Corporate Social Responsibility …any  given responsibility  of  action of  business could  have economic, legal, ethical, or  discretionary  motives  embodied   in  it.  (Archie  B.  Carroll  1979,  p.  500),  that’s  how

Carroll defined Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

It is difficult to provide a broad definition of  what this means in practice, but what is

clear  is  that  the  adoption  of   re  Corporate  Social  Responsibility  (CSR)  quires

companies to “put less weight on the sovereignty of  shareholders and much more on

the  responsibility  of   corporate managers  to  serve  the  needs  of   society”  (Owen,

2001:8).

The  lack  of   a  precise  definition  of  what  Corporate  Social  Responsibility  (CSR)  is,

makes  it  very  varied, whilst  at  the  same  time  difficult  to  implement.  Companies

experience pressure when they have to balance the different demands and needs for

shareholders and  from  the public or community and as a  result  it  turns out  to be

very difficult to shortlist or filter their concerns in the definition and implementation

of  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

According to Carroll (1999), the concept of  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can

be traced back to the 1950s in the US. To date, a clear definition of  Corporate Social Responsibility  (CSR)  is  still  indefinable,  although  it  has  become  clearer  that  the

Corporate  Social  Responsibility  (CSR)  have  very  high  influence  on many  business and societal dimensions.

An  interesting  development  during  the  1980s  is  that  of   trying  to  establish

l ti hi b t th d ti f C t S i l R ibilit (CSR)

In this paper I will introduces the corporate social responsibility of  the company I’m

working in, Maersk Oil Qatar.  Maersk Oil was established in 1962 when Maersk was

awarded

concession

for

oil

and

gas

exploration

and

production

in

the

Danish

sector

of  the North Sea.

Today, Maersk Oil  is  engaged  in  exploration  for  and  production  of   oil  and  gas  in

many parts of  the world. Total oil production  is more than 600,000 barrels per day

(95,000 m³/d) and gas production is up to some 1 billion cubic feet (28,000,000 m3)

per day. Most of   this production  is  from  the North Sea,  from both  the Danish and

British  sectors,  but  there  is  also  production  in  offshore  Qatar,  in  Algeria  and  in

Kazakhstan.

The  majority  of   the  community  perceives  Oil  companies  as  companies  which

produce and process oil  to gain  the  financial value, and  that not always  the  case.

Here in Qatar Maersk oil came up with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) not as

a charity but as a license to operate and something to be proud of.

Initiation of

 Corporate

 Social

 Responsibility

 in

 Maersk

 Oil

Qatar Starting with Qatar National Vision 2030,  to Qatar National Development Strategy

2011‐2016,  to  interviews with more  than 15 selected Maersk Oil Qatar employees

and  finally  Corporate  Social  Responsibility  (CSR)  Survey  it  was  determined  that

there is a clear articulated demand for the private sector to support nation building.

After  identifying  the  need  for  Corporate  Social  Responsibility  (CSR), Maersk  Oil

compared itself to other oil companies to identify its position in terms of Corporate

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategic framework developed lots of

activities; these activities were prioritized and shortlisted to CSR activities covering the three pillars and the foundation of  the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

framework.

One of  the activities was a diabetes program called as ACTION ON DIABETES. To

write this paper I had to prepare a list of  questions, see Appendix A, to interview the

owners on this program and they were really cooperative although their busy

schedules.

ACTION ON DIABETES

Worldwide the NGO’s put pressure on firms to be more socially responsible and here

in  Qatar  the our wise government motivates and promotes  the  idea of   Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), however corporations like Maersk find it very difficult to

come up with a unique and valuable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities

because  Qatar  is  a  very  rich  country,  and  the  government  is  very  generous  in

covering all  the needs of   its  locals. Qatar needs a  Corporate  Social  Responsibility (CSR) that adds a value to the community rather that a charity.

After a lot of  brainstorming, meetings, surveys, the diabetes problem came into the

picture. Maersk Oil conducted a research and investigated on the diabetes and they

came  up  with  results  showing  that  a  high  percentage  of   population  in  Qatar  is

suffering  from  diabetes.  Recent  data  from  the  International  Diabetes  Federation,

suggests that at least one in 1 in 5 people in Qatar has diabetes, and the total is likely

to

be

higher

It

is

problem

that

almost

each

house

in

Qatar

has

because

of

the

life

diabetes‐free environment  in Qatar by drawing strategic plans to overcome

this  problem.  Italy  established  a  diabetes  committee  that  revealed  a  huge

success in reducing the severity of  this problem.

Awareness program From its name, it will help people in Qatar to understand how serious this is

and  as  well  as  offering  them  ways  to  avoid  it  by  encouraging  people  to

exercise, eat healthy, go  for periodic  check and all  the actions  that help  in

building  awareness  of   diabetes  and  how  to  prevent  it.  Three  awareness

events have been done till date.

o  Special Action on Diabetes presentation and  cookery demonstration that  held  on  Monday  14th  November   –  which,  fittingly,  is World

Diabetes day.

o  All Maersk Oil employees were invited to walk on the Corniche. o  Community event at Katara for our first  ACTION ON DIABETES.  See

Appendix B. And the owners had a press conference on the 24

th of  November 2011 at the

Sheraton hotel

 about

 this

 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Facility for Diabetes (under discussion) This is a future plan for establishing a diabetes hospital.

In my opinion, Maersk Oil has established a unique activity  as a  Corporate  Social Responsibility (CSR). Maersk Oil invested 5 million dollars in something valuable that

gives its name a license to operate and We all know how big the diabetes problem in

Qatar hence with this CSRMaersk Oil will have a direct effect on the community and
