fought for his innocence and his career. Read More

CSLEA's Membership Encouragement Program continues to be a hit.

Here's how it works:If your Unit 7 colleagues are not full members of CSLEA and sign up using your name asa "sponsor" - CSLEA will thank you with $50.00. Ask around. CSLEA members receive enormous benefits over fair-share members. The differencebetween fair-share and full-dues is minimal, in most cases just $5 to $10 a month.

Full-dues paying members receive a $15,000 basic life insurance policy and a top-notch,proven Legal Defense Fund, that, as a consumer protection or public safety employee, noone should be without.

Full-dues paying members also receive access to scholarships, the CSLEA ExclusiveMember Discounts Program and the Fraternal Order of Police benefits program.
