I am proud to present to you the CSO’s 2013/14 Season. As you can see, we have an exciting season planned for you. Some of the highlights of the Masterworks Series include Mozart’s Requiem with our wonderful CSO Chorus; Holst’s The Planets with a video presentation of space exploration; one of my favorite Beethoven symphonies, Symphony No. 7, paired with Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts’ Inspiring Beethoven, which is an homage to Beethoven’s 7th; and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring to be performed for the first time in Chattanooga Symphony’s history. You do not want to miss a single beat of the season!

As in the previous season, we have invited some dynamic young artists to join the CSO. Featured next season are Jennifer Frautschi with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Geoffrey Duce with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 and Wesley Baldwin with Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. I have also invited one of my favorite conductors and a mentor to guest conduct the CSO during this exciting season. Peter Bay will conduct the Prokofiev Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, which is a collaboration with Chattanooga’s own String Theory. This performance will truly be inspiring!

In our Pops Series, you’ll enjoy the annual traditions of Home for the Holidays and Big Band Fever, along with tributes to Rodgers and Hammerstein plus the Gershwins. Our Chamber Series is still going strong, and we’re excited to perform for a second year at the Volkswagen of Chattanooga plant. With so much great programming, subscribing is the best way to ensure you see all of your favorites.

COPLAND Fanfare for the Common ManCOPLAND Appalachian SpringHOLST The Planets

The 2013/14 Masterworks Series begins with popular 20th Century works. Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man was written as a stirring musical tribute to those engaged in World War II, creating a fanfare that was traditional, direct and powerful. Copland’s Pulitzer Prize-winning orchestral suite, Appalachian Spring, takes us on a journey of 19th century American pioneers in Spring, inspired by the Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts. We close with an exploration of The Planets, Holst’s musical focus on the astrological aspects long associated with the planets and their mythological namesakes. Video imagery will accompany the works.

This concert, which coincides with the sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War, features works by American composers. Included are several of Samuel Barber’s works, including his pensive Adagio for Strings. Copland’s Lincoln Portrait is narrated with the reading of excerpts of Abraham Lincoln’s great documents, including the Gettysburg Address.

MOZART Symphony No. 38, “Prague”MOZART Requiem

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, referred to as the “Prague” Symphony, reflects his symphonic style at its most sophisticated. This work was originally performed in Prague with gratitude for the Bohemian people that held him in high esteem. The Requiem was left unfinished at Mozart’s death, inciting several years of controversy, including a claim by his widow that he was writing it for his own funeral.

Beethoven’s lively 7th Symphony is said to be one of the most perfect symphonies of all time, while Beethoven himself considered it one of his best works. Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Kevin Puts first offers a creative reimagining of Beethoven’s composition of the first movement of his seventh symphony in Inspiring Beethoven. Rounding out the program is Mendelssohn’s popular and largest orchestral work, the violin concerto, performed by Jennifer Frautschi.

BRAHMS Symphony No. 3BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 1

This all Brahms concert features the composer’s beautiful Symphony No. 3, said to have influences of Beethoven, Schumann and Wagner. His first piano concerto, performed by Geoffrey Duce, came about after failed attempts at creating his first symphony. Those initial sketches instead became a musical tribute to his mentor, Robert Schumann.

Guest artists from String Theory join the CSO on Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, an elegant work that features piano, cello and violin. Prokofiev composed his fifth symphony in a safe haven run by the Soviet Union during World War II, and intended it as “a hymn to free and happy man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.”

SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No. 1STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring

Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, performed by Wesley Baldwin, was conceived and composed prior to the deterioration of his health and is, for the most part, a dark and introspective work. Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring was an avant-garde ballet and orchestral work when written in 1913 and caused riots among audience members. Stravinsky himself has described it as “a musical-choreographic work, [representing] pagan Russia...unified by a single idea: the mystery and great surge of the creative power of Spring.”
