Background – Recycling and the Environment CSN has been recycling for over 10 years. Our effort started with just a few wheeled and non-wheeled totes from Silver State Disposal and grew to over 150 totes, with Republic Services. With a grant from the 2007-2008 Student Government, led by President Taylor Gray, an ad-hoc committee was formed to determine ways to expand recycling. The 11 person Committee, chaired by Jim Nelson, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, was developed for the following purpose, created the mission statement and website, “Recycling and the Environment” for CSN.

Purpose:

Advocate for and encourage an effective and responsible recycling program

Research existing college and university recycling programs for applicable program components

Investigate resource (financial and personnel) needs for implementing a recycling program at CSN

Identify recyclable materials on CSN campuses and learning centers

Locate local vendors offering recycling and collection services

Create strategies to promote acceptance and participation by all members of the college community

Research grant money sources for start up support

Report findings and make recommendations to the President

Mission:

Reduce waste, promote the recycling of materials, and maintain and promote clean and environmentally conscious campuses.

In May of 2009, Auburn Fiber was brought on board, to help accomplish our goal of recycling cardboard, paper, plastic, aluminum, and providing on-site shredding.

Currently, there are 29 recycling stations, 80+ recycling totes, two compactors and two recycling dumpsters on CSN’s three main campuses. The on-site shredding program is under way and there has been at least one “on-site” shred at each CSN campus. There have been 68 employees trained on the compactors from the areas of Facilities, Culinary, OTS, Libraries, Bookstores, and Food Service vendors.
